Earrings on guys now that was a hot trend back in the 80s. The first guy with his left ear pierced was John Waite remember in the Missing You video you guys. Now that was freaking sexy.

Oh man this was a big trend in the 80's and it lasted up until the early-mid 90's, you hardly see guys wearing earrings now, well...dangle and loop kinds lol, the 80's was a time for major change and many taboos broken.

Back then it was are they a "right" ear or "left" ear and now men can wear earrings just like women can in both ears...that myth went out with the times.
Jan Griffiths - February 13, 2010 - Report this comment
That myth is still around, at least where I live.(Northern Arizona). I think guys look good with earrings, but my husband won't let me pierce his ear.

I got my left ear pierced in 87 for my 13th birthday. Everyone thought it was awesome at the time. Around 96-97 I started getting more holes in that ear and I got one in my right since by that point guys with both ears pierced were already a common sight.

Yep, the guys-with-earrings thing started in the 80s, about the same time girls started wearing asymmetric and mismatched earrings. First, you'd see guys with just one earring, with one side supposedly meaning you were gay. After a while, people forgot all that and just did whatever they wanted - multiple piercings, ear cuffs, painful parts of the ear pierced, etc. The first guy I knew who had a pierced ear was a postpunk kinda guy who liked to wear a razor blade on a chain in one ear. And our high school choir director in the early 80s always made guys remove their earrings for performances, even though they were so small you couldn't see them from the audience.

Seeing guys wearing earrings shocked me, but I got used to it. I was told the right ear was gay and the left ear was cool! Is that still true today?

I remember that there was a rule about the left ear = straight, right ear = gay, that was definitely mentioned a few times. But, it was not a strict rule. However, it influenced my decision. So, my first earring was in the left. But, the rule didn't stick, because by 1984, both my ears had multiple ear piercings. Then add ear cuffs… remember those? Of course, I had rings, necklaces, bracelets, and wore whatever I thought was cool for me. I didn't give a crap what others thought, and really neither did anyone else. I also wore eye-liner, dyed my hair black, wore boots and my leather jacket went with me where ever I went, despite the weather. I still have my old leather motorcycle jacket, a Vandals t-shirt and a Siouxsie and the_Banshees t-shirt.

Yep, the saying for the left ear = straight & right ear = gay was "left is right, and right is wrong". Anyone else wish life was as fun & simple as I remember it being back in the 80's. I would not want to be a teen growing up now...life was so much easier back then without all the social media that's out there now, you know back when you actually called people & talked to them on the phone.

Yeah, I was part of the whole "left ear straight, right ear gay" thing in the mid 80's. Pierced my left ear in 1986 at age of 21 and wore one for a few years. Took it out for a while then got the desire at 40 to wear an earring again. By now (2005) both ears pierced on guys was more popular but I was worried what people would think of my having both ears pierced. Turned 50 last year and don't give a crap what people think so I pierced my right ear and wear earrings in both ears now.

The phrase I remember for guys’ earrings was “Left is right and right is wrong.”!

My husband finally wanted his left ear pierced, and I was more than happy to do it. He's had it for about 2 years now, and has stretched to a 14 gauge. He likes to go through my body jewelry drawer to choose other pieces he'd like to wear.

Got my left ear pierced twice, lobe and cartilage, back in 4th grade around 85. By the time i was in highschool in 91, I had 3 in my left and one in my right, I had no F's to give, I was a punker/metalhead. St Louis metro area. BY the time I was 24 I had per icings, body in the 20's and living in Northern California. I stopped and started removing them around 29 when I had 32 piercings in total then. I still have 2 in my left ear and one in my right today at 44yrs old.

I was 11 in 1980, just moved to London with my parents from another part of Europe and I was shocked to see some boys in my new school wearing an earring in their left ear. I was really taken by it and kept looking around the school to see who else was wearing it. I told my mum one day that some boys in my school are wearing an earring - at that moment I was merely reacting to a novelty, not even thinking about getting one, but her reaction was immediately negative. She said that it was a stupid fad and that my dad would not like me to look gay. Of course, this prompted a counter reaction, so I got even more fascinated and soon enough, started to dream of showing up in school with an earring of my own. In the meantime, by 1981, some of those boys who already had an earring started getting the second in the same ear, which made me even more nevious, but the climax happened around 1983 when one day as I waiting in line for the school meal, one of the boys who never had any earrings suddenly showed up with three in his left and one in his right ear - he got them all at the same time! For whatever reason, this event turned out to be pivotal in my teen life because I knew that some day, I would have to get multiple ear piercings, but it took me a number of years to get there because I never forgot my mum's reaction and the threat that it would upset my dad if anybody saw me wearing an earring. I still wear that combination of 3+1 even in my early 50s.
