Description
Sort of a taco hamburger at Taco Bell. They used ground beef instead of an actual hamburger patty. It was on a hamburger bun with shredded cheese, lettuce, etc. They were great. From Early 80's to mid to late 80's.

Kind of unmessy sloppy Joe. I hear that 1 or 2 Taco Bells in East Los Angeles still make them.

Actually the BellBeefer was around since the 1960's. California Taco Bells' originally called it the "Chili Burger", then it was known as the "Bell Burger" and finally "BellBeefer". When I was a kid in the 60's and early 70's, this was my favorite Taco bell item. Was sad when it disappeared (At least in the Northwest)sometime in the mid '80's.

Oh yeah...this was awesome. Also they had the ORIGINAL Enchirito. The one they have now is NOT hte same. The original was an actual CORN tortilla with a thin layer of beans, a lot of taco meat, onions & cheese topped with red sauce, more cheese and black olives. The Burrito Supreme used to have black olives too. DAMN YOU TACO BELL!

Yes, as a kid in the 60's I remember them as Bell Burgers. My god they were good better than anything on their menu before or since. They need to bring them back but you have idiots running these large companies now they are not small ownerships anymore.

I enjoyed these in NE Ohio during most of the 80's...Surprisingly, no matter who I ask, and I've asked many people over the years...(including family members who bought them for me) they say I'm crazy. Never heard of them. Thankfully, I found this site and proved my sanity.

Nothing but a glorified Mexican Sloppy-Joe. In 1979 my friend ordered BellBeefers one night; I thought,"what a waste... we came to Taco Bell to get Tacos! Nachos! Burritos! and he gets two bellbeefers." And I think he was finicky too; no lettuce or tomato, just beef and cheese.

OMG...Thanks to this website I can get off my meds. I thought I was going crazy when no one knew what I was talking about. I remember the bellbeefer so well when I was a kid in Cali. We lived across the street from Taco Bell and I used to get it with sour cream and cheese. THE BEST!!

You can still get something near-identical at a chain called Taco John's (mostly in the midwest and the Rockies, with a few I think closer to the coast). It's called the Taco Burger, and it's just taco meat, lettuce, and hot sauce on a bun. The beef and the sauce are a little different from Taco Bell's, but they're very close. I highly recommend it.

in our town we have a Taco Bell / KFC that are the same drive thru restaurant. I wonder if they would just put the taco meat on one of the KFC buns?

I loved these when I was a kid growing up in California. People think I'm crazy when I tell them that it was an actual item on the menu back in the 80's. They always take away the good stuff!

From about the mid-1960's through the mid-1970's Taco Bell made a Sloppy Joe like sandwich called the "Bell-Burger". It used the same flavored ground beef mixture as a crunchy taco, along with a sauce similar to Mild Border Sauce and shredded mild cheddar cheese. This was served on a hamburger bun that had been steamed slightly to soften and warm it. The "Bell Burger" was just seasoned loose meat, sauce and shredded cheese on a steamed bun. This is not the "Bell Beefer", which came a few years later from the mid-1970's through the mid -1990's. The regular "Bell Beefer" had seasoned loose meat, sauce, onions and lettuce on a bun; the "Bell Beefer Supreme" also had tomatoes and cheese. Through a Google search, I find the term "Bell Beefer" from 1974 in the Wall Street Journal, through 1994 in various Diet Calorie Guides. So its run may be a year or two on either side of those dates. I did a search on the Google newspaper archive. The Bell Beefer was described as follows: The Sun newspaper- Apr 18, 1982 "The regular Bell Beefer (89 cents) is meat, sauce, onions and lettuce on a roll that falls apart when lifted; the Bell Beefer Supreme ($1.09) also has tomatoes and cheese." -To make a "Bell Burger" add loose meat, grated cheese and mild border sauce. -To make a "Bell Beefer" add loose meat, diced onions, shredded lettuce and mild border sauce. -To make a "Bell Beefer Supreme" add loose meat, diced onions, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, grated cheese and mild border sauce.

I worked at a Taco Bell in 1979-1980. My coworkers and I all hated the Bellbeefer the most! It was a pain to make! I did not lament its departure one bit!

You can get those at del taco, they aren't on the menu but if you order a bun taco they will make them an charge you $2.00 each. Use their mild sauce and they are really good.
Papa - December 05, 2015 - Report this comment
You can make them now at home, pretty easy. Taco Bell meat seasoning and mild sauce are readily available at the grocery store. And make sure you use the large buns, like they did in the mid-70's.

BellBurgers and Enchiritos. Oh to have those days working at TC back. I worked at Taco Bell in the late 70s and remember going out to the Disco after we closed. I was a member of Taco Bell Unit #586 in Los Angeles on Beverly Blvd. Those were the days. And the sauces Spiled or Micey. I remember making up some killer BellBurger at mealtime. They were the best thing on the menu.
