Description
Sex: Both
Type of clothing: Jacket Shell
When it was popular: 1981
Description: This was a 2 tone jacket, with a half zip and large front pocket manufactured in Utah. It was popular with the skiing set. It became a fashion accessory around 1981 where trendsetters would wear them with turtlenecks. There were also knock-offs you could pick up at Target but you could tell the real McCoy if there was a tab off the pocket with the silhouette of a grandma sitting in a rocking chair. Retail price for a kids version was around .00.

The jackets were called "Ptarmigans." I had one that was blue and yellow. It was $40 back in the early eighties. A very popular item at my grade school in Denver.

I loved & miss that jacket!! Mine was dark blue with a powder blue middle. I remember my dad buying me a "real" one and my mom had one with dark green sleeves and a tan middle. I also remember all the rich kids checking to see if mine was real or not by looking for the tag.

It was a must Skiing in Tahoe in the late 70's early 80's. I still have mine and won 2nd place at the Eldora Retro Days last year wearing it.

We have been married for 48 years. She is still a great skier, mountaineer, cyclist, canyoneer, mother of four, grandmother of seven, so I guess now it's Grandmother Karen. This weekend she is with her family and friends celebrating a milestone birthday.

I had a tan and yellow jacket. Felt pretty "hot" on Alta's slopes!

They also had a great annual coloring contest with a very cool blank illustration available at ski stores. I mailed one in every year, but never won. I also loved my navy blue powdershirt with green sleeves.

They were called "powder jackets", and if you didn't have one at Hillcrest High in the early eighties, you were a total dork.

I still have mine! The body and neck are navy blue and the sleeves are powder blue, I bought it in 1981 at Gorsuch Ski Shops in Vail, CO where I was working at the time. It was made so well that it still looks new.

Just came back from a vacation on Telluride and it made me remember my old powder jacket. I absolutely loved that thing. I couldn't remember who made it but knew it had the word Mother in it. It's fun to read others recollections. Bring back the powder jacket!!

Grew up in Tahoe. In the early 80's my brother and I and several friends all wore the same color, dark blue body with powder blue sleeves. Long live the Martin-Polaris gang!

I have a gray pair of knickers made for Nordic skiing. They are perfectly designed and constructed. I still wear them a half dozen days a year; have had them since new, bought at Dave Cook's in Denver in the 80's. Bought some new Toko ski pants a few years ago and took them back a couple days later. Maybe I can find a seamstress here in SLC to make me a duplicate pair. Had a pair of alpine bibs, too, that I wore until faded and threadbare. She was/is a genius!

Yes! 1981-1982 these were HUGE! I had one in 5 grade. Dark blue center with light blue sleeves. My friend had the dark blue center with the red sleeves. We would keep our King B Beef Jerky cans in the center pocket during school. God what great memories.

I started with the pullover, but that was cumbersome. For about 120 back in 82ish I upgraded to the full front zip. Dang I miss that jacket. It was lost when I moved to California. I'd be willing to pay 500 for a new one.

We had matching jackets and powder pants. The very best for Utah's slopes back in the day. Couldn't use them in Spokane because it's much colder skiing there. Would love to have that outfit back. Would love to be able to fit in it too!
