Description
Sex: Female
Type of clothing: Sneakers
When it was popular: 1980s
Description: They were Thom McAnn sneakers. The most popular stock #'s were for white ones 79816 and for the black ones 79820. They had no support but were comfortable anyhow. Fayva shoes came out with a sneaker that was similar called Candies but I don't believe sold as well. The balloon sneakers I believe sold for .99.

I USED TO BUY THE BALLOON SNEAKERS AT K MART. LUCKILY I GOT DUPLICATES OF ALL THE COLORS. I ALWAYS BOUGHT THE ONES THAT HAD THE ZIPPER CLOSURES. I BOUGHT THEM AS RECENTLY AS 2008 AND STILL HAVE AT LEAST 8 PRS OF THEM - EVERY COLOR THAT THEY OFFERED. HAVEN'T SEEN THEM THE PAST FEW TIMES I'VE BEEN AT K MART. THEY WERE/ARE MY FAVORITE SHOES.

I remember that there were Balloon hightops that were a different color on the inside if you rolled the top down.

I still love these - they are cut narrow and fit my narrow feet - I can't wear Keds. Every two years I spend $8 or $9 at Kmart - they are my beach shoes. Pink or white, whatever I can find. :)

I use to work at Thom McAn in Boston in the 80s. The Ballons shoes came in slip-ons and lace ups. The white Ballons were the most popular pair of shoes in the store. Every salesperson knew the stock number by heart. I believe we sold the shoes at 9.99 or 12.99. I wish I would have stocked up on them when I was working. I found this site because I saw a skechers commercial that reminded me of Ballons # 79816.

I really miss those shoes . I use to buy 5 or 6 pairs at a time . They felt great on my feet . I can't understand why such a well selling shoe was discontinued . Mine were candies ,then hanes her way came out with them . How do you get in touch with these company's so they might consider putting them back on the market .

I've been looking for them for the past two years, haven't found them. They were the most comfortable shoes I've ever had. If I ever get my hands on where to buy them, I'm getting 5 pairs.

I worked at Thom McAn in the 80s. I can testify to the truth of your comment — we knew all of the stock numbers by heart. Crazy thing is that Thom McAn was successfully sued by LA Gear for copying their shoes and calling them Thom McAn balloons!
