There are always paisley shirts somewhere, but they had peaks in popularity in the late 50s through mid-60s, establishing in the latter era the association with psychedelia that remains today. In the early to mid-80s, we used to haunt thrift shops looking for small-collared early 60s versions. Rarely found any. In 1982/83, the California-based "Paisley Underground" bands were named for their devotion to making music that sounded like it came out of the mid-1960s, and they sometimes wore the paisley shirts were coveted. In the mid-80s, you started seeing paisley prints on the oversized shirts characteristic of the decade. For some reason, my memory is fixing on one that was overly common: an oversized, small-collared shirt with dropped shoulders and long shirttails in back, yellow with small, widely-spaced, grey paisleys scattered evenly all over it. Things like that were so common and so cheaply mass produced that I hated them. But they'd probably be adored by collectors today.

Wore paisley shirts all the time in the 80s, including an original 60s one. There was a big psychedelic undertow to things then, possibly as a reaction to the blandness of music post- 1982.
