Description
Sex: female
Type of clothing: accessories
When it was popular: early '80s
Description: These barrettes were shaped like a long oval with a straight piece on a hinge that bisected them (and which went under your hair and attached on the other end of the oval). Sometimes they were painted with little designs on the oval part. Came in sets of two. I completely forgot about them until I saw a friend of mine with one the other day. I nearly clawed it out of her hair.

These were called BD or B&D and they had straight ones with rhinestones in them, also several colors. I am desperately trying to find them too. Wish I would have kept mine! Let me know if you find some and I will do the same Susan sldpvb@aol.com

OMG!!! I loved these barrettes! I have very thick hair and these were the only barrettes that would hold all my hair securely. I even had some in the shape of hearts.
Jackie - July 02, 2008 - Report this comment
These need to come back! Especially for those of us with thick hair.
Tina - July 03, 2008 - Report this comment
I loved these. There were many different variations and they were in beautiful colors. If my memory is correct, they were European or even Scandinavian. I distinctly remember that between the initials of the name of the company was a '+' It might be B+D... I loved those!

Thank heavens for "27 Dresses"! I thought I was alone in my search, but I see that there are a lot of gals with voluminous hair who loves these barrettes. I have a red one and a blue one left from the late 70's/early 80's and they both say "Made in France". The B&D sounds familiar, but I can't say for sure. I would love to see these in the stores again!
Stephy - October 22, 2008 - Report this comment
I've seen these in the dollar store I actually bought a few and I don't even use them have fine straight hair.
Bonni - October 23, 2008 - Report this comment
Stephy, what city are you in? I'm going to hit my local dollar store, but if I can't find them there, would you consider selling your barrettes to me? (ha! it's worth a shot, right?) bonni.stover@gmail.com
Amy - December 30, 2008 - Report this comment
I need these, so someone please tell me where to get them! These were the best ever, and I lost my last one about 5 years ago. I've been dreaming of it, and then saw one in 27 Dresses
Susan - March 14, 2009 - Report this comment
the oval shaped ones were made by B&D( Buch and Deichmann. I have some and they are marked as such and also marked made in Denmark. Back then you could buy them at better dept. stores and better mall stops or boutiques. Luckily I've hung onto all of the ones I purchased in the 80's as I can't seem to find a source to by from now.
Kristi - April 12, 2009 - Report this comment
I've been looking for one of these for years! Could you tell me which Dollar Store chain you found them at, please?

Has anyone found a source for these barrettes? Let us know if you have!
Lauren - June 13, 2009 - Report this comment
Maybe we should start a petition to convince B+D to start making them again?
Susan - July 06, 2009 - Report this comment
I have started an online petition to see if we can get B + D to start making these barrettes again. Please sign my petition and spread the word to all of your thick-haired friends! I noticed that we aren't supposed to enter links here, but I hope they will make an exception! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/buch-deichmann-bring-back-our-barrettes
Ariane C - October 06, 2009 - Report this comment
I have a few that I dearly hang on to, and I am SO going to sign the petition!!! These need to come back, and big time. The best and they don't ruin or pull your hair out as a result, like many hair accessories do.

The B+D barrettes were magical. I saved up my babysitting money to buy them at Bloomingdales. They even made amazing hairbands but my favorite were the straight ones with one rhinestone (so chic) and the oval (excellent for holding hair in place) The color ranges were spectacular. Has anyone heard back from B+D?
Deir - January 02, 2010 - Report this comment
I am obsessed with these things too and just wrote to B + D on their site and said, bring them back!! I really miss them. My mom was too "thrifty" to let me get them at Bloomingdale's in the 80's, so I thought I'd find some on ebay now, but no luck :(
yogamom - February 20, 2010 - Report this comment
I am considering selling my large collection of B&D barrettes on ebay. I saved them for my daughter, but she doesn't wear any hair ornaments. I loved them, and used my allowance/babysitting money to buy them in the early 1980's. Would people be interested in them? My hair is not long anymore. Hate to part with them, but they are just sitting in a box right now.
Susan - March 16, 2010 - Report this comment
Have you sold them yet? I would totally be interested!
Susan - March 22, 2010 - Report this comment
I found a website that sells hinged hair clips that are quite similar to the hinged barrettes that we all love. I think this may be the solution. Check out flexi8.com. (I'm sorry for the link, but I think it's vital)

I haven't sold my B&D barrettes yet, but I definitely plan to get them listed in the next month or so. I was waiting to see if anyone returned to this site and answered my first post about potential interest. I want them to go to a good home!!

YOGAMOM, HOW MUCH ARE YOU SELLING YOUR OVAL B&D BATTETTES FOR?
yogamom - May 24, 2010 - Report this comment
I am listing some of my oval B&D barrettes on ebay this week. I am also listing pairs of B&D barrettes with the small rhinestone accent. I hope they go to someone who will appreciate them as much as I do. I haven't had long hair since high school and my daughters do not wear hair accessories at all. I don't want my collection to just sit in a box anymore if someone else can enjoy them. I think I have listed them at a very reasonable price -- they are in like-new condition. Hope anyone interested sees this message and takes a look. If they sell, I will list the rest of my collection next week.

I did list some of my pieces on ebay already. I have some pieces left and have 2 listings this week - one small denim blue oval and a pair of small ovals with scrolling design that are periwinkle blue. Search Buch & Deichmann as subject item or emstiques as a seller. I will try to put the rest of what I have left on ebay asap. Sorry you didn't see them. I have two large figure 8 pieces left - maroon and tan. Then I have three beautiful large ovals with flower scrolling - pink, medium brown, and olive brown. My neighbor is listing them for me -- you can email her through ebay and it will get to me if you have questions. Thanks!

I have more of my Buch & Deichmann items on ebay this week, and a few more to come by the end of the week, I hope. Hope anyone who is interested will find them on ebay.

You might like the barretts made by France Luxe (available on Amazon or directly from France Luxe). The style described is tige boule, french for stem-ball, referring to the hinged stem that fits into the ball opposite the hinge. There are quite a few styles, some under $10 each, some for over $100, lots in between. I just found them after years of keeping my 1980s barrettes and wishing I could find more. I am not associated with the company. :)

These are back! I saw a friend wearing one the other day. Asked her where she got it and she said at the hair salon! So someone is making them and selling them -- at least in San Francisco.
suzyg - November 29, 2010 - Report this comment
I haven't heard anyone talke about the other barrettes they sold. I am interested in the simple barrettes that had a rhinestone on them. They were also made by B+D. I had a ton of them and then cut my hair short. I had given them to my niece and well that was the end of that. I have a daughter now with the same thick hair and would love them for her. They were also in every color imaginable. Anyone know where I can get my hands on them?

I have naturally slippery hair, so any hair ornament I wanted to wear had to be put on extra-tight!

Hi all! I have one of these old Buch and Deichmann barrettes (1980 is marked in it), a lovely purple little barrette which I love, not only because it belonged to my elder sister, but also because it is sooo good. Some months ago a quite old lady stopped me on the street to tell me how beautiful it was. :) Well, I would really like to find (and buy) some more if they still were to be found somewhere.

@ Girl in Madrid & all others in this desperate quest to locate our B&D barrettes. The Goody hair product brand has these new Comfort-Flex Updo Barrettes (item #09291)that are similar to the B&D ones. Of course theyre no match for the real ones! Also, has anyone found the name of the salon thats suppose to have them in San Francisco? And what happened to the petition site? Any suggestions how to get it back up???

In the August 2011 issue of Lucky magazine, the barrettes are advertised on page 114. Sold in C.O. Bigelow stores by Charles Wahba for $5 each. I didn't see the barrettes on the Charles Wahba site (but there are other cute hair accessories!), so I don't know if they size is the same as the B+D ones, but from the photo, they look spot on.

I'm looking for the hairslides/barrettes with the diamond as I now have short hair. However I have found the other ones with the stick on etsy for £9 each from a US seller called PIAVIVAS. I spent a FORTUNE on these/the diamond ones/hair combs in the 1980s, all sadly now lost. Do you remember the kink they left in your hair after using them?
Susan - August 29, 2011 - Report this comment
Like oh my gawd! I just saw the barrettes on the etsy page mentioned in the comment above. I would totally buy a few, but the shipping cost would be too much to my country ($15 shipping on each barrette). Too bad! Is anyone else going to buy one of these?

FINALLY! thx emorcas & susan for your post. i too woould love to buy a few pairs but they are way too expensive. i'm just glad i know where to get them when i'm ready to treat myself. so i guess i'll keep wearing the goody brand ones (mentioned in an earlier post)!

These were Buch + Deichmann, and they weren't cheap. Sometimes they had a little rhinestone in them, and in every great colour you could imagine. What was special about them was the quality of the plastic - really good quality, strong, and shiny. Like I say, they weren't cheap. And they didn't hang on cards like barrettes usually do - they were in a stand with like 50, bright orange, deep reds, blues, greens, yellows.
