Really popular in 1978 and 79, and extending into the early 80s.

Never liked clutch purses. Too easy for someone to grab and run off with. When you went out dancing, you had to keep hold of it all the time.

I love clutch purses! I remember the ones my mom had in the mid 80's were often very colorful, including one that was mostly black with teal and yellow on the foldover part in kind of a seashell shape! LOL Recently I've found several of these purses in thrift stores, usually leather or vinyl. I like the solid colors, such as yellow or grey (they translate better into today's styles IMO). I'd agree clutches are less practical than bags with a shoulder strap, but I like them w/ certain outfits and always get tons of compliments. I think they are a funky addition to give a retro edge to some outfits.
