No-ORIGINAL Doritos were just plain corn chips- I occasionally still see packages of them in stores. They came in a yellow bag. The Nacho Cheese Doritos came in a Red bag, and the BIG news was when they added Cool Ranch! Heck- Tortilla chips of ANY kind, were only JUST catching on.
Darin - September 24, 2009 - Report this comment
In the early 80s, Doritos weren't packaged in foil bags -- they were plastic, with a clear window you could see the chips through. In addition, the 'Nacho Cheese' flavor (not the 'Nacho Cheesier' flavor) was a different formula that didn't adhere evenly to all the chips. As a result, in a given bag, some chips had WAY more nacho cheese flavor than others. When Doritos switched to 'Nacho Cheesier', they changed the formula, and now the chips are more evenly coated, but they do NOT taste the same. Compared with the original, it has almost a metallic note. I would love to find a bag of the originals.... or at least find somebody else who remembers them!! :)

I remember the ones with a clear window. They also had a little mouse with Sombaro on the packaging. The Doritos were excellent back them. The chips they make now are great. But they had a better flavour back then
DP - November 12, 2009 - Report this comment
I remember that the original Cool Ranch and Nacho Cheese were much better than their recent incarnations. The chip itself was much more of a real corn chip. I also remember Wild n Mild Ranch Fritos. Ultra good.

Doritos started in 1964 so those were the originals.

I agree, they need to listen to the people and bring back the Doritos of the 1980s and 1990s. They tasted way better and could eat a lot of them at once. Now they are way too cheesy and almost gross me out a little bit.
Jason - January 18, 2010 - Report this comment
I believe the flavor the original poster is searching for was Jumpin Jack Doritos. they were monterey jack cheese flavored, and damn I miss them. They came in a black colored version of the clear plastic bag with the window that was mentioned earlier.

If they made Doritos like they did in the early 80's I would buy a bag every time I went to the grocery store - seriously. IF I buy a bag now - the small one like at a gas station - I pick through them and eat the ones that aren't covered in the cheese. God do I miss Doritos from the 80's.

I am ALMOST POSITIVE the FIRST Nacho Cheese Doritos came out in the early 1970's. I remember getting my mom to buy 3 bags and I sneaked them into my suitcase for my 2 wks at a diabetic camp that Summer. They were/ARE SO addicting, that I just never buy them anymore.. Man, youth!!
Traci - February 11, 2010 - Report this comment
I really miss the cheese Doritos from the 80 as well. I talk about them often to people who don't remember them, they were day and night to the Doritos now. I can't stand Doritos now, they just taste nasty( the cheese ones). I wish they would bring back the old ones, at least for a time.

I loved the 80's Sour Cream Doritos, in the light green and white bag w/ the clear window... Yum
Sharon - February 17, 2010 - Report this comment
OMG! The sour cream were my favorite, Back in 83' I think it was, I walked 2 miles to school and every day on the way home, I got a big bag. then .98 cents, and ate the whole bag by the time I got home. I so want those back, Also would like the doritos 3D back as well. The ranch is okay, but I want the original Sour cream back, not the mixed bag out now with Cheezy Enchilada.

back in the early 70's i use to scrounge up enough change around the house to buy ( i think they cost $69 or $89 cents or something back them )a bag of cheese doritos . The taste was amazing . I would sit on the central air unit in my backyard on hot summer days downing a whole bag . The taste of nacho cheese doritos today don't even come close to the ones back in the 70's and early 80's.

THANK YALL!! I've posted several comments (on other sites) about the Doritos of the 80's that were in the clear front plastic bag. They were just nacho cheese and they were awesome!! When they went to nacho cheesier, the formula changed for the worst. Even if only for a limited time, they should bring back the "original" Doritos that I grew up loving. Now, I can eat them, but they don't excite me.

After that comment I got an instant flashback of the bag just couldn't remember the name until putting my thinking cap on.

Remember nacho cheese "Tostito's? They were in white bags with an Aztec design, and came in single serve bags before Dorito's did. In the early 80s. They were round instead of triangular.

I had a craving for Nacho Cheese Doritos recently. I haven't bought a bag in years. Was so dissapointed me that it bothered me so much, I had to look it up here on google search and I am glad I'm not the only one. Definitely miss the taste I remembered from the 80's. My first memory of Doritos Nacho Cheese is being 7 years old and on a school bus trip. Need to bring back the older formula.

pretty much all dorito flavors were amazing in the early 90s. the chip itself was thicker and cooked in trans-fat which gave it flavor, now they are thin, light, nasty-tasting, flavorless. i've tried almost all current flavors and none of them compare to the doritos from the late 80s early 90s.

I want old Dorito's back sooooo bad. The new ones are too funky and they are like neon orange. Way too much crap on them. I'd love to have the old dorito's, nacho tostito's, and remember the corn pringles? They had a ranch flavor. Sooo good. How can we get them to make the old ones again?

I remember the Salsa Rio chips! They were amazing. Doritos also had a Salsa flavor on larger corn chips in the early to mid 90s. The bag was clear with white bars at the top and bottom. On both the clear and white bars were red stripes. These chips were AWESOME... I believe they had two flavors. But I cannot remember the name for the life of me!

My grand pa used to have a bag of them and a pepsi ready for me when I came over to visit. They taste way better then the nacho cheese now. I hated when they switched over and was very pissed. I also remembered when cool ranch came out. Was not a big fan but they grew on me. Wow let me seee if i can find a pic of the old bag of cheese

When I was a kid, late 80's early 90's, nacho cheese doritos were my favorite snack. Every time my parents went to the store, they bought me a big bag. I must've eaten over 10,000 bags in my youth and was I a fat kid! I still remember the white and red bag with the blue stripe on it. I remember how the chips were thick and cheesy and tasted like cheese. After they changed to nacho cheesier, the taste was horrible and reminded me of the type of cheese that is on cheetos. I haven't bought a bag in years. They lost one of their best customers and after how terrible the new ones taste, I'll never go back. Shame for them. Bad marketing ideas are costing them A LOT of money!

Doritoes originated in the 60's. There was a recipe called King Ranch Casserole that was made with the "ORIGINAL" Doritoes. They were plain and for years and years you could not buy them anymore, only the flavored kind and I had to find something else. I was glad when Tostitoes came out.

Im actually eating some cool ranch doritos right now. I had been craving them for awhile but after eating just a few i lose interest in them. one of my fav memories growing up in the 90s is going grocery shopping with my mom and getting a small bag of cooler ranch doritos before leaving. They tasted so much better when they were cooler ranch, they were def my fav snack. They just dont taste the same now, like someone else said they were thicker back then and made with trans fat lol which made the favor so good. Im 23 now and today Ill be lucky to get a bag where the chips arent totally plain! Ugh i hate that! they are so thin and plain and the seasoning just doesnt taste the same, they were more powdery back then. I really miss the old ones, cant believe they got did rid of them. Wish theyd bring them back. Long live the 90s :/

I would always buy a bag.. today I really don't care for them.. too dry and not as tasty..

So I am not the only one who thinks Dorritos today stink.... I remember they used to be sooo good and we used to fight over the globs of cheese chunks we would find at the bottom of the bag, sort of like prizes in cereal which they no longer have either. Things used to be better when I was a kid...... growing up in the 80's ruled!

AAAAAAHHHHH DROOL!!!! Atlast! Intelligent people with real tasebuds! I could eat an ENTIRE LARGE BAG IN ONE SITTING when I was a kid! My mom would actually have to take the bag from me to keep me from eating them all!! I actually wrote to Frito-Lay/PepsiCo to persuade them to bring them back! (To no response,& no avail) Even suggested they do a "Doritos Throwback" line like they did with Pepsi & Mountain Dew! The revenue would roll in!!! I mean; I don't even drink sodas, but I sure bought some Pepsi Throwback on a few occasions! Why does Doritos suck now? The same reason Pizza Hut now sucks and has to practically give. Their pizzas away now...cutting corners & being cheap, trying to make an extra buck. & Let's not even start on GMOs... & if you remember...Doritos has actually changed their recipe TWICE since the 80's!

I remember loving nacho cheese doritos growing up in the mid to late 90s,(born 1990), but just now, when I try some nacho cheese doritos, they don't taste the same. :( They taste too nacho-y to me now, and not enough cheese. I think this is because I probably used to like the nacho cheesier kind instead, which they sadly do not make anymore. I've never been big on any other flavors, except spicy nacho cheese. The last time that I had spicy nacho cheese I liked it, but that was some time ago....I'm afraid to try it now because if I don't like that now, I don't like any of the dorito flavors anymore, which is sad because doritos used to be my favorite snack! D: I would be interested in trying those kind of doritos mentioned that were in the 80s. Sounds yummy! Doritos should definitely try a throwback! :D

The best we're the Doritos in the 80's, there were 2 flavours, nacho and taco, taco was my absolute favourite, I would kill to have a bag of those again!,, they were a thicker chip then, they also had a tendency to stick together because they had so much seasoning on them. Doritos recently in the past 6months released a taco flavour but it wasn't even close to the taco flavour in the 80's, I was a teenager then and it was a huge addiction for me, I had never had a tortilla chip before that. In fact I always thought that was the first time I had ever seen that type of chip being sold in the store, which was why I had tried them in the first place because they were something new and different from regular chips

I used to love Doritos with sour cream...yummi! However, in recent years they have changed the formula and the chips are so much thinner and less flavorful. It's ashame because now whenever I do have chips, I have to select a different brand. I wish they would atleast make them thicker, like they used to be. The lesson here is that not all "new and improved" is good.

I believe frito-lay changed their base flavoring powder that they used to flavor most of their products with to a cheaper base mix. They mix different spices with this stuff for different flavors. Kind of like mixing different spices with flour to achieve a different end flavor. Ever notice how a lot of their stuff taste similar . Doritos now just plain suck. You just didn't want to stop eating them back in the 80s and 90s when they were delicious. The last decent thing they put out that I remember was the pepper jack tostitos a couple years ago. Too bad the trans fat haters won. Remember how good McDonalds french fries used to be. Still OK but not the same.

i bought an odd size bag- bigger then the vending machine ones and smaller then the large bag. When I tasted them it reminded me of how they tasted in the 70's so I looked on the back and it said it contains WHEAT and milk ingredients. Every bag I have bought since says just contains milk ingredients. I think they need to put the wheat ingredient back in

Doritos are certainly not what they originally were. I read elsewhere that Frito-Lay puled to truly original unflavored Doritos because people thought they were too dull. This is proof that there are many stupid people. The original "unflavored" Doritos had a truly unique flavor. Now they are nothing but the flavoring powder on the outside with a tasteless crunch to carry them.

Everyone needs to try Tom's brand Nacho Cheese flavored Tortilla chips. Seriously they taste just like the old Doritos. They are cheaper also. They spend their money on actual flavor rather than b.s. advertising. When you are finished eating them you'll have thick layers of cheese on your fingers just like the good old days.

I'm so glad I found this site. I speak often about the way Doritos used to be! They were almost a bit greasier with thicker cheese and we absolutely delicious when they came in the plastic bag! Once they started putting them in the foil bags I didn't like them anymore. The best way I can describe the way they taste now is sawdust. Bring back the original ones!

Man, I'm glad to see I'm not alone! I've always said that Doritos just aren't the same as they were when I was kid. That was the best snack food ever! Does anyone remember the Doritos Extra Crispy variety? They came in a white bag. I used to love those as well. They didn't stick around very long, though. Anyway, my favorite off-brand nacho cheese chips are Giant Eagle brand. Probably only available in the Pittsburgh area? I'm not sure how widespread Giant Eagle grocery stores are. I also love Bravos Nacho Cheese tortilla chips. I think they are made by Wise. They are really hard to find these days.

I remeber the early nacho cheese flavor Doritos. They were very good. I liked them more than the current Nacho Cheese Doritos even though they were not evenly coated but the best part was sometimes in the bottom of the empty bag you could find a dime-size clump of cheese flavoring that was just solid cheese flavoring. Those were a bonus and very deliscious. size clump of cheese that didn't adhere to the Doritos and it would be about a size of a dime and they were delicious

Does anyone remember, I think it was Dorito, a salsa and cheese chip in a white bag with a clear window from the 90's? I'm trying to figure it out and it's driving me nuts.

Kristen & Laurie, The chips you are referring to were available in the early 90s. While the actual name escapes me, what I remember is.... They were introduced with a Super Bowl promotion. Each bag came with a game piece for a time. The piece was an individual letter. I can't remember the word that the letters were supposed to spell out, but DO remember the winning letter was M (for millionaire). This was announced by a cheerleader at halftime of the game. If I had to garner a guess the year? I am thinking it was 92-93. I seem to think the game was on Fox and The Bills were playing (that won't help). I remember this because the pieces were available and a month after the game they were selling them out and I got a huge deal on a few boxes with pieces & 0 winners. But, yes....these were real chips. They were excellent.

The above posters are actually referencing Dorito Tortila Thins which came out in about 1993. They were available in Lightly Salted and Salsa and Cheese. They were gone in a blink. Chevy Chase did the ads, which are available on YouTube.

I remember the originals from the 70s and early 80s. They were called "Taco" flavor and had a little sombrero. They were awesome !

these companies don't make their own flavor they hire flavor houses to make the flavors and when a contract is up or their dissatisfied with the customer they switch to a new flavor house that's why you end up with a change in namesthe formulas for trade secret and owned by the flavor houses
Flora - October 14, 2015 - Report this comment
The differences in chips are because today A:: corn is genetically modified unless it is specifically labeled as organic. GMO corn has reduced nutrients and is not as flavorful as corn from the 90s and earlier...plus the new corn contains pesticides/herbicides in the genetic makeup, and that's just not good for you. Many flavorings are synthetic with a little hot pepper, etc mixed in.

YES! I was addicted to the originals, then they changed and my life was ruined. Started living off of the original Generic nacho cheese tortillas from a local place called Catanio's because even those were better than the "new" Doritos nacho cheesier flavor

I miss the old nacho cheese (not "nacho cheesier!") Doritos. I used to take them with me to school as a snack with my lunch. They tasted much better and I don't believe they had MSG in them back then (maybe someone can confirm this?). I can't eat the "new" Doritos now - I have an intolerance to MSG so I have to stay away from them. Really stinks. Wish I could find ones with the older formula, or at least close enough to it.

The first iteration of Nacho Cheese Doritos we're available from 1974 - 1995. They were the KING! Today's "Nacho Cheesier" version is a pretender and doesn't come close to the fantastic flavor of the previous version. I've given up hope they will ever offer the old recipe again. I don't eat Doritos anymore because they only remind me of what we are missing.

Yup, 80's taco flavored. Orange and yellow bag with the see through front and the little cross legged Mexican guy with the Sombrero. Best chips ever!!! Someone commented on the "sweaty" type seasoning and that is exactly correct. God I miss those! Cannot find a picture of the bag online for the life of me.

i really miss the doritos from the 70's and 80's. Taco flavor was really good too. They brought that taco flavor back for a limited time some yrs ago and they didn't taste the same. I bought a small bag of the nacho cheese the other day. I have not bought the doritos in yrs since they got to cheesy, I just didn't like them. So I opened the bag and now they taste even worse. They are not as crunchy as I remembered them to be, sort of tasted on the stale side to me, but the expiration date is still a month away. I'm just fed up with all these food products changing their tastes. I don't buy twinkies anymore either, the cake tastes stale and the creme is awful. Oreo cookies, chips ahoy, devil dogs, reese peanut butter cups, nestle crunch bars....they all tasted so much better in the 70's, now they are junk.

I can tell you exactly what these asswipes did to our beloved doritos. The original NCF and nacho chessier were the same formula, the nacho chessiers just had more grease to make all the powder stick to the chip. I LOVED THEM! In mid 2000's, some MORON decided to ad just a hint of the chili cheese fritos seasoning to the mix. It is the dark red specks and it ruins the entire chip. Someone at frito lay should be shot for it lol!

Yes 70's to 90's Doritos much better. Two flavours we had were Nacho and Zesty, Nacho was more darkers and spicy, and both were caked on. I loved licking them chips like an ice cream cone lol. Also, Ranch was better, had much more coating and it had lots of real ingredients, little pieces of tomato, garlic, onion etc, now more like a fine dust. The ingredient list was way more before. They had one spicy corn chip, i can't remember name, it was spicy, but tasty, it had, worchester sauce in it, the ingredients had, blue cheese, parmesan, etc, all kinds of real flavours. Then they dropped it. sigh.

I'm starting to dislike today Doritos Nacho Cheese chips. They have way too much gunk on them these days. I remember them in the late 1970s and 1980s before they "re-engineered" them in the mid 1990s. They were so good. They had just enough flavor, without overwhelming you like they have today. Close as I can find are the Taco Flavor chips. Those are hard to find sometime too.

Doritos go back to 1964 in Los Angeles, as a local product. A distributor of Mexican food products did vending for Disneyland. Among the wares was these small tortilla chips. A representative from Frito-Lay liked them, and rights to name and product took place. After the legal hurdles were cleared, Doritos became a national phenomenon by mid 1966. Found an early TV commercial with an all-teen-boy band (rehearsing in a garage) being served Doritos by the mother of one of the boys. This color ad aired on the B&W "Munsters" over CBS (5/19/66). I think Eugene's comment from 2014 may have confused Doritos with Fritos, which go back to 1934.

I found this while searching for "round Bravos tortilla chips," and yes, I remember what you're talking about. I was born in 1979, and Doritos were a huge part of my diet, in the 80s and early 90s. I had two older cousins that I looked up to, and those guys had to have a bag of Doritos in their hands, at all times. My earliest memories are of them eating out of their own big bags, while watching kung-fu flicks. Anyways, I can't describe the taste but the Doritos of today are nothing compared to the ones I had, back in the 80s. I remember when the cool ranch flavor came out, and I refused to eat any other chip, because I was so in love with those damn things. I always talk about how Doritos aren't what they used to be, but the people I say this to, have no idea what I mean. Glad to see there are people that remember the taste. Now back to searching for "round Bravos tortilla chips." They used to be round, right? I swear they used to be round but maybe I'm just remembering wrong.

I really miss the thick crunchy corn chips you could actually dredge through a bean dip, or taco dip, and have a full chip that didn't shatter and sink in the salsa. Now a days, you can't put a rippled potato chip in sour cream dip without sticking your fingers in. Same goes for corn chips in salsa, much less anything thicker.

From the prime time TV vault, a Doritos party commercial. Everything goes great, until the party host announces that he's out of Doritos, then, everyone suddenly leaves. This aired on "Lewis & Clark" over NBC (11/5/81). After quitting "Welcome Back, Kotter" (before series ended), and starring in an awful movie ("Fast Break"), Gabe Kaplan stars as a New Yorker with desire to own a country-western themed place. His character, Lewis, goes to Texas, and partners with Clark, played by Guich Kooch ("Carter Country"). Amy Linker, later of "Square Pegs," is in the show. After seven weeks of poor ratings, NBC put the show on hiatus for six months. Remaining six episodes didn't air until July, 1982, then cancellation.

Ooooh Wow, so glad to have found this website to vent about my lost Love....Doritoes from the 80s!!!! The current Doritos of today has a slightly sweet, weird almost metallic after taste. So while Doritos offer soooo many great flavors, the new tortilla taste just ruins everything. I haven't bought Doritos in many years now. I will never forget the Amazing taste of the 80s Doritos. I still crave them! I remember scraping change as a kid to get a quarter bag! Doritos should consider their throwback versions with the old look and old recipe. Their sales would skyrocket just with the purchasing behavior of all of us on this thread..Lol!!!

I don’t think they were Doritos. White bag thin red lines. They were super thin and flavored zesty salsa. Does anyone remember in the late 80s when they had either a low calorie or low fat version of Cool Ranch, where the chips were slightly thinner? I used to love them because it seemed they had more seasoning. And a pro tip was to leave them in the freezer before eating for some Cold AF Ranch. Nobody remembers the low cal/low fat version from back then, and I can't find any info online.

Ok, let's be clear, the Doritos of the late 80's/early 90's tasted way better(more seasoning caked on..) and that's why they were so addictive and Doritos made a big deal about it in the tv news, that they were going to put less flavoring on their chips, so not to contribute to the obesity epidemic.. BAD DECISION!!.. Bring back to original recipe and make Doritos number 1 again....

Submit a story or info about Doritos... the original ones!!
