Had one of these, too. In purple. Made it in Home Ec in Junior High. It was easy to do because I could make it huge and not worry about the sizing. XD

At the very end of the 70s and the earliest 80s, girls who wanted to look "new wave" would wear an oversized red sweatshirt, thigh-length, over opaque tights and pointy pumps from the 1950s. Norma Kamali also made flouncy minidresses in the early 80s out of grey sweatshirt fabric. Those were really popular. To see an exactly early 80s-style sweatshirt dress, check out the 2005 British parody of early 80s suspense shows, "Garth Marenghi's Dark Place," the episode called "Hell Hath Fury." The character Liz Asher wears one with a wide 80s belt and looks period-perfect.
