They were actually around starting about 1985. We used to wear them in the winter w/ longjohns underneath. Weren't we the fashion icons?

These were so uncool during the ultra-casual 70s, when everyone wore really short jean cutoffs, that it was surprising and a bit jarring to see them come back in at the end of the 70s and the 80s. Like so many other things, they were part of the revival of 1950s styles that occurred in the early 80s. The first time I wore a pair, they looked really awkward. And the earliest ones sold in normal shops were still short-ish - no long than mid-thigh - and just a little fuller than the tight shorts worn in the 70s, very odd-looking but I guess people had to transition in to real, old-style, long and full Bermudas. They really were so unfashionable in the 70s that if somebody's shorts were perceived to be too long, they were ridiculed by saying, "You're wearing Bermuda shorts!" implying that they looked as backwards as Milton Burle or something.
