I'm a girl, but I don't think any of my guy friends would want to admit to having one. Apparently, they've made somewhat of a comeback, especially in Europe, but it's a more modern version of the cut.

I think it's funny that the shag of the seventies turned into the mullet of the eighties. Frankly, I prefer the shag. I especially hate the BR Cyrus version with the super long hair in the back. It looked like he crossed Elvis Prestley with Cher. Truly dreadful, but those were the days!

I guess you could say I had a mullet from 1986-1990 although mine was more like the hairstyle Richard Marx had. I started growing it when I was 12 and rarely got a haircut. I cut it off a couple of months after I turned 16 and by that point I looked like one of the guys from that freestyle group Linear.

the guy in that photo doesn't look like he has a mullet to me. A redneck mullet maybe, but not an 80s mullet.

I'm not always sure what's meant by "mullet" these days, but in the 80s it meant short on top and long in back. Where I lived in the early 80s, girls called them bilevels and guys called them short-on-top-long-in-back. They were the most popular style in my high school after the late 70s wings and layering went out at the beginning of the 80s. Sometimes the top would be spiked up and sometimes the whole thing would be permed tight. I never liked them, but they were widely worn.

I compared chopped off and "feathered" sides to mullets when looking at people wearing them, and they both took a year to grow out.

These were another very early '80s style, after '81 it became more of a rural style along with 'rat tails'. I'm pretty sure I would have been laughed off the campus if I came to school with one of these in 1982 or later.
