Double, "Blue" / 1985 Review by: Anja
Sparse, steady rhythms set the stage for this Swiss group's sound. Layered onto the drums is spare, almost minimalist instrumentation-a bass run here, horn or keyboard there-the bits and pieces combining into a luscious, inviting whole. The gruff, lazy vocals seem almost an afterthought, yet they add a trance-like demeanor to the proceedings. Double sounds like a cabaret combo that's been locked in a studio with a mild hallucinogen for a few days-thoroughly conventional at the core yet with a dippy nonchelance that's charming and unquestionably cool.
