My brother and I used to buy these cookies, sneak them upstairs through the laundry shoot and sit and eat them by ourselves. I too look for them everywhere but if they brought them back I'd want them the same without anything "health" conscious brought into them because that's what made them sooo good!

Vienna Fingers are sort of close BUT .... not nearly as satisfying as the apparently discontinued Cup Custard cookies by Nabisco. It reminds me of another product, Krumbles (from Kellogg's), that was discontinued a long time ago. I loved both products ..... I really think Kellogg's could get some mileage (and profits) from bringing back some "retro" products. It might make some marketing person a hero but, unfortunately, I don't see a lot of creativity on that end these days.

I look down the cookie aisle all the time whenever I go shopping but haven't seen them probably since the '70s. They were my absolute favorite. For those who've looked for these cookies at other websites that say they were made by Sunshine Bakery that's since then been taken over by Keebler, well, I wrote Keebler and the person who answered me said that "they" (may've said Sunshine specifically, may've been referring to Keebler) never made such a cookie, so if it was Nabisco instead, I'll try writing them and see what they say and why they're no longer available. By the way, on a trip to Central California recently, I happened upon some Nabisco cookies I don't see here in So. Cal. called something like "Classics." I tried the one labeled "French Vanilla Classics" to see if maybe the taste was the same, but it wasn't (they don't even look like Cup Custards but it's not the look I'm after - I just want to taste those cookies again.) "French Vanilla Classics" have a nice thick chunk of filling, and it may be reminiscent of cookes of the past, but still keeping an eye out for Cup Custard cookies. Maybe one day they'll figure out there IS a market for them. Let's see... how many baby boomers grew up eating these times how much they could charge per package = alot of $$$ in my book. Wish I had the recipe - I'd make myself a batch every week.

What more is there to say? Please bring them back! I would love for my kids to experience them!

I have also been searching the isles of every store that carries cookies and I happened upon a Canadian cookie that resembles fairly closely the flavor (or to Canadians "flavour") of our beloved custard cup. The brand is Dare Ultimate Maple Leaf cookies. The cookie itself is harder made from a short bread recipe and the maple flavor cream filling is not quite right but the closest I have eaten to the custard o cup cream filling.
Deb - May 23, 2009 - Report this comment
Oh gosh - I loved these cookies soooo much - there's not been anything like them. As I recall, they were flower shaped and the filling was delicious. As a kid, I always told myself that when I grew up, I would buy a package and eat the whole thing myself, as my mother sparingly rationed them out to me and my brother. I'm so desperate, I'm going to try to recreate them myself! If I have an success, I'll post it here.

I talked to Kelloggs today---call 1(800)421-3549 and ask them to bring back Cup Custard Cookies. They said it would take a massive amount of people doing this to consider bringing them back on a trial basis. Do your part to bring back a little nostalgic sunshine. They were discontinued in 1997.

These were absolutely the BEST cookies. It's sad that they've been discontinued; probably boiled down to lack of profits. Can't they just indulge those of us who loved these cookies, and make them again regardless of sales?? If they make them, we will buy them and eat them. Crap, I'd stock up the garage!! Too bad my son never got to try them.........argh!!! Everyone on here should call that 800 421-3549 number and demand a cup custard comeback!!!

Cup Custards were just about my favorite cookies from childhood, and they went the way of one of my other favorites, Nabisco Baronets - those were discontinued for that same song and dance about no demand. I say its about no imagination. Just look at the cookie aisle in any grocery store - about all you see anymore are variations on Oreos - like nobody wants to take a chance so they call everything an Oreo...

As far as store bought cookies are concerned, I had determined years ago that CUP CUSTARD COOKIES (by Sunshine, if I remember correctly!) were my absolute favorite--with Vienna Fingers running a close second! While I've given up on ever finding them--for crying out loud!--aren't there enough of us FANS to have an appropriate company (Sunshine, Nabisco, Keebler ??) resurrect that cookie again?! (... and if not, someone MUST have the recipe!)

Please bring back those cookies!!! Anyone who grew up in the 70's or 80's would remember these cookies and there is NO cookie out there that is even close to that taste. Anyone who is around that age don't care about the calories so bring them back!!!! I say they should bring them back as a trial run once a year come out with a special cookie remembering those years, like cereal companies do. Then if it is a big seller than keep making them. What do you think????

These were the best!! My teenage daughter asked me to buy maple cookies at Trader Joes; she said they're "really good." I bit into the first one, and it immediately brought back memories of the vanilla cup custard, and that prompted me to check online to see if they still exist!

I was at the store today and bought some generic cookies that looked like Cup Custard cookies. They were ok, but not the delicious taste of Cup Custard. My sisters and I always talk about those cookies, they were so good. Sunshine biscuts had a factory right in Oakland that closed several years ago (1995), so we never saw them again. I also miss the Lemon Coolers! Bring them back Keebler.

I don't remember ever having Cup Custard cookies as a kid, but I just tried the Golden Oreo for the first time and OMG. Best. Cookie. EVER!!! I was wondering if it might compare to the Cup Custards because it has a very, well, custardy finish to it. Like a sweet, egg-rich taste. Delicious!! I don't know if it would appease the high standards of the Cup Custard lovers frequenting this page, but give them a try and see what you think!

Cup Custards were my favorite too. I can still remember the taste--- SO much better thsn any of today's cookies, including vanilla Oreos, which ARE pretty good, but not even close to the magnificence of Cup Custards. Does anyone remember Hydrox?? They were Sunshine's version of Oreos. They came out first and were better than Oreos, but I've read the name Hydrox killed them. I'm going to call Keebler and make a huge fuss to get Cup Custards back!

Wow ... You would think the execs from Kellog (owner of Keebler)would have seen this outcry by now. There are other sites with people asking the same question about these cookies. I would pay $5.00 for just one of these cookies right now as I was practically raised on them. I know the ingredients used would probably be scoffed at today, but the crumble of the cookie crust combined with the soft lasting texture of the custard crème filling blended perfectly with milk to produce an oral sensation like no other. This generation should at least be allowed to taste and compare for themselves. Maybe it can do for Kellog against the new vanilla Oreo, what the regular Oreo did against the Hydrox. It takes huge sales on a national level for the execs to approve something like this but if they could just sell the recipe, maybe a smaller outfit could product. Man I miss that cookie taste.

No one could make anything close to these. They were perfection. Jay Mack, excellent memory of these amazing delicacies.Today I imagine most of the Sunshine brand would have to sell at the gourmet shops because of their high quality. It's too bad they had to sell the company and have their excellent recipes destroyed and replaced with substandard non edible bags of I don't know what these days. Good job on the buying up of the whole shelf Ms. Kent, wish I had thought of that....

I was only one year old when Pearl Harbor was bombed and the other disaster in my life was when they quit making Cup Custard Cookies.Bring them back so I can eat some again before I die. ... Frank

I grew up on these cookoes. I miss them terribly. But I found british McVitie's CUSTARD CREAM Cookies!! Not exactly the same, but close enough. In fact I found several other cookies called Custard Cream. All british. So far I have only tried the one. I also found a ton of recipes for custard cookies. I haven't tried that yet because I don't exactly keep custard powder on hand. But I'm going to keep trying and buying other brands of cookies. I don't think it'll ever come back but I have such fond memories of that cookie. So I'll just have to keep trying to find the closest substitute.

I was just eating a golden Oreo and a memory of Cup Custard cookies popped into my mind. They were always my favorite!!! Just wondered what ever happened to them and ended up here. I’m glad so many remember them. By the way, the Oreo is no substitute for the glorious Cup Custard.
