Still popular among some goths, emos, and punk rockers, and myself during certain times of the year.

Yeah, don't think this fad ever died. Guilty. My hair is currently Dark brown and Purple. last month was red and brown, previously blonde and pink. My son has red and brown. next month it will be black and blue.........

I think it's more mainstream now than it was in the 80s. In the 80s, it was definitely fashionable, and yes initiated by punk, but not many people did it, except for a few trendies. Today, it seems like you see women with sections of their hair dyed in impossible colors almost as often as you see bleached and highlighted hair.

Not to mention popular with scene/club kids.

Different color hair was fun to look at, but many people used PERMANENT color instead of the kind that washes out.

I use green temporary spray-in dye to put streaks in my hair for St. Patrick's Day. Then I wash it out. I have some clip-in extensions dyed in weird colors (even coon tails) that I use other times.
