My mom loved big hair. I remember she had me use the curling iron and half went up, hairspay while still in curler, and half went down, hairspray while still in curler. Then don't for get to tease!

Oh Man, I could never get my hair big enough!!! I can remember spraying the sides with hair spray and driving with my head out the window to get the sides to REALLY stand way out. How embarrassing!!!

Oh My Gawd! Yes, the curling iron on the bottom half, but the best and fastest way for me to get the highest of the high? A blow dryer in one hand and a can of Aqua-Net in the other. Blow the hair straight up and the sides out while spraying at the same time. Bam instant BIG hair!

not only 1988, I'd say 1984-1990, before that it was just mostly big feathered hair. but it seems girls got their hair even bigger by 1988-1989

I agree with 80sfan, only I recall the big bangs look all the way up until about 1993 or 4! :X

For proof big hair lasted way beyond 1989, watch an early 90's episode of Full House!

I should have bought stock in hair spray in the 80's. While my daughter was getting ready for school all I could hear coming from the bathroom was the "pssssss" of the hairspray can. She could have gone outside during a hurricane and not one hair would be out of place. The hairspray left soooo much overspray all over the bathroom that I had to actually remove some of it with a razor blade. When she outgrew the aqua-net I redid the whole bathroom.

I had the worst time making my mother understand why my hair had to be so big. I hated it when my hair would fall. I felt as though my world was going to end, but now to see that my daughters are wanting to do the same just makes me laugh. Oh the memories... lol!

These were as ubiquitous in the late 80s/early 90s as wings were in the late 70s. Just like with wings, the big bangs or big prow-shaped mass of hair on the forehead or whatever (it was the vertical front volume that was key) just like with wings, the big bangs were there no matter what the rest of your hair was like. If you had a ponytail, the big bangs were still there. If you had a chignon, the big bangs were still there. I remember people mocking them as "crispy bangs" at the time because they were crackly stiff with hairspray.

I used to work for Motorola (1981-2000), and found an old employee badge in a box out in the shed. I laughed at how big I wore my bangs back then. My husband thought I looked funny back then. (I wasn't married to him at that time).

Not to be rude, but this is one of the many '80s styles I could not wait to see disappear. The mullet is another one.
