After "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" in '82, checkerboard Vans sales blew up. Everybody wore them; every company had knock-offs. Nice to see them in style again.

I had the pink and purple checkerboard vans and loved them!!! We were so poor, and all I wanted were a pair of Levi 501 button fly jeans and my pink and purple vans. When my parents finally gave in, I was the happiest kid in the world. That was over 20 years ago and I still remember the feelings of excitement. I treasured those Vans

I worked for Vans in Anaheim,Ca.from 1981-1984 at the height of their popularity. I worked as a quality control and warehouse supervisor. My favorite slip on was black and white checkered.I worked directly for James Van Doren Jr.

I worked for Van's, too, in the 80s. They were super cool and I thought it was a great high school job! I remember the Van Doren's and their big company picnics near the factory in Santa Ana. I can still remember the code #s, too! 98-19 = navy blue off the wall slip on! now I live in Korea and it's such a weird thing to see teens and 20somethings in Korea wearing VANS/1

That would have been so cool working for Vans in the 80s. Great story, bro! I raced BMX all over the east coast from 83 to 87, and I know I easily wore out 25 pairs of Vans in that same time frame. My parents and sponsor were not to happy with me requesting a new pair every 3 or 4 weeks... Ha! I am now in my 30s and getting ready to buy my first pair of Vans (authentic, of course!) in like 20 years! Timeless classics!

Born and raised in Anaheim. I would special order vans in all kinds of color combos from the store on Broadway. Love them.

I got my pair on my 10th bday, after begging mum to get me a pair of the black/chequered vans back in 1982 they were $50, I remember how much I liked these shoes, I'm now 39 and I'm looking at getting a pair again.

I'm 42 and have some photos of me racing BMX in the early 80's with a slip-on pair with colored polka dots on them. We called them Wonder Bread Vans. Wish I could find another pair of those...

I'm a 47 yr old female & have been wearing Vans since 1986. Best non-athletic tennis shoes ever made. An American success story. Over the years they began to be made in China, I contacted Vans in Cali & they hooked me up with several styles that were still made in America. I've bought myself a new pair of Vans almost every summer for close to 30 years. Even have suede Van boots. Classic off white tie still my favorite. Thanks Vans, for being a fun slice of America!!

Hey all! I'm 44 and was a skater as a young girl! I still have my very 1st pair of Vans from 1984 and yes I still wear them! I worked hard to pay for them the summer before freshman year! They are black! Maybe not perfect now but dang those shoes are made to last! Looking for a pair alike like them so I can salvage my now not everyday ones!
