Description: Levi's 501s with an intentionally and drastically tapered leg. Properly, the hem was to be left cut allowing the much desired frayed effect.

Some people still wear them unfortunately. I can't believe we wore those. They are so not flattering on the figure!

Tapered jeans (and tapered pants in general) were the standard jeans shape in the 80s. The shape debuted in the late 70s and at first appeared to us like a throwback to women's pants shapes of the late 50s/early 60s. When these first came in in the late 70s, they were hard to find where I lived, since everyone still wore flares, like they had been since the late 60s. When I got my first pair in about 1979, my mother laughed: "It looks like you had to stretch the ankles to get them over your feet!"
