Description
Kinda like dark colored Frosted Flakes, but they were glazed with sugar, instead of covered in powdered sugar. They were more wheat flavored, and quite yummy. (Early 80's)

I totally forgot about this cereal until now...I don't think I ever ate it but remember the commercials for it....memories!

Buc-wheats were my favorite cereal as a kid. Nobody that I know remembers the cereal. I wish that I could find the cereal now. I don't even think that they make it anymore.

My taste buds could be lying, but Kelloggs' new Frosted Flakes Gold cereal tastes A LOT like I remember Buc-Wheats tasting.

Try Kellog's SMART START Healty Heart Maple and Brown sugar. I bought some recently and even the smell reminded me of Buc Wheats. Brought back my childhood in a big way :).

NEW cereal!!! Kelloggs Frosted Flakes GOLD. Tastes the closest to what I remember as Buc Wheats. Not Wheat, but still good!

This was my FAVORITE cereal! I loved eating this and really wished they'd bring it back. Thanks for the tips on the other cereal.

DO YOUR PART TO HELP BRING THEM BACK!!! Email General Mills (Corporate.Response@genmills.com) and tell them why you demand the return of BUC-WHEATS!!!

I hadn't thought about Buc-Wheats in a long time, and then I had a bowl of Full Circle's Multi Grain Flakes. I think the flakes are a little hardier, but the maple flavor is right on. I purchased Full Circle from my local food co-op, and may also be found at stores like Whole Foods. Also, the cereal does not have a mail-in offer on the back of the box for a Farmer's Almanac (remember that?)

I was razzed by a hardcore BucWheater on another blog for this suggestion, but try Arrowhead Mills Maple Buckwheat Flakes. I think they are the closest thing out there.
discomurf - July 08, 2008 - Report this comment
Arrowhead Mills Maple Buckwheat Flakes were a pretty big letdown for me. The only thing in common was a very slight hint of the buckwheat flavor. The flakes were all off, and you could hardly taste the maple. I think the closest you can get at the moment is 'Oatmeal Crisp Maple Brown Sugar'..tastes pretty artificial though. I'm going to look into these Full Circle flakes, thanks ScotinMKE. I think the closest you can get at the moment is 'Oatmeal Crisp Maple Brown Sugar'..tastes pretty artifical though. I just sprinkle artificial maple flavoring, instead of sugar, on Wheaties when I have that craving for Buc-Wheats.

I loved Buc-Wheats...the only cereal I ever saw that had biotin and pantothenic acid in its nutritional information list.

New Maple and Brown Sugar Life cereal tastes an awful lot like Buc-Wheats

I miss BucWheats too!! Quaker has a Golden Maple Squares cereal that is close to BucWheats, but not quite.
NapalmZygote - September 08, 2008 - Report this comment
BucWheats was the best friggin cereal of all time. Plus nutritionally it was pretty intense... I remember most cereals would have the typical 20 or 25% of RDA for most the vitamins / minerals, but BucWheats would clock in with some 40 and 45% RDAs. Even as a eight-year-old I was impressed and knew I was eating greatness. I really believe that spraying Wheaties on a cookie sheet with a diluted maple syrup concoction, and baking it for a short time in the oven, one could recreate the magic. In my heart I know it'd just be a huge letdown, but can I just have this one dream? Remember the first couple years your Mom would take you shopping and you'd inspect the entire cereal aisle hoping "maybe they got some more in" but no, the cereal had disappeared forever. God can be a harsh God, I guess.

I'm happy to see I'm not the only one who remembers and very much misses BucWheats. They were deelish. I will try a couple of the cereals mentioned here to see if they match up. FiberOne's Honey Clusters have a hint of the same flavor but not enough.

WOW!! I'm so glad to see that I'm not the only one who not only remembers Buc-Wheats, but that it was the greatest tasting cereal of all time!! I did e-mail General Mills about 10 years ago asking them if there was anywhere in the US that they were still distributing it to, & they said no, & that the line was totally discontinued, & they had no plans of returning it. I agree with Discomurf. We all need to continue to e-mail General Mills & demand they return it in its ORIGINAL formula. Don't "New & Improve" it, because manufacturers usually mess it up when they do that! Is anybody with me on this?

I loved loved loved Buc-Wheats and missed them something fierce, but I recently found the closest substitute thus far: Fiber One Honey Clusters. Yum!

I've been looking for Buc-Wheats for years. I went to WalMart and a local grocer to see if they could still get this product, they had NO idea what I was talking about. That was the best cereal hands down! I always wondered why, now as an adult, I eat Total cereal or the generic equivalent. I guess I didn't stray far off the ranch now did I? LOL BRING BACK BUC-WHEATS!

Buc Wheats was my fave cereal of all time!! I bought my kids Frosted Flakes Gold tonight, and the consistency reminded me of Buc Wheats, as did the flavor a little, which prompted my web serach. I'll have to try some of the suggestions above.

Buc Wheats were great. Most people have no idea what I'm talking about. And a fun name to say.

Buc Wheats rocked. I don't understand why companies have to discontinue something that's good and good for you, while continuing to saturate the market with garbage. Grr. Bring back my Buc Wheats!

Count me as another Buc-Wheats fan that really misses that rich, crispy sweetness. I agree with someone else who recommended SMART START Healthy Heart Maple and Brown Sugar. My daughter got it and I tried it and was transported back to Buc-Wheat days. Not an exact match, but not bad.

I just sat down at my PC while eating a bowl of new Kelloggs Frosted Flakes GOLD. It reminded me so much of Buc-Wheats that I had to google and found this forum. If you loved Buc-Wheats, you gotta try Kelloggs Frosted Flakes GOLD. Tastes like old times. MMMMMMMM!

I wonder if we could petition General Mills to bring Buc-Wheats back?!
Matt - April 01, 2009 - Report this comment
I grew up eating Buc Wheats. I get a craving for them usually every 12 months or so it seems. I get my Buc Wheat fix by adding real maple syrup (it has to be REAL syrup - nothing less will do, trust me!) to a bowl of Wheaties. The only thing is that the flakes are thinner than BucWheats, but the flavor is very close!
Susan - April 10, 2009 - Report this comment
Personally I just eat Wheaties with maple syrup on them...tastes just like BucWheats!
Norah - April 17, 2009 - Report this comment
I know I can't post the link here, but if you go to generalmills on the web, and click on "contact us", you can email consumer services. I agree, the only way to possibly bring it back is for each person to let them know how beloved and MISSED that cereal is, and that we'd BUY it again in a heartbeat! I think the Frosted Flakes Gold SMELL like Buc Wheats out of the box, and SORT OF taste like them if they're not in milk, but then putting the milk on them, they become far too sugary and fake-tasting... Oh, man. Now I'm jonesin' for a box o' Bucs!

My husband and I reminisce about BucWheats. I can almost taste them, even now! I did try a General Mills "Total" Maple Brown sugar (I think was the name)cereal that I thought was remarkably close in flavor and texture, and I was very excited about it, but I haven't seen that on the shelves now for about 6 months.

Buc Wheats...ahhh. I'm sure they taste better now through the rose-colored cereal bowl of memory. Even so Buc Wheats is in my top three all time favorite cereals. Nowadays I can't eat as much cereal at a sitting as I used to nor can the roof of my mouth endure as much sugar cereal abuse.

I am amazed to find so many people who also miss Buc Wheats. My mom bought it orignally in the 70's and we really liked it and then they took it away and I remember as a young adult being in a very, very small town "mom and pop" grocery store when I found it again. It was a dream come true. After that it appeared on my regular grocery store shelf for awhile and then they took it away again. I still search the cereal aisle looking for Buc Wheats hoping that it will suddenly be there again. I have told my daughter of this delicous goodness but it is not the same as being able to share it with her. I decided to look on the internet to see if it was available anywhere on the globe. Unfortunately no, but I did find others who also miss the maple favored, thick wheat flakes as much as I and you all have given me hope that we can some how unit to bring Buc Wheats back. I am sure there are more of us out there.

Buc Wheats was the best cereal ever! I'd sign a million petitions to GM if it would help them bring it back!

I am also a Buc Wheats fan and have an absolute craving for it right now. The wheat-based flakes seemed to be thicker than any other cereal's and the maple flavor was divine. I also wish they'd bring it back - in these days of hyper-healthy ways, I think it'd be a splash in the market...again. Don't be quiet, let GM know we want our favorite cereal back - I'd choose Buc Wheats even over Cap'n Crunch and Raisin Bran!

Buc Wheats ROCKED! I LOVED the maple flavor. No other cereal (back when I was a kid) had maple flavoring. Wheaties may have been healthy but they tasted like eating dried leaves; no flavor. I sure miss 'em!

For years I have wondered about Buc Wheats!! I can still smell and taste that yummy maple flavor. I find it hard to believe there hasnt been some sort of reto trial of this cereal. I talk about Buc wheats with my kids all the time. I tell em they were awesome but they just look at me like "yeah mom and you walk a 100 miles to school in the snow with no shoes on to right"? I'd give anything for just one more bowl! where do I sign up to petition General Mills? Count me in!

Hey - I'm going back in my time machine to 1983 whoever wants some Bucwheats just leave a note and I'll pick up some extra - might have to make a few trips based on the number of people on this blog though.

One of my favority cereals growing up of ALL TIME. I always wondered why GM discontinued them because they were so tasty.. and I always loved the fact that they stayed crunchy in milk unlike most flaky cereals that get soggy right away. Great great cereal :(

Buc-Wheats are O-TAY!!! Miss the hell out of these. I look up and down at the cereal aisle at the true crap they have these days, and wonder where these went. I think it's likely because it's not multi-colored sugar cubes like most cereals today.
