Those shirts just weren't for the guys. I still have mine from my high school. I have 2 that I kept as a memory of the good ole days.

I grew up in the 80s and still sport the old half shirt. If the abs are tight dont be afraid to show it.
john - December 02, 2008 - Report this comment
If your in shape the half shirt never goes out of style(for strait guys). not to be worn every where, but at home in the summer, at the gym, or while exerciseing there great, plus my girl friend loves it.

I love when my boyfriend wears a muscle shirt cut in half around the house. Seeing his abs on display is so sexy!!!
George - January 30, 2009 - Report this comment
I grew up in the 80s. I used to wear half cut off shirts all the time. I still do in the gym and when I am running.
Jim - February 10, 2009 - Report this comment
I had a million in the 80s and still have most of them. I'm a fit, straight guy and have no problem wearing something that's comfortable, even if gay guys have mostly co-opted the image. Since when is a man's bellybutton gay? LOL. I wear them at home, to the beach, to the gym, jogging, on the bball court. I do agree that there's not much reason to just wear it out everywhere, but for heat-intense situations or lounging, yeah!
Keith - April 16, 2009 - Report this comment
The trend will come back...Just wait! American Eagle and Abercrombie even might bring it back. LOL
Dave - April 20, 2009 - Report this comment
I grew up wearing half-shirts all the time. I still have several which I enjoy wearing around the house, the beach, gym, and cycling. I find them to be cool in the warm weather and very comfortable! If you are fit go for it. I agree with Jim, what is gay about a guy's abs?
Brad - April 28, 2009 - Report this comment
Ive noticed while searching the web that there are a lot of strait guys who still like to sport the half shirt. I thought I was the only one, who would like to see this trend come back. Half shirts are comfortable and if you have the abs try one on youll be hooked (so will your girl friend)
John - May 06, 2009 - Report this comment
I was just thinking about this.. It is amazing that the half shirt was in style in the 1980's for guys(I remember having a few) to wear and in 2009 to wear them society might think you were gay. Yet, it is ok, for women to wear, belly baring shirts. What happened in a matter of 29 years? And contrary to what others have said on here I know that there would be places people would give you crap about it today if you are a guy wearing them. That is what is sad about the world we live in now. I personally don't think that there is anything gay about it and as a straight guy I miss the days when people didn't just question or jump to conclusions about someone just because of how they dressed.
CATALINA - September 09, 2009 - Report this comment
I love to see my boyfriend wearing half shirt. I am 17 and this fashion fad of the 80s is very cool. I have cut many of my boyfrineds shirts in half and he looks hot showing up his abs.
Stacey - September 15, 2009 - Report this comment
My boyfriend ripped one of his shirts at the bottom so just for fun I made him a half shirt. I love it, it draws attention to his six pack. Now Ive made him more and I make him wear them, now he kinda likes them. Try it.
George - September 19, 2009 - Report this comment
Sice the last time I wrote a comment, it is nice to see that guys and gals have a nice opinion of half shirts. My wife and I grew up in the 80s and have never uderstood the gay conection. After all the half shirt originated from collegue and pro-football. Very few gays in that sport. I will wear them. I do have good set of abs and I don't care about what others will think.

Hey Stacey and Carolina, I am the dude lying on the grass with my head on football. Post some pics of your boyfriends wearing your homemade half shirts!
Ben - October 19, 2009 - Report this comment
I'm a straight guy, but I actually like belly shirts shirts better on guys than on girls. I think the girls have worn the concept out, so it's the guys' turn now. Half shirts are comfortable and practical for sports. I'd wear one if they came back in style. I think it's stupid that some people associate them with homosexuality. There's no real reason for that connotation. Come on, guys! Show off your bellybuttons! Let's bring the trend back! We've already seen the return of some old fads from the 70s and 80s; could the male belly shirt be next? I hope so.
Catalina - October 20, 2009 - Report this comment
I love half shirts on boys. My boyfriend already has like twenty of them. They look cool.
Mike - October 22, 2009 - Report this comment
I thought I was the only strait guy who still liked half shirts, after looking around on the web there are lots of of us. In order to bring them back you just have to start wearing them again, I do. Im really glad to see girls like them as well.
Jay - October 30, 2009 - Report this comment
I think this gay association of the half-shirt is very silly. In the 1980's the coolest guys in our school strutted around in half-shirts. They got a lot of attention from the girls in part because of their confidence and sex appeal. Many college football teams donned half-shirts as well. It would probably have to originate there again in order for it to become fashionable once more. BTW..Since when is it not masculine to show off your six-pack?

This summer I will wear half shirts again. I am runner and as in the 80s when I was a kid, half shirts were cool to use. Nothing wrong to show off the belly botton and abs. If you are fit go and wear them
Andy Mac - February 21, 2010 - Report this comment
If you're a boy, they look best if you have any "outie" belly button. I always notice lots of stares in public with mine!
Jake - March 04, 2010 - Report this comment
Hey Andy Mac, I have an 'outie' belly button too so will have to try wearing a half shirt to see if people notice it. In summertime, I sometimes keep my shirt buttons undone and always see people looking at my abs and my funny 'outie' tummy button.
Chris - April 04, 2010 - Report this comment
Youre right Jake. I sometimes leave my shirt open on hot and humid days and always notice people staring at my belly and belly button.
Andres - April 06, 2010 - Report this comment
half shirts are chic magnet. The girls keep staring at my abs and belly button.
Jay - April 11, 2010 - Report this comment
That's great that you guys see why half-shirts were so cool back in the 80s. It is true that men with 'outie' belly-buttons and/or six packs got more attention from the girls. For those who wear half-shirts, please take the time to post a picture of yourselves. In order to re-introduce the half-shirt as a style for men, we need more images of men in half-shirts circulating around the web!
James - April 23, 2010 - Report this comment
I always liked how it looks. After reading some of the postings I just cut one of my t-shirts. It feels really cool...I think I'm gonna start wearing this in the gym. Are there any sports apparel companies that make half shirts?

I grew up in the 80s and wore these all the time ... back then I was an athlete and was ripped, so it looked good. I have no idea how it came to be associated with being gay over the years, and I agree that's a shame. I think if a guy's got a great mid-section, it should be fine to wear these!
Serena - June 22, 2010 - Report this comment
I think half shirts on guys are hot! My boyfriend is a quarterback on the football team and he always wears an white underarmour half shirt under his jersey....I find it so sexy because he has greats pecs and a 6 pack and the half shirt is so tight on him that it accentuates his pecs and shows off his stomach as the half shirt comes right below his pecs.....I have a gay cousin that loves to see him in it but I have never seen my cousin or any of his friends wear one so I don't understand the gay - half shirt connection either and I'm only 17.
Rene - July 06, 2010 - Report this comment
In the 80s, half shirts were very normal. Even my little brothers used to wear the all the time. It wsa prtty cool to see the guys abs. I thinl if you have the abs, go ahead and try them
Ben - August 26, 2010 - Report this comment
Another great thing about bellyshirts is that you can wear them in places where you're not allowed to go shirtless (like in some gyms) and still keep cool.
Megan - August 29, 2010 - Report this comment
I discovered a photo of my father and his friends sporting the half shirt in 1985. It was funny but they look cool.
Bill - October 01, 2010 - Report this comment
After reading the comments on this site, I decided to make a half shirt to workout in. It kept me alittle cooler and seeing my abs made me work them harder, and I actually had a good looking girl say "I like your stomach". That is all the motivation I needed to keep wearing them.
Sid - October 06, 2010 - Report this comment
There are companies making them again. American Apparel, and a couple others I've seen. Calvin Klein is coming out with a slightly bizarre-looking designer one for guys. I have an Adidas one that stops around my upper stomach, from the 80s, and I wear it to the gym. I kind of like thinking about the girls I talk to while running and lifting looking at my bellybutton. I don't have a six pack but I have a flat stomach.
JR - October 07, 2010 - Report this comment
The good old days of the 80s. I used to wear half shirts everyday. Most of the time I cut them myself. They were available almost at every sport store. My motivation was alwasy how the girls looked at me, that was all the reason to keep sporting the half shirt
Greg - November 11, 2010 - Report this comment
Yeah, I still have some old half-shirts, but only occasionally do I wear one to the gym. They are comfortable, but the main reason to wear them is just to show off your bellybutton...half-shirts are really just navel shirts. So, it just depends on how sexy you feel. Having cut abs is something every guy wants, so it's strange that shirts that show the abs have fallen out of fashion. I was once told in a gym that I couldn't show my bellybutton...that just made me feel hotter, exposing my too-dirty-for-the-public navel.

I just cut off an old t-shirt. I will be wearing it to Gymm today. My abs look great
Dylan - November 20, 2010 - Report this comment
I think people should wear what they want without having to worry what strangers will think. I like to wear these kind of shirts on a hot day even if I am just going to the mall or something, I don't understand how half shirts became associated with homosexuality either, I've seen lots of gay guys and they don't wear half shirts they usually just wear designer shirts and scarves and don't show their navels. I am not gay but I like to wear half shirts and shirts that are too small sometimes, it feels great on a hot day and I feel free. I never got to enjoy these as a kid because I was a very shy kid who always wore long shirts until the end of high school. and most guys should not be afraid to do that, I think they look good on both girls and guys, wear what you want and be free

I too have really no idea where the whole concept of half shirts being “gay” started, but, as you’ll soon read (and hopefully encourage any still-reluctant guys out there to consider the half shirt), my experience wearing them has been completely the opposite! I’m a 22 year-old 100% straight male with well-chiseled abs who is perfectly comfortable with wearing a half shirt in public. I see absolutely nothing “gay” about a guy showing off his belly button…and if anyone thinks that, so what? And besides, while I have many gay friends, I find it very ironic that I have yet to see any of them with their midriffs exposed! I started wearing half shirts in high school for b-ball and football practice, and still usually wear one when working out at the gym or playing sports. It’s the best method to stay cool during a workout, to show off your stuff, and, as I discovered, a great way to meet girls! One time, this hot blonde girl at the gym came up to me and complimented me on my abs, and then ran her hand over them as if to convince herself they were real! She said she loved the look of a man in a half shirt, but her ex-boyfriend didn’t like to wear them. I told her I love wearing half shirts, but had no one to wear them for. After a little more flirting, I asked her out and that Friday, over dinner and a movie, a blossoming relationship began. Fast forward 2 years later, that same hot blonde is now my fiancée and we’re getting married in April!

After reading these posts I cut an old t shirt in half for a workout. A little weird at first walking around the gym where everyone could see my abs, until one of the female trainers walking by looked at my stomach then smiled and said "nice abs". I think Ill be making a few more half shirts.
Dean - December 21, 2010 - Report this comment
It's weird that people have gotten so afraid of seeming gay that they restrict their clothing choices so much. It never would have occurred to me in the 80s to think of half-shirts as gay. It was pretty much only jocks that wore them in the 70s and 80s where I lived. I had no idea people no longer wore them for fear of appearing gay.
Angela - January 02, 2011 - Report this comment
I don't remember these much myself, but a friend of mine who was a teenager in the 80's was showing me his concert t-shirts and a couple of them (Iron Maiden and Dokken, I think) were MADE to be half shirts. Totally cracked me up to think that they actually sold pre-made metal band half shirts for men at concerts in the 80's!
Dean - January 05, 2011 - Report this comment
Another kind of revealing shirt guys (esp. jocks) wore in the 80s to show off their bodies was the open-sided shirt, basically like a sleeveless t-shirt or sleeveless sweatshirt but with no sides at all, the front and back held together only at the shoulders and hem or waistband. Always worn oversized so it could billow open to show off the jock's muscles. At first, guys made them themselves, just cut off the sides. Later, you could buy them that way. There were girls' versions, too, but girls usually wore them over something else, like a tube top or bandeau bra.
William - January 08, 2011 - Report this comment
I wore them in high school junior and senior year practically everyday I had several longer ones that stopped right at or below the navel, also had several of the open-sided shirts that I wore as well. The football team wore their mesh practice jerseys without shirts underneath. That all changed in my senior year the school came out with a dress code and banned them all, but normally let the senior's get by with it.
Dan - January 13, 2011 - Report this comment
Our high school football shirts where half shirts. They where short so they didnt hang out of your jersey. All the girls loved seeing our abs. I still wear a half shirts to workout all the time.
Tory - February 20, 2011 - Report this comment
I think a lot more people are fat today, so to make themselves feel better anyone that is thin or hot must be gay. I remember this style from the '80s very well. It was definitely not considered gay back them. Hope it does come back in style - I'm still thin - and hot - haha
Tom - February 22, 2011 - Report this comment
Half shirts were great and cool in the very hot humid days of the summer. As a kid, I used to rock the half shirt all the time. I had some that I cut myself and others that I got from the stores. I think they are coming back.
JT - March 09, 2011 - Report this comment
I like to wear them when working out and I think having my abs exposed is a great motivator to give them an extra workout and keep them in good shape. Girls at the gym are always checking me out and since I haven’t heard one negative comment from them, I’m convinced most girls think half shirts on guys are hot! Far as I’m concerned, any guys who write off half shirts as “gay” are either a. ignorant and narrow-minded, b. jealous they don’t have abs worth showing off , or c. are that insecure about their own sexual orientation – or a combination of all 3. If you have nice abs and like to show them off, and could care less what some homophobic pinhead might happen to think about it, go for it!
JR - May 28, 2011 - Report this comment
I going to follow JT advice. I going to cut off one of my T-shirts in half and wear to the Gym. I do have great abs. I will write a report after that.
Paul - June 03, 2011 - Report this comment
I think there are a lot of similarities between guys in half- shirts and guys wearing leather pants. It takes a LOT of confidence to wear them out in public and enough self-esteem to care less that what you’re wearing has been written off by our **tolerant** society as “gay”. Like half shirts, leather pants are not for every occasion and not all guys can pull off the style. But also like half shirts, girls really love the look and wish that more men would wear them. Totally agree with JT and others. Wear what makes you feel good and just be yourself - everyone else is already taken.

I like to show off my belly and it feels very good. I've been wearing belly shirts since I was 8! I stay fit by running so my abs will look good in half shirts. Keep on wearing them guys!
JC - September 13, 2011 - Report this comment
From what I can tell, half shirts did start with college football, then guys started wearing them. It only changed when the girls started wearing them also, then the guys seemed to stop wearing them. I'd bet that is where the whole stupid "gay" thing came from. You also didn't have to have "abs" to wear them, it looked great even without abs... the only people it didn't look right on was anyone who has a beer belly. Its hypocritical how some can call it gay, yet its just fine when someone goes with no shirt at all. Its just stupid. Kinda stupid like the old time movies where they were required to keep their pants just above the navel if they were shirtless.

Why do I get the feeling that most of these comments were written by either the same person or a couple. Thing is, every website you go to about half tees on men, 95% of the women commenting say it's disgusting. But there are 60 comments here saying girls are swooning over them in the gym and complimenting them. I have actually worn them to my condo gym and not only do people avoid me, the only two girls I managed to get a number from in two years here both gave me fake numbers. Honestly, I'm good looking and in good shape and in normal midriff-covered circumstances (or even shirtless) I have a good success rate. So who are these guys and where do these legions of swooning female fans live? I think all these comments are wishful thinking. I've had I think two girlfriends who tolerated my wearing them at home, never a single one thought it was sexy, and most hate it with a passion.
Stan - March 29, 2013 - Report this comment
I wear them because I want to wear them. And I could care less if a woman liked it or not, women today are so judgemental of what other people where. I could give a **** what anyone thinks, I am an adult and I can wear whatever I feel like. Back in the 80's people didn't judge what others wore as much as now. It is very annoying. Grow up and let people where what they want and mind your own business.

A lot has changed in society in the 6 years since this thread first appeared in 2008. When the first post was made the half shirt was viewed as a nostalgic relic of the 80s that only gay men would wear. Now in 2014 the style is coming back again. Fashion designers rebooted the 80s half shirt as the male crop top a couple years ago. Then celebrities such as Kid Cudi started wearing them. Now in the summer of 2014 the crop top is being embraced by a whole new generation of millennials. Young men posting selfies wearing crop tops are trending big on social media such as twitter and tumblr. Search the hashtag #boysincroptops2k14 if you want to see hundreds or even thousands of pictures. Crop tops for guys is hottest trend this summer that will have an impact on men's fashion for years to come. 2014 will be remembered as the year the half shirt for men came back in style.

I guess one reason why men don't see the point in wearing a half shirt is because it is accepted that men can go with no shirt and bare chested. Of course, they have banned this in most gyms, and if people keep whining then they are probably going to force shirts for men in swimming pools. They even banned Football Half Shirts! Say goodbye to Ezekiel Elliott in the half shirt. They were all over the place in the 1980s and after that the only other guy that wore a half shirt without anybody questioning him is Will Smith. Now that women have over-worn the half shirt, I guess the half shirt now risks being effeminate. And Effeminate just has to mean gay. Even though Gays do Not even wear half shirts. And to the comment about the shirts with open sides in them from the 1980s, that style has been around for ever. Men will have no problem wearing a "sleeveless" shirt exposing their arms, back, chest, and ribs. They also don't seem to be bothered if their lower abs are visible, as long as their belly button is covered. If anybody tries to start a revolution, then others will stop it. The main cause is from bullying and body shaming against Tools. Really, if you don't like the athletic body, then don't look. It's what people do in other nations.

I was 13 when half shirts became popular and to this day I still wear them wherever I go. People compliment me on my innie bellybutton and abs but guys don't need to have abs to wear crop tops.
