I LOVED these! Also, not mentioned, was that often beads were attached to the ends. My mom made me green and white ones to match my favourite outfit. I must have been in 1st or 2nd grade. I also had pink and blue store-bought ones. I still have them, too! A good friend of mine had a huge boxful her mom made for her.

Here is a link to instructions on how to make the barrettes. http://www.wrights.com/wrights/class/kidscrafts/braidbarrett/braidbarrett.htm If it won't take you right there (I had that problem) then go to the Wrights site, then Classroom link, then Kids link, and the barrette instructions are in the middle column down towards the bottom. Have fun making them!!!!

oh yeah barrettes were very big the younger girls used to wear many in patterns in their hair in florescent colors green, pink, yellow, orange and they had like 4 red beads on them. they were mainly for keeping long hair out of your face i think some of them wore them on their lapels as pins, and shirts as decoration to

Oh I can't stop smiling! I had so many of these! I remember going to Drug Emporium with my mom and "if I was good while she was shopping" I would get to pick a pack of these. I would follow behind my mom in the store as silent as can be and not make a peep LoL. Weren't these by the company called "Goody" or "Goodie"? On some of the strings we would add one bead a the bottom to give the ribbon some weight at the bottom so if it was windy at recess the ribbons would stay straight down and not get lost in my hair. My mom would be weaving the ribbons after dinner at our kitchen table so I could wear my new one to school the next day.
