i remember these. many different colors!

I had a lot of different ones, but somehow, the one I loved most got stolen by somebody who I thought was a "friend." I got another with similar colors, but I learned not to trust anyone alone in your room after that. ;(

I was so into these in 4th and 5th grade. We made them with embroidery floss and some of us got really good at it and did our own elaborate designs. They were very colorful and honestly I think a lot of kids just made their own and wore them, so the whole point of "giving it to a friend" was not really adhered to! I was "famous" for my zig zag design hahahaha So nerdy. I remember my dad made me a special board with a big clamp at one end and I wanted to take it to church and work on my friendship bracelets during the service.

I made these ALL the time! The big wide ones were so popular as were the ones with designs. My Dad bought me the embroidery thread & got me a special clipboard to hold on to the threads as I made them. I usually made a 4 or 6 stringer. Bright girly colors. U can buy them to this day actually. I saw them for sale at a dollar store recently & was brought back to the elementary & middle school years in a flash!

People still make these!

Kids still make these- apparently for at least the past few years, my 11 y/o daughter says that for a good chunk of the afternoon at day camp, all the girls break out their boxes of embroidery floss and knot away... I loved making these in 1985 - and I love even more getting elaborate ones my kids make today!
