Lace-up ankle boots really popular in the mid-80s after Madonna wore them a lot in her fingerless-gloves-and-stretch-lace phase. They were usually worn in black and usually had a low cone heel or what's now called a "kitten heel," meaning a small, low, narrow version of an early 1960s-style stiletto. I had a roommate in the mid-80s whose favorite shoes were a pair of lace-up ankle boots with a low cone heel, the heel extremely underslung in 80s style. They were a beige/putty-color leather and she wore them with just about everything, but they looked best with an ankle-length, beige tube skirt she had.

Actually I think these are once again in style since every1 is dressing more retro now. I was a kid in the 80's so I never would have gotton away with wearing these and now as an adult... I'm not really into the whole retro look :)
