The fad started before 89 because Madonna wore them in her Like a Virgin days.

these were WAY before 89 and they were typewriter bands. in the early 80s, (when madonna was first making a worldwide splash, you could find them in gumball machines.

I remember these being really big around 1985, stacks of black rubber ones on women and some very trendy men. A friend of mine had matching, huge hoop earrings that she made herself about that time.

You are all way off. They weren't called "jelly" bracelets and they weren't type writer parts and there was no Madonna designer! These were a fashion statement as far back as the late 70's/early 80's and they were worn by cholas!! That's right, young Latina girls were wearing these in various intertwined patterns from there upper wrists and through their fingers waaaay before Madonna made them popular. Madonna was just using what was already on the streets! And I can't for the life of me think what the the wardrobe dept. of Silver Spoons was thinking! I remember thinking "WTF, why is that little blond boy rocking chola bracelets?!". Lol.

Cholas, Punk Rockers, Maripol.. The 1970s was the early life of the "Jelly Bracelets", but they were made a worldwide Fashion trend by MADONNA.
