Target's Market Pantry Nutrition Bars (Fudge Graham) is very reminiscent of them. I still wish they'd bring the old ones back. Everything suddenly went "CHEWY!" in the late 80s/early 90s and then they changed the recipe. If it's the little crunch with the chew that you miss, Target's is pretty close the target.
elle - February 13, 2009 - Report this comment
My Uncle used to feed me these when I was little. I liked the almost chalky texture they had. I'll have to try the Target ones.

I am sick over the Carnation company discontinuing these bars. They were the bomb! I feel it had to do with the "FAT CRAZE" which is over now. Please bring them back. Not all of us are fat.

This is so amazing to find so many people lusting after the Carnation Instant Breakfast Bars. I, too used to eat them in high school in the 80's. It was the only thing that I looked forward to in the morning. I would one with a cup of tea. I think I had one for a snack after school, too. I was very slim and always dieting. My mom swears that for years I lived off those "funny" bars. I just started thinking about them recently and have searched the supermarket aisles to no avail. So I finally decided to go online and see if there was any info out there. Then I find all of you! I have tried so many of the other nutrition bars out there and nothing can compare. Someone hit the nail on the head in describing the "chalky" texture. Oh, the powers that be at Carnation, if you are listening, please bring these back, the original recipe, chocolate chip, minus the trans fat (which I'm sure they had).

Same as Karen, I cant believe there are so many of us craving this bar. If anyone knows how to forward all these comments to Carnation please do!! Maybe they would start making the "Carnation Instant Breakfast Bar" again!!

PLEASE bring them back - especially the chocolate chip, and the peaNut butter and chocolate chip flavor. They were such a treat. Nestle bought the Carnation brand in 1985 - and the rest of Canation Instant Breakfast Bars are now history...If anyone from Nestle out there is listening - please there is a market out there craving for them!!!

These used to be my favorite lunch in jr. high. I would have a peanut butter choc. chip bar every day with a choc. shake. I hadn't thought about these for years until I linked back up with some jr. high friends online and was heartbroken when I discovered they discontinued them. They were my favorite breakfast bar of all time! I hope Carnation gets enough push to bring them back.

Please bring these back!I think they were produced in the early 90's as I recall eating them on the run as a flight attendant. They reaaly helped me keep my weight under comtrol. The chocolate chip were the best!

I would seriously pay like $50 for ONE bar now. Loved them.
Ryan P - October 23, 2009 - Report this comment
YES! I can't believe other folks like / remember them too! I loved the 80's Carnation Instant breakfast bar. They were SOOOO GOOD. They came in a nice yellow wrapper (for that time) which was foil based to seal in all the goodness. I have been searching for years to find something similar, and compare all breakfast type bars to it (carnation breakfast bar circa 1980's should be the highest achievable standard as far as taste goes) - the chocolate chip, crunchy inside was sooo good. I can see it and almost taste it right now. I too would pay good $$$ to get my hands on one. COME ON NESTLE - BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL RECIPE!!! IMAGINE THE MARKETING CAMPAIGN SUCCESS as buyers new and **old** curiously shop for the bar that so many want back on the shelf!
Okat - November 04, 2009 - Report this comment
My brother and I always talk about how much we miss Carnations Breakfast Bars and finally decided to look it up and was shocked to see how many of us want them back, it's really cool to see. I hope they do come back, can't get the taste out of my head.

I love reading the comments from others who also LOVED the bar! Especially the one about single serving bar or box? My neighbor and I have found the Classic Zone perfect bar by Abbott Nutrition to be a "close" match BUT let me be clear NOT the same thing. Come on Nestle make it happen bring back the bars!!!

Holy crap...I thought I was the only one! I lived on these things--they were the perfect "energy bar" before energy bars were cool! I was a runner and could eat anything back then! If only Carnation would bring them back! The Quaker Oat "dips" chocolate chip granola bar, comes close--but then they're chewy :(

I agree with everyone here. Carnation really should get their head out of their you know what and get the best breakfast bar ever back on the shelves. Some time ago I sent a letter to the Carnation Corporate office regarding these bars and received a reply. From what I remember they said demand for the bars were down and that is why they pulled the plug. I've had almost every other bar out there and nothing compares...not even close. This is just another example of Corporate stupidity.

i googled CIBB hoping to find a source for buying them . . . i guess i'm not surprised to find them gone. every other decent thing in my life has been taken from me, why not the instant breakfast bar too?? ok, that's a bit extreme, but man i'd love to find these again. i even remember the commercials, with the race car driver making a pit stop just to eat his breakfast bar. how could you discontinue something so awesome as the CIBB??? please bring it back.

OMG! I can't believe it too! Me and my sister were reminiscing about these bars! I lived on them as a kid and never was fat! LOL! They are better than the healthy versions out today....It's like they had a fake chocolate taste, yet they were so delicious! We would steal them out of the cabinet so much my mom started hiding from them from us.LOL. PLEASE BRING THEM BACK CARNATION!

I grew up on these in the 70's. Had two working parents and every morning was out the door with that little bright yellow wrapper with the foil inside. I would sneak them after school, they were so good!!! I hated to see them go and nothing on the market even comes close. My kids love breakfast bars and would eat these up (as would I). Come on Nestle, bring these back and make pots of money!!

LOVED CIBB's! They got me through law school in the early 90's. Ate one every day. They were the BOMB! I have never found anything that compares and I have tried almost all the bars out there - most protein bars have a nasty aftertaste CIBB's were the best.

Dear "Carnation" - As CEO of Carnation, I am pretty sure you would know how to write a grammatically correct sentence and also know how to spell the word 'supermarket.' Love, SZA
Carnation - September 27, 2010 - Report this comment
Dear SZA, You are without a doubt obtuse in every mental aspect of your meaningless life. Perhaps your mother dropped you on your head when she wasn't busy making a living performing on the oral circuit. The term was used in a literary sense depicting a double meaning. "Super Market" was a famous thesis project at the Harvard GSD with advisor Mark Mulligan. Its site is the Hudson Rail Yards in Manhattan, NY. The project explores the feasibility of introducing Big Box retail into Manhattan. It examines the nature and juxtaposition of the artificial and constructed ground and attempts to forge a new typology that responds to both ecologic and economic vernacular types. Not that you could comprehend any of this. Today's CEOs and students of marketing write on the Dutch Mill web page. In fact, we will now not consider bringing back this breakfast bar. You have proven why it is no longer in consideration.
SZA - September 28, 2010 - Report this comment
Dear Carnation: So is your real name Marke Johnson or do you just have a knack for cutting & pasting from the 'Net's vast resource bucket? Aww, so cute. Have you ever heard of Wikipedia, by chance? Another fine web-based research tool! http://vimeo.com/2542479

I once called them and BEGGED them to produce these again. The original ones. I remember biting a chunk and then filling my mouth with milk, and chewing them together. HEAVEN. I think they changed the formula in the late 80's and they tanked (like New Coke), but they ditched the product instead of returning to the original recipe.
heh - October 02, 2010 - Report this comment
Dear Carnation - Since Carnation was bought by Nestle, I don't think it has a CEO anymore. Love how SZA spanked you too! On to a real story, we are currently in talks to purchase the rights to recreate this product. More to follow if we're successful.

This was my breakfast all through my high school years and for years after that. Then they went away. Like many of you I have searched for a replacement but nothing has ever compared to the original Carnation Breakfast Bar. Chocolate Chip was my favorite. Now in my late 40's, I spend an hour + commute time each morning and this would be the perfect on the road breakfast to enjoy in the car to get me ready for the day. I have had to settle for the drink mix but it is just not the same as the bars.

my memory of these is that there weren't flavors of carnation instant breakfast bars at first, or at least my grocery didn't have different ones. They were chocolate flavored only. Funny how there's alot of comments about liking the peanut butter or the chocolate chip ones, I only liked the chocolate ones, when they started doing different flavors I didn't like them anymore. I've never been able to find anything close but the texture of the plain chocolate ones can be found in an oatmeal cookie made by Petri Baking Products (Silver Creek, NY) under the name "Bakery Fresh"

Wow, I was just having a trip down memory lane, remembering buying those bars and drinking coffee during Breakfast in high school (our high school actually had Breakfast, and you could go if you were free during the first two periods). But I found a bar that is so good it's a close second - try the Supreme Protein Peanut Butter Crunch bars. I myself remember and love these bars from the 80s. I just wanted to pass this along to those who may be interested... I recently started a low-carb diet and bought a ton of Atkins bars. I just opened a Peanut Fudge Granola Bar, and with the first bite, I immediately thought of the peanut butter and granola Carnation Breakfast Bar I have been longing for! I love seeing that so many people loved the breakfast bar. I first started eating them in 1st grade at breakfast at grade school. Then when I was a senior in High School my dad always bought me three or four boxes and i just kept them in my room to snack on. I always look to see if they are back on the shelves at the grocery store but, no, they are never there. What would it take to get Carnation to make them again? I am a 40 yr old woman and would love to have them to snack on. They were so good and I cannot find anything that compares. Carnation, please bring them back.

Woke out of an awesome dream this morning about the CIBB. I dreamt of walking down the isle of an old 80's grocery store. When suddenly there on one of the shelfs, what to my wondering eyes did appear, but the delicious yellow box of CIBBs from that year. YUM! Then I woke up. First thing to hit my mind was the old "Car-na-tion In-stant Break-fast..." jingle in my head. I then had a thought to search online this morning for something similar. I too longily crave the "chalky" texture coated in chocolate with the yellow "paper-like" wrapper. I'd love to see them back on the shelfs in real life. Man! Please bring them back.

I've been waiting for years for these to come back. Like everyone else, no replacement. The interesting thing is there are 100's of other "Bars" and not one of them have blogs dedicated to them. If Carnation were smart, they would parlay a story about the demand on the web and do a re-launch. Buttt.... they will just introduce another yogurt infused chocko nut fiber protein shake bar that tastes like crap and gets discontinued.......

How funny! I JUST finished eating one of the Quaker "dip" granola bars and started thinking about the ol' Carnation Breakfast Bars and how much I miss them. As someone earlier said, the Quaker "dip" bars (chocolate chip) are "similar" but chewey. I, too, miss the "chalky" texture of those old bars and what I wouldn't give to get my hands on one again! I was addicted!! Come on, Carnation - bring'em back!

This is a great idea, Pettion person. Please send them a post from me. Love to have them back. How do we get in touch with them?

Weight watchers has a mini snack bar called the chocolate pretzel blast and it reminds me of the chocolate slender bars from carnation back in the day when I was a kid. My mom used to eat them and she would hide them on the top shelf in the kitchen from us kids. We would bet on each other's shoulders and reach up to the bar and stand on the bar to get to the top cabinets to see if there were any hiding in there. I loved every little round nugget of deliciousness. My favorite was the vanilla.

The Carnation Breakfast Bars (chocolate chip) were my favorite snake in the late 70s/early 80s. Nestle could make a fortune if they would bring them back. I had written to Nestle a few years ago inquiring about the breakfast bars. I received a reply indicating that they were promoting their (Nestle's products) and for that reason, had discontinued the majority of the Carnation brand. Nestle should at least provide the recipe to the breakfast bar fans so we can at least make our own.

Hi Everyone! I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but these bars will never see the light of day again. I worked for Nestle a few years ago in the Marketing Department. I worked for the guy who made the final decision to discontinue the Carnation Instant Breakfast Bars in the first place. During a meeting one day, he admitted that getting rid of these bars was his biggest career regret, but that the company has moved on and will not entertain the notion of re-introducing this product. As a consumer who used to LOVE these bars as a kid, I was heartbroken. I really don't understand his reasoning because Carnation Instant Breakfast is one of the company's most important brands and the drink mix and shakes are great products. The bars category is growing and Nestle still has the formula for the bars. Go figure. Those guys make a lot a crazy decisions. Just wanted to let you know that the prospect of resurrecting these awesome bars doesn't look promising.

I have thought about Carnation breakfast bars for years and tried nearly every bar out there. NOTHING compares in my opinion! As a kid in the 80's, I ate these for breakfast and as an after school snack. I sure wish Carnation would bring them back and I'm elated that so many others feel the same!

These were great. Carnation also did a six-in-a-pack called just "'Slender Bars"' in three flavours..Chocolate, Coffee and the best of all..Peppermint!! The mint flavour was gorgeous and high in protein. This was around 1980-1982.

These were so good! I have been craving them for years..as a kid they were the only thing I could eat in the morning without getting nauseous...maybe some other company could produce them since Carnation doesn't seem to be budging.

Is the jury still out, or has someone tried the "new" Breakfast Essentials Bar? Please share your thoughts.

Someone came out with a study saying Americans like sweet. Now all you can find are horribly sweet snack/breakfast bars and tastes like cardboard breakfast bars. I no longer am a customer of the breakfast bar and snack bar industry because they all suck.

Here I am, leaving a comment on a message board years and years old, but I miss these bars! I grew up eating them for breakfast before I went to school. My mom never let me have more than two. Now I'm 38 and if I could get my hands on those Slender Bars -- the chocolate ones -- I would eat as many as my heart desired. I loved those things! Nothing I've ever had since has compared to them. Every now and then, something will stir those memories and I can almost taste them on my tongue.

Hey Leigh! Looks like we were both hit with nostalgia on the same day. I would seriously pay $100 to have the opportunity to enjoy one more vanilla slender bar or chocolate chip instant breakfast bar. It makes no sense why they wouldn’t bring these back when there’s no other bar that has that wonderful texture we crave. Most bars are just chewy mush. 😢
