Description
Sex: female
Type of clothing:
When it was popular: 1984 - 1986
Description: Popular with younger kids, not sure about high schoolers. These were plastic link necklaces with plastic charms that would clip onto them. Girls used to trade charms with their friends. You could fit A LOT of charms on them because they clipped all along the plastic links. Most of the charms had little bells attached so you were sort of noisy walking around with them. Some of the charms had cool moving parts, like a plastic roller skate with moving wheels. They were really popular around 1985 or so. In sixth grade even my teacher had one!

We had those in high school. We would go to the flea market on Saturday's and buy as many charms as we could...usually 5 charms for $2 or something like that.

Funny, I am 29 and I just bought some off of ebay a few months ago. You would not believe how expensive these things can be. Now I have to buy more because my kids want some... lol They are also called "junk necklaces" or 1980's charm bracelets. Good luck

About a couple a months back I was talking to a friend about these. I couldn't remember the name, but knew what they had. With all the things they have today, I don't see why these can't make come back.

Mac - December 29, 2008 - Report this comment
Man...I wish I still had mine! I remember going to the grocery store w/ my dad on the weekends just to get my charms---they were in those little machines you stick a quarter in, twist the knob, and get the plastic egg w/ some cheap toy in it. I even had a plastic belt that you could put the charms on!
SHERRY - December 31, 2008 - Report this comment
Me and my friend loved those. It's been over 20 years since I had one probably. I remember in third grade it was a big deal to get more and more charms.
Tera - January 14, 2009 - Report this comment
Okay...Stupid question, but where did you get them as a kid? Like a store chain name? Etc. Thanks! :)
Angela - January 17, 2009 - Report this comment
WOW! What a blast from the past with these charm necklaces. I LOVED mine for a brief period...like 2nd and 3rd grade I think (I am 32 now, so that would have been roughly 1985). I bought mine at a gift shop called "Teddy Bears Too" (local) and at Hallmark card shop. They were kind of expensive for plastic, I never found them in quarter machines. The charms were at least a dollar. Love the pic someone posted...exactly like I remember the charms!

People from NJ called them Junk Necklaces/Charm Necklaces. I submitted one of my pictures for all to see. My favorite charms were the ABACUS, EGGS IN PAN, BMX HELMET, CONAIR PHONE & DIARY!!
Keith - April 16, 2009 - Report this comment
I had one as a guy! Collected until first grade was over. The girls loved me for it. HAHAHA In fact I still have the charm necklace in a cup in my room. Wore it to an 80s fanjam party the other day and again the girls were FLIPPING OUT! Has an frying pan with egg, a toothbrush...a bicycle....random things on it!

I have a bunch of these- maybe fifty or more. I also have several chains. My favourite charm (it's hard to choose just one!) is the headphones.
Rachel - May 19, 2009 - Report this comment
I had a ton of these. They were so popular with the kids in my class. I was born in 79 and we would trade each other for the ones that we wanted. Oddly enough my son(who is 7) came home with about 20 of these yesterday from school. He said a teacher gave them to him. I was so shocked and it brought back the good ole days.
blueyedevil - June 03, 2009 - Report this comment
I was thinking about my old charm necklace a couple weeks ago. I wish I knew where in my mother's garage I would have to look in order to find it. I had a black necklace with a ton of charms. I can't remember what ANY of them were, which makes me want to find it even more! Eggs in a pan sounds familiar tho!

Does anyone know about the 36" necklaces that you twisted together to make a necklace sorta like a choker only looser. I am wearing mine from 1985--it has about 12 separate 36" lengths of orange or black or gold beads twisted together and clasped with a hinged O. Each length is one color and you twist them together. Some women had lapis or other semi-precious stones but I just have beads. I get them out for Halloween and I love the look now that I have an old lady neck!

I soo remember the toilet with lifting lid...but I can't recall the name either. Does anyone know what they were called? There is a new version out now call Lucky BeeBee. Saw them in Toys R Us with my 7 yr old daughter who wants some!!! How funny.

Hahaha, my sister and I had these. I got pissed at her for something and destroyed her necklace by cutting up each chain link so there was no way you could fix it. What an evil little sister I was lmao! Love you Heath ;)

I still have several. Mine are color coordinated. Blue charms on blue chain, for example.I bought them just for fun, figuring out that maybe one day they may be worth something. I keep each one in its own large Ziploc baggie. I don't wear them; never did.

I definitely remember this necklace. The charm I remember the most (oddly) was a little glass bottle. The top came off and I use to put real water in it and drink it out of the bottle (lol) It's weird now that I think about it. I wish I still had mine too. I don't remember all the charms I had but I remember I had quite a few.

I would buy all the colors of each charm, since I was collecting all the colors available. I have 12 complete necklaces, all color coordinated, each in its owm large Ziploc baggie. I see how much these go for on Ebay and Etsy now, so they live in our safe. They have never been worn.

They were 2.50 a piece back in 1984. You put them on your keychain or clip them to your book bag.

I dug mine out, it has about 28 charms on the chain. My fave's are the micky mouse, transformer robot and robot cat, dancing elephant, train, sewing machine, puss in boot, clown with google eyes. I still love these bell charms, not parting with mine either, not yet. One day when I grow up my great niece will get them, that's if I ever grow up?

I have oodles of the original, vintage 1980's bell charms on my Etsy site. Yes, they cost more than they did in the 80's, but mine are more reasonable than other places I've seen them. I collect them with my daughter and sell the ones we get duplicates of. Full necklaces for sale too. Come check out the shop. squirrelawayvintage on Etsy.

We now use my charm necklaces as a garland for our Christmas tree. We just started doing this in 2016, and they look so good on the tree that we are making it a Christmas tradition at our house. At least it gets them out of the safe, and our tree has LED lights, si the plastic won't melt.

I have literally 100 plus charms and 5 or 6 necklaces for sale at the moment. Oogie Boogie is a large original maker of these and also there was another brand chains n charms (I believe) none are marked and even oogie boogie charms in the same box varied in size, color, weight, and other attributes. Making it hard to tell originally which company they came from. Quality of bell charms went from flimsy thin plastic with thin clips and rings to hold them together to very heavy duty plastic with larger sturdy hand clips and metal rings to connect the bells, charms, and clips. Charmsandthings80@gmail.com to inquire about charms and necklaces for sale.
