i actually won this bike! late one evening in the cereal aisle of the local superfresh grocery store in pottstown, PA, i decided i wanted a box of nutritious strawberry honeycomb cereal. the only other kid in the aisle has a box in his hand, but his mom says "no, put that back". being the last box on the shelf, i distinctly recall feeling very pleased with myself as i snuck it into my mom's cart. never thinking that it would amount to anything other than pink milk in my cereal bowl the next morning, i opened the box and looked for the license plate. i was disappointed at first, hoping for the familiar blue/yellow of the PA license plate like on my mom's car, as the one i pulled from the box was maroon. after fumbling with the thick plastic overlay (to keep the metallic goodness from the pencil shaving nutrition of the cereal, i suppose), i read the word "winner" on the plate. yelling "i won the bike, i won the bike" had little to no impact on my mom and sister, who had endured me shouting "i just won $1,000" from a game piece from a Keebler cookie package just the night before. healthy food was not allowed in our house, apparently. long story short (or is it too late for that?), i mailed in the license plate as directed, and waited anxiously for th ebike to be delivered. when it arrived, the "golden hawk" black bike was about 300 pounds, right around the time when most of the other kids were talking their parents into buying the new "mongoose" or "diamondback" trick bikes that were just coming out. never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, i rode that thing til the welding on the support bar on the handlebars broke. but the joy of being "that kid" and telling my story the first day of school next year was unsurpassed. ah, i will regale my grandchildren with this tale...
