Description
These actually belong to the lemon heads and Alexander the Grape family but deserve special mention because they are the only ones no longer available. The racist, stereotypical Chinese charicature depicted on the front of the box wasn't politically correct enough for the 90's.

They still make these only now they are called "Cherry Heads" with a cherry farmer on the box.
Supertron500 - August 06, 2008 - Report this comment
It's too bad the box art's changed, i like it the way it used to look. Packages/ wrappers/ boxes are so cheap and boring and lack detail these days, and Cherry Heads (Cherry Clans) are no exception.

I remember these. I swear they had a "fortune" inside that would say something idiotic like "Don't cry over spilled milk, let the cat lick it up."

These were also around in the 70s, i think that's also when they came out. The only difference the 70s box had from the 80s version was it was called Cherry Chan and the box had a picture of an asian guy who kinda looked like Mr. Chan from the "The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan" cartoon: http://www.seanstarwars.com/save4webpics/cx_cherrychan2.jpg

Cherry Clan and Alexander the Grape? Brings back some fond memories of the 80's. Ferrara Pan changed the flavor when they changed the brand. Also, the old style Push Pops, they just don't make candy like that any more.

Ahh yes. Because of Political Correctness, we no longer have Cherry Clans. Did they offend Asians?! LOL I'm Asian, and I liked cherry clans! They were awesome. Now they are just Cherry heads. BORING!

Cherry Clans can be seen on the register counter of Monk's Cafe in several episodes of the TV show Seinfeld

My first and only box of these came from the bakery a few blocks away when I was growing up - they had a candy counter off to the side. They were so tart my sister scrunched up the side of her face when I gave her one.

Bring them back! Get over it people, they're not racist.. Cherry Heads don't come close.
Kris - November 03, 2010 - Report this comment
@Oops YES, They did have a fortune in them and you are exactly right on that fortune. I remember that one. :-)

Prior to Cherry Clans, they made Cherry Chan but had to remove it for the same racist stereotypical reasons. That pic depicted one Asian insipired character with a mustache etc.
Kenice - January 17, 2013 - Report this comment
They taste different from the cherry heads...they arent the same!!!!
Charlie - January 03, 2014 - Report this comment
Yes Brian! I always notice that

i just saw these on an episode of Seinfeld (where Elaine orders a 'big salad', which George's gf takes 'credit' for). They were on the counter of the restaurant. I'd never seen them before. Breathtakingly Politically Incorrect!

Look at the pic? Does it say racial slurs? Do it even say chinese? Is racist to draw non white races? There is nothing racist about the candy. We called them chinese cherries when we were young. This oversensitive pc crap is a control method. It is now racist to say mexican or chinese food. Its bs political control over people, dont buy into it. Love the candy and miss the old box!

I just had a dream about this candy and trying to buy some again. I woke up at 7 and started some googling and come to find out my suspicions are correct... The F$&@ing! PC police took my candy!!!!! Political correctness is intellectual tyranny. If it was so offensive people wouldn't have bought them and it would have been discontinued for lack of interest. F..ing bleeding heart liberals have to make sure nobody gets their feelings hurt. Lame! I miss the 80's and Cherry Clan! RIP

Just saw the "Big Salad" episode of Seinfeld (1994) with Cherry Clans on the counter at Monk's! Forever immortalized on reruns...BTW George sure was a cheap bastard!
mellokitty - February 05, 2015 - Report this comment
"Big Salad" episode on! I've seen this episode a million times but never knew what Cherry Clans were before finding this site. Maybe an East coast thing?
Patrick - March 22, 2015 - Report this comment
I just saw the big salad Seinfeld episode two. Cherry clans are in the background LOL. Brings back a lot of memories. I dislike the reason they changed the name but in my opinion the more important issue is they changed the flavor. Cherryheads don't taste the same. Bring back the original recipe!

I remember these from the 80s. I don't remember having them more than once, but my family didn't eat sweats much. My best bud thought they were fantastic. I'm not surprised they were pulled from the market considering the packaging. P.S. Yah, it is the Seinfeld episode on Crackle now that reminded me of this one from like 30 years ago.

This was a great candy. Forgot about them until I just saw the Seinfeld episode the big salad! Bring them back :)

They are the best candy ever. I remember getting them from the Ice Cream Man as a kid. I agree about the boring packaging but I'm just glad they continued to make the candy! We all have a head right that can't be offensive...right?

I absolutely love these. How anyone finds the packaging racist is absolutely ridicurous.
