Description
Big Mouth's were a HUGE jaw breaker on a stick. In the middle there was gum. I think you either had to break it or suck on it for days to get to the gum and every layer was a different color.

Hi! Around 1974 or so, there was a gum called 'Big Mouth' bubble gum. It was the size of a playing card, but at least a 1/2 inch thick and came in bubble gum, grape, and cherry flavors. I don't know anything about a jaw breaker, but if there was one in the 80's, they stole the name. I know a lot about this gum because I was around 10 or so and I would buy 3 each week with my 25 cent allowance. I also ended up being rushed to the hospital twice because of horrible stomach aches from the gum. Just thought you'd like to know. BTW - I grew up in Michigan in case the gum was only in the central or eastern area. Thanks, Carolynn

I don't know what possessed me to go out and look for "Big Mouth" gum, but I remember exactly what you've described. I am also from the Wayne County MI area, and will never forget the big slab of gum! We'd occasionally mix it with "Zots" fizzy hard candy for an odd twist to. I don't remember Big Mouth gum being around in the 80's, but I definitely remember it in the 70's. And if I remember correctly, the packaging had a large yellow smiley face on the top/front.

These were the best suckers in the world! I used to get them using my paper route money back in the 80s. The sucker itself was SO good (especially the red ones) and the gum in the middle was good as well.

I LOVED the BIG MOUTH suckers. There were so many layers to lick through that my mouth would get sore and it would take a few days to get to the center. My brother and I would get these from the drugstore next to the music shop where my sister took flute lessons. Ah, great memories. I wish they still made them. The flavor was great!

Like the rest of you I remember the slab of gum back in the 70's. If you chewed the whole thing it filled up your mouth. I'm also from Grand Rapids Michigan.

I have been on a quest for Big Mouth Suckers for years. I saw them on a trip to Canada in 1995. I bought as many as I could find. I think they were made by Leaf candy company. If anyone knows a source PLEASE post! BigMouthFreund!

In the early 70's I used to get a big mouth lollipop at a pool club I used to belong to. Me and my friend jennifer would rush to the swing set there and knock the lollipos on the medal poles trying to crack them so we could get to the gum. It would take us at least 3 days to get to the middle. When you started it up the following day it was totally chalkie and dry until you started licking again.

Topps made the Big Mouth and they were available up till about 1996 1997 I know cause I craved them when I was pregnant. The gum was so great cuz it was the same gum in Baseball cards.

I haven't seen bigmouth bubblegum since the 70's. I do remember it because it was about 2" X 3" X 1/2". It was a huge piece of gum. I mostly remember it because I was chewing grape and lost a filling.
Dennise - February 19, 2009 - Report this comment
I was in Northern California when bigmouth gum came on the seen. Our Jr. Highr school was right across the street from some candy machines that had the gum in it. I remember sneaking across the street and purchasing my share. I remember there being grape, apple, cherry. Those were the good ole days.

Big mouth suckers were the best lollipop ever created. i have similar sentiments to those listed above. the closest sucker i have found to a big mouth is the Paintball Pop which is at espeezcandy.com. got one in a gas station in ohio and it tastes similar to a big mouth but does not have gum. please post if anyone knows how to get bigmouth sucker.

Yes, I so remember these Big Mouth Suckers....and I do have 2 of them tucked away for just keep sakes, I've taken them out and my kids are asking "why do you have them and if your not going to eat them can we?" NOPE!! but I have the address on the back of the wrapper I'm pretty sure they were made by "Topps" I wish the company would go looking in their vault and get the recipe back out and make them, I know my kids would love to have some....

Good News folks! I'm eating one right now! I picked it up at a gas station in Kansas. I also saw them a a gas station in colorado. They are called Jawlipops and they are actually 3 times the size of the Big Mouth Suckers. Big Mouth only came in Red, Pink, and purple. I saw Red, Pink, yellow, and blue. They have a gum center and they change colors. So far, mine started out red, turned yellow, and is now blue. Jawlipops. They taste the same!

My brother and I are sitting here cracking up reading the stories. We Loved Big Mouth Gum. We only remember the Apple and Grape...wish we remembered Cherry. I remember its consistency like a drier denser bubbs daddy only in a big slab form. Is this turning out to be a Michigan local thing? We're from Midland. Who Made it? Why is it gone. We want it back. Didnt taste like the baseball card stale chalky bubblegum to me at all. Bring back the Big Mouth. my kids want some.
beachfeet1971 - January 27, 2010 - Report this comment
WOW! I am happily surprised to see as many people wanting these back as I do!!! I loved the red the best and loved when they got chalky after a few hours of not being licked. I can remember how good they smelled. My brother actually got one stuck between his cheek and teeth...I can't remember how my parents got it out. Wish I had one now.

The best memory that I have from "Big mouth" was trying to bite it when it still had half the way to be finished looking for the gum. I have a jaw cracked for that for the rest of my life.. hehehe. I know now why they call them "jawbreakers". I think Wonka.com used to make them, but I´m quite not sure. They used to taste as the Gobstoppers.

Cracker Barrell sells Jawlipops for $2.99. They are similar and taste the same to me. They are all the same flavor but have different colors on the outside layer. It takes 30 days to make one! You can order them online if you don't have a Cracker barrel near you. Just check out their site.

I LOVE THOSE SUCKERS!!! I miss them so much. They were made by Topps. My friend and I used to ride our bikes to the Jiffy Store and buy them. The closest thing that I have found was a few years ago around Valentine's Day Walmart had some suckers that tasted just like them and had the gum inside but they weren't as big. I think they were called Cupid Pops. Anyway, they don't even have those anymore. :( I think I will petition Topps to bring them back! Who's with me?

I would sneak a piece now and then as I was around 10 years old and had braces, we moved, braces were removed and then couldn't find the gum!!! I had lived North west of Chicago at the time. Did topps make them? Never heard of the suckers though. If anyone knows where you can get this gum please let me know! 4kicks@rr1.net

I was raised on the Navajo Reservation in the early to late 70's and I remember the big slab of gum called "Big Mouth". It was the size of a playing card and about as wide as a half deck of cards! IT took a few minutes (jaws would be sore and tired for some of the weak!) to chew and break down the sugars into something blowable. I would love to see a photo of this gum pack. I believe it came in Sour Apple(my fave), Grape, and Cherry. Post a pic on Google so it can be found while searching in the Bubblegum images search.

Growing up in the 80's these suckers were a must have at the convenient stores and the fish camps. My favorite was the pink, but I loved all 3. Perhaps since we all loved them so much and know they were made by Leaf, we could petition them to reintroduce them? Couldn't hurt

Funny I was looking for the gum for my nephews birthday and because it was a favorite of mine when I was little and I read the first comment left. The comment made me remember the stories of my mothers horror of my having to go to the hospital for another reason and they had to pump my stomach and they couldn't get anything out. When they X-rayed me it showed clumps of gum stuck to the walls of the stomach. My mother was so embarrassed she had to tell the Doctor how I would eat gum. .... It was yummy... at the time I was as skinny ..hmmmm,

I have been looking four BIG MOUTH bubblegum too! Started buying it at the corner convenience store back in 1972 for sure. This gum was NOT inside a sucker. That came years later. I remember the company rolled out a narrower version of the same name about 2-3 years later. Definitely a SLAB of gum in a wrapper. Anyway, I had a big WALLET SIZE SLAB in my back pocket all the time! It was COOL back then! They came in regular fruit, apple and grape, with the crazy cards inside with deformed over-size characters riding souped-up cars, dune-buggys and motorcycles. I remember the one called MOTO-GUZZI on a motorcycle!!! My friends and I would bust up laughing when we shared cards with a GIANT was of gum in our mouths!! Those were the days!! Haha!! 1971-1975
