My Husband is in an 80's coverband and they occasionally dress as 80's icons. He does the Prince look and rocks it!

God I hate to admit this, but in junior high I made myself a pair of "Prince" pants by sewing white buttons down the legs and on an angle across the front onto a pair of black satin pants. I also had a puffy white shirt with lace down the front, black high-heeled boots, lace gloves, a black fedora hat with white sash, and a black lace veil I wore over one eye like he did. ("When Doves Cry" video is where this all came from.) I actually wore this getup to a club (without the veil.) My mom took pictures that I pray my husband NEVER sees! I even wore a "raspberry" beret around. What a geek I was!

As Prince himself would have told you at the time (the mid-1980s), his frilly-shirts-paisley-and-purple phase during "Purple Rain" and Paisley Park and all that was a deliberate revival of 1960s styles (and people in the 1960s had been reviving styles of the 1600s-1700s). This was the era when Prince discovered sixties-revival bands like the Bangles and the Three O'Clock and was trying to incorporate their look and sound in songs like "Raspberry Beret". He did combine it with eighties trends like fingerless gloves and moussed hair.
