These were popular where I lived at the end of the 70s and earliest 80s and thought of as part of "new wave" gear. We called them doctors shirts and wore them covered with band buttons/badges, skinny black ties, wraparound sunglasses, skinny jeans, cropped/spiky hair, and early 60s-style sneakers, often with checkerboards hand-markered on.
