Oh, I loved these. I knew I wasn't confusing them with funions. Its funny, I was driving and trying to remember their exact name. I decided it was Fantastix.

I remember these! They came in Sour Cream and Onion and a Cheese flavor I believe. They're still made by Cheetos: http://www.fritolay.com/our-snacks/cheetos-fantastix-chili-cheese-flavored.html

I too, remember these and also got the snack kinda confused with Funyuns because they seemed to have the same texture. I used to love this snack as a kid. I kinda remember the commercial too. They would take very small bites all the way down until they ate the whole thing. Aaahhhh, the memories!!

I remembered these when I was a young writer I'd used to buy 5,6,7 bags of them just so I had a reason to continue

I grew up in the country. There as a blizzard that left us stranded for a month. My dad used to hike out to the road 1 mile and half and catch a ride to the general store. He used to bring a bag of these back every couple of days along with the lunch meat and a loaf of bread and some Hostess cherry pies. It is about all they sold and about what he could carry. I buy these again in a minute.
