For decades, all-meat wieners were composed of chicken and pork. Toward the 1980s, weight-conscious consumers wanted leaner franks, also as alternative to expensive beef products. Old-school meatpackers like Oscar Mayer and Armour began selling all-turkey and all-chicken wieners. Turkey proved more popular (and tastier) than chicken. In the 1990s and beyond, the pork and beef producers fought back with advertising denouncing claims that each product had much higher calories than chicken or turkey. After some resolution, the next step was to offer products with reduced fat and sodium.
