OH my God! I just found my old banana clip. It would be totally gnarly if they came back in style with much of the other 80's styles. I think I will wear it out of the house and see what my 15 year old daughter has to say.

I wore a banana clip to an 80's theme party last month and I liked it so much I've started wearing it in my regular life. I love it and I'm not ashamed - c'mon people bring back the banana clip!!

I had them in EVERY color even with fake diamonds in the sides. I would even change up the look and sometimes wear the pony to the side OOOOH. I think I still have blue one left, no I don't wear it. Not to sure why I still keep it though???

These were soooo cool. I had a light blue one.

I also had on in every colour to match everything I wore. I also had big permed layered hair that fit nicely into it. I don't think I would want that again, but it made for a fast hairdo.

I used to wear banana clips all the time. Now getting my 80's costume together for Halloween I fine one of my original banana clips that I think I might just wear for the memories more than the fun!

Ahhh? What is wrong with the banana clip? I think that was one of the best inventions of the 80's. As long as you wore them vertically and not horizontally, you were "Way Rad"! I still wear them because they make my hair look full and unlike a ponytail put up with a rubber band, you can take your hair out of this clip and it doesn't make your hair look like it has been tied up all day...A couple of "Bay Watch Girls" hair flips and you're good to go out on the town. Another thing, it made us all look like Julia Roberts in Steel Magnolias! Why do you think it's a classic! All bow to the banana clip!
Ashley Atrocity - November 07, 2007 - Report this comment
I still rock a banana clip! I think that it makes a really wicked looking faux-hawk, [[FYI-that's a hair style that looks like a mohawk but doesn't require the shaving of the head]].

I had some of these when I was little bitty (the Eighties were still hanging on in the early Nineties I guess. It seems so weird to talk about the Nineties...they weren't that long ago! I'm too young to feel old like this! Stop! Stop!). But I never used them. I wonder if I still have them? I gonna go look...

Who decides what is going to be in fashion? Over-paid designers? It looks as if most of the people who posted on this site agreed the banana clips were awesome and they are right! I too loved the banana clips. They have a larger clip in stores today mimicking the style of the old banana clip but it just doesn’t work as well. I found our banana clips for sale on the posted website for a $1.59 in all colors. I loved mine so much I plan on ordering me some and wearing them. (They even take Paypal-which I love!) Apparently everybody else loves them too, so really who could talk about them… and if they do, who cares? Enjoy your day ladies! Google banana clip

I love em now. Don't remember them in the 80's but found out about them about 5 years ago and they are the best. What's the difference in this and a pony tail? Can't find the smaller ones though which I like better. Hope I can as mine are getting worn out.

Are all of you nuts; lost your minds? Was your banana clip in too tight causing minor, or in this case, major head trauma? What's next; acid washed jeans? Please, some things are best laid to rest, like the banana clip and feathered bangs.

I found a couple in my drawer from decades ago. I liked making them talk like a mouth. I have long curly hair and these are great for working out in or on warm days. (I'm old, and a regular ponytail just looks wrong on me.) I bought something similar at walmart and they broke, but they were shorter and fatter. Asked in a beauty supply shop and they never had seen them. So i found some on ebay but not sure if they're the quality ones or the brittle ones that break too easily.
EB-A fan - July 17, 2008 - Report this comment
I didn't really know when they were in fashion (the ignorance of youth) but I have about 4 in different colours which i alternate and wear a lot (mainly to school). I tend to wear them looser (not verticle) and I quite like how they gradually fall down. They're also useful to quickly comb your fringe!

OK, I'm not going to lie... I bought a 3 pack of these yesterday! I am 21 and had never seen a banana clip before until a girl in one of my college classes this semester wore one. It looked so cool on her! It made her hair stick out awesomely. It looks less cool on me because I have long, fine hair. I had no idea that these things had a name and a history, haha. I just found out now and I'm cracking up!

I've gotta be honest, I'm only 20 and I love wearing them, too! Whoever said they look dumb and ugly with long straight hair is wrong. my hair is way too thick for a normal ponytail, but the banana clip lets me pull my hair back AND stay at an attractive length. I wish I could find a more heavy-duty one! The only ones I can find are almost too small to hold all my hair.
Raine - January 15, 2009 - Report this comment
You can still find them at most stores - a lot of time Big Lots has them cheap, and Wal-Mart usually has them too. I did had really long, thick hair, and these were great if I wanted to wear it "down", but out of my face.

I had a couple with a fabric (ribbon) on the sides. Loved them. My hair is long again and looked high and low for them; nothing in the stores. Found a couple at the street fair in Palm Desert last year. Since then found a variety of colors online and ordered them. Have had a couple of friends ask where I get them. Setting a new trend at the Country Club!
Aline - March 07, 2009 - Report this comment
The cheesy banana clips available almost everywhere are nowhere nearly as functional as the basic clips that had loops of ribbon wired to them back in the 80's. Those are the REAL banana clips that become invisible when used for making awesome up-dos. Yes I wear the only one I have (sans ribbon) practically daily. But this pliable plastic style with the secure interlocking hook closer must be extinct. None of the sites mentioned I have seen has anything like them. I live in fear of losing this one and have been desperately searching for replacement stock. But alas, Goodys wide hard plastic one breaks too easily and the wimpy hook will not stay closed. And that long Lt. La Forge VISOR glasses variety that pops open at either end is useless except for fauxhawks. Does ANYONE know where to find the REAL banana clips??

Hey--I too LOVE the banana clip and yes ladies, they ARE still available! I got a 2-pak from Sally's Beauty Supply, I also saw them at Target but they were the shorter one and I need the long ones. You can also find them online. I've never been one to give a hoot as to what is "in & out". I wear what I want--when I want to wear it. I like them to pull my hair back when I'm working out or cleaning. I only stopped wearing them because I cut my hair real short and had it that way for a few years. And by the way--some posted that they couldn't be used on black hair---not true! I am black and use it on mine. I think we have to all stop generalizing. Just as all caucasians don't have the same hair type, neither to black people but a lot of black people seem to think we all do! Get to know your OWN hair and don't think that because something doesn't work for you that it won't work for others and vice versa! That actually is true for everyone because some others have posted they think the banana clips suck because they didn't work on their hair. When will we learn--not everything is for everybody but stop trying to discourage others just because something doesn't work for you! OK--I'm done now--sorry!

I love using banana clips! I use them because I hate how my hair looks after I take it down from a pony tail. It's also much quicker to use a banana clip. I'm African-American and my hair is very thick. This is a great alternative to a pony tail which can lead to hair breakage.

I remember girls in the mid-80s using these to give a mohawk effect to their hair without having to shave any of their hair off. They'd use the clip to gather all their hair into a longitudinal crest of hair down the center of their skull, pulling the sides up smooth and tight, then teasing and spraying the mass of the hair up while still leaving it much more natural-looking than a mohawk would have been.

BTW- if your hair is a bit thin the bananna clips make your hair look fuller when you put them together they stay in!! unlike these ones in the stores you buy that are attached at the bottom and never stays in your hair!! I started wearing them again! lol I loved wearing them in the 80s! They give your hair a really nice fullness...besides, as someone commented on here...why not start your own trend. Who cares what others think? If you like it, then go for it. I bought some and have fallen in love with them all over again! :) As we used to say "They are like, totally awesome" lol ;)

Loved banana clips and would like to get some really nice ones, I have a problem closing at the top..either I get it closed and see that all my hair isn't in or I get it all in and it won't close :( we use to make really pretty ones with ribbon/lace in all colors
