Description
Came in sticks 4 inches long in a black package with a pistol packing outlaw wearing a handkercheif over his face ( Black Bart ) They were like the Bazooka Joe full 4 inch gum sticks that were sugary for 10 chews then the flavor ran out. I remember they really stuck to the teeth ! 10 cents each

Haven't seen this in years, but I was addicted to it as a kid. It had a pungent licorice flavour and would stain your tongue a very dark blue. Mostly I remember the "hard" quality of the stick; my jaw is sore just thinking about chewing Black Bart!

I looovvved Black Bart Bubblegum! You could blow the best bubbles with it and it left the yummiest black licorice flavor in my mouth...I think it would be just great to find some again!

I remeber chewing Black Bart and then sticking it over our teeth. It would make you look like you had your teeth knocked out. Fooled my mom a couple of times.

I loved Black Bart gum too, but I don't think anyone makes it anymore. However, I have bought Black Jack gum, and it's the closest substitute you'll find. I bought it at a British Store, but they don't sell it anymore either. But, I see that Amazon sells it, and it's almost identical in taste, but softer.

Man Oh Man, I would love a chew of Black Bart now. I remember growing up in Newfoundland and putting a small piece of Black Bart over one tooth. It looked like I had a tooth missing.....Loved it!!!!!

Wow! There ARE people like me who remember this great gum. I would buy it all the time. It really made great bubbles even though it was a tough chew. Most people i talk to don't remember Black Bart but it was my favorite. I would pay stupid money for an opportunity to chew Black Bart again. Does anyone recall which candy company made it? If the company is still around perhaps they can be contacted and they might make us up a batch for old times sake. I would love to know where i can buy it if it still exists. P.S. I tried Black Jack gum and it is not the same as Black Bart. Its similar but definitely not as good as the real deal.

black bart gum... was an integral part of my childhood. Sadly, our entire canadian nation is at a huge loss as it appears this gum cannot be found anywhere. I'll bet the last person to chew the last piece of black bart didnt even know it. So sad! Black bart, you will be missed.

I loved this stuff as well. I'm wondering if it was just in Newfoundland or what. I also really loved 'chunks'. I remember these coming in plain, nutty and later caramel. Does anyone remember these?
Gail Garnier Corcoran - October 23, 2010 - Report this comment
I remember Chunks Diana! it would be a daily ritual fir me and my friends to grab a few of them along with Black Bart gum I used to adore the peanut chunks until they came out with the caramel ones lol I too used to live in Newfoundland and these candies used to be distributed everywhere, seems like the good things we remember as kids are gone.. can anyone remember gold nuggets bubble gum? it came in a little sack with a drawstring? how about edible paper candy? or Kojak lollipops?

I have been trying to find Black Bart gum everywhere with no luck.I do remember gold nuggets they were a fav of mine also the edible paper candy. It's funny because I was just mentioning the paper candy to my boyfriend to see if he remembered it but I think it was only in Newfoundland that you could get it.I have also been searching for babybats suckers which were also a favorite.Chunks were an everyday thing for me.I think they still make them but they are so tiny and don't taste the same.

I loved this gum so much! I remember as a kid going to the "Green Store"(not it's actual name but that's what we called it) after swimming and buying loads of this gum. There was also this gum that came in the shape of a hamburger in its own little plastic container. I think it was made by Bubble King or something like that. Loved that gum too!!

Oh how I loved Black Bart. Just thinking of the taste takes me back to a time when life was simple, empty pop bottles got you enough money to buy a whack of candy.. jawbreakers, pixie stix, Chunks, frozen Lola's, Sarasota and Wink pop... but the best of all were those sticks of rock hard Black Bart. So much sugar that it had a bit of a grit to it but oh damn was it ever fabulous. Wish I could go back in time. *sigh*

Loved Black Bart growing up in my north end Halifax neighbourhood! Used to cut through the alley way across the street from my house in a flash to our neighbourhood store to buy Black Bart. 10 sticks for a buck! It was the best ten cent gum, and it's a great childhood memory! Long live Black Bart!

Interesting package. Found image of Black Bart licorice flavored gum. Made in Toronto by the Leaf (probably Maple Leaf) Corporation. A boy in cowboy hat and black kerchief pictured. Text is in English and French.
