They were called slouch socks. I loved these cause I have skinny legs on the bottom and they helped hide my chicken leg ankles.

As others here are saying, these were called slouch socks in the eighties. You could buy loose, thickly ribbed ones in a variety of colors, but pale pastels and white were most common. The style originated in the mid-seventies with designers like Perry Ellis as part of the oversized, natural-fiber "Big Look" or "Soft Look." In the eighties, males and females wore them. Before they were commercially mass-marketed, I used to try to achieve the look by letting regular white athletic socks get old and stretched out and let them bunch and even flop around my ankles. My mom hated that, was always on me about "those awful socks."
