Description
Sex: M/F
Type of clothing: Big Hair
When it was popular: 80's
Description: Not only the rockers had big hair, but everyone. Remember the "rainbow" (the big teased-up wave in the front)? The big, poofy feathered hair? And, as mentioned here, too, the "bumper bangs" (the curled down, big, big bangs).

If I was a teen back then my thick frizzy hair would've come in handy. Now I have to straighten it.

I STILL have big hair!! I'm a lifelong fan. My hair is nearly 4 feet long, and it's all one length.

80s big hair was different than 70s big hair. 70s big hair was basically meant to look kind of natural, even if it took a lot of effort: usually flat on the crown and flaring out toward the shoulders in waves with wings or layering. Even Farrah Fawcett's labor-intensive hairstyle was supposed to look naturally wind-tossed. In the early 80s, punk and 60s revivals influenced women with long hair to tease their hair up vertically, especially over the forehead, using gels or whatever they had. Unlike the bouffant styles of the early 60s, the teasing was done only at the base of the hair so that it stood away from the skull before falling in a sort of unkempt, even ravaged look.

I had big hair even as a kid! My hair icon was Candace Cameron "DJ" on Full House who was around my age. Permed all over long & gelled or moussed and teased, curling iron on the bangs with tons of hairspray to keep it "high". I graduated from high school in 1995 and in my yearbook some girls were STILL doing the big 80's hair, I personally gave it up in 1990 for a one-length hennaed bob and then parted in the center waist length hair during 90's grunge era.

My mother complained I had too much hair on my head, but I just told her I needed a trim!

See, I went with the perm and "flower petal" bangs, where you curled the top half up, bottom half down, sprayed them to hell and then separated and arranged them until they formed a perfect circle. I got really good at it too -- those things had to have stood up at least an inch above my head. In all pictures taken of me circa 1987 it looks like I have a teased hair mushroom cloud on my forehead.

I never used any of that gel or mousse or horrible hairspray on my hair!! That stuff does so much damage it isn't funny. Natural is much better.

I still think that big hair looks better. Within reason, though. I remember girls who had bangs that stood straight up 4 to 6 inches during my senior year(89). That DID look ridiculous. I hate the straight hairstyles that are "In" nowadays. I think they look ugly.
