I'd change the year range from 1977 to 1989 or so but yeah, one of the defining styles of the 80s, with both long and short spikes worn. In the late 70s, only punks and other subcultures did it, and there were no mainstream products to help keep it up so you used soap or vintage hair grease or egg whites or toothpaste. By the mid-80s, there was a variety of products to help keep your spikes high and separated.

Mousse was enough for the more conservative, teased spike (along with the bi-level cut). If you were really daring, you added spray on tint in pink, purple, or green usually (the preppy colors).
