When we said "Polo shirt" in the early 80s, we only meant Ralph Lauren Polo shirts, with the insignia. I didn't know those short-sleeve, knit, front-placket shirts were called polo shirts until much later. Yeah, it was popular in the early 80s to wear them one on top of another with one of the collars turned up. I think the turned-up collar thing was supposed to evoke 1950s James Dean or something, but it really looked stupid on pastel knits. We had this style of shirt all through childhood in the 60s and 70s, without knowing it had a special name at all. In the early 80s, my favorite one was an oversized white one from the early 60s that had belonged to my father. I wore it with white or beige sailcloth shorts.

Us preppies always wore either Polo and Izod shirts with the collar up, of course.
