These were revivals of boned, 1950s-style structured bodices. In the 70s, it was tube tops, at the end of the 70s (1978, to be exact), designers revived bustiers and Madonna popularized them in the middle of the 80s. I remember the first time I saw one at the end of the 70s. Some celebrity woman was on, like, the Johnny Carson Show wearing one, and they looked really odd at the time, very 1950s and stiff. Carson commented on it and the woman said, "Look, I move and it doesn't!" She twisted around in it and it stayed as rigid as armor. By the end of the 80s, they were everywhere.
