Description
these awesome and tasty breakfast treats came twin wrapped in a foil/paper pouch and boxed in 4 packages (containing 2 squares each) by general mills, i believe. description: 2 1/2 inches x 2 1/2 inches in size, about an 3/4 of an inch thick and came in 3 flavors...vanilla, spicey or cinnamon and chocolate. these bars were dry, layered cake-like, but hard and somewhat "crumby" and were frosted accordingly with the flavor of the square...my favorite was chocolate...then they came out with the variety box featuring all flavors. I never see them and haven't for years. it's my best guess that they were introduced in the mid to late 70's and vanished in the early to mid 80's.

I have been searching for my favorite item from the 80's--chocolage breakfast squares...Are they stil available somewhere?
kelly - May 17, 2008 - Report this comment
I too would like to see these Breakfast Squares go back into production. I can't believe in this day and age of nutriction bars that they are not available. They were the FIRST such bar, weren't they? I can even remember what they taste like. Maybe a writing campaign needs to be mounted requesting General Mills to produce them once again.

I've written G.M. and they said they have no plans to bring them back. I still crave them. I ate them almost every morning. And although Chocolate was also my favorite the other 2 flavors were very good. Gosh they were great with a big glass of milk. One of my youngest memories is waking up in the middle of the night - at about age 3 - and moving the chair in the kitchen so I could climb onto the counter and get into the cabinet. I think production stopped somewhere around 1980. I have tried all the breakfast bars on the market and they are crap. I have no idea why they wouldn't bring these back since they were so darn good.

I'd eat the entire variety box version they had in a single morning. Does anyone know if a recipe is floating on this? Need a facebook fan page for General Mills Breakfast Squares to resurrect them bad boyz! All other bars today sucks bad!

Definitely a food from the 70's not the 80's. I so, so loved chocolate Breakfast Squares. In the mid 80's my sister and I had not had them for several years. We found an empty foil package in her closet. It still smelled like Breakfast Squares inside. We fought over taking turns smelling the package. That memory is almost as delicious as the memory of actually eating Breakfast Squares... almost.

I loved them, they were awesome ! I agree with everything you all have said-i want them back
Debbie - February 03, 2011 - Report this comment
This page is so awesome. Every 2-3 years Mom and I reminisce about those delicious square treats. We searched grocery stores for months when they first vanished. I do a search every few years to see if they've come back anywhere, because I'd definitely pay a premium to have them shipped to me. Every now and then I find a chocolate that takes me back to that beautiful chocolate memory. Currently Nutrisystem has a Chocolate Chip Scone on their breakfast menu, and the chocolate chips smell and taste like our beloved missed squares. Obviously not as good, because it's not a solid chocolate square, but it takes me back every time I open the package. I too liked all of the flavors, but favored chocolate the most. I remember joking with my Mom, that they couldn't possible have any nutritional value because they tasted too good - that never stopped us.

There is a photo of a box on flickr. You can even read the ingredients (sugar, vegetable shortening, etc. *yikes!!*) 2 squares: 380 calories! Search: General Mills Breakfast Squares and relive it all again! Caution: your cravings will only get stronger!

Butter Pecan was awesome. Chocolate malt was good too. I had them every morning for breakfast in high school. Jerks stopped making them!

The subject of Breakfast Squares brings back fond memories for me too. My father and I used to carry a couple of packs with us when we would go deer hunting. I prefer these little treats to any of the "breakfast/energy bars" that are on the market today. I wish they would bring them back. I enjoyed every flavor!
tim - April 26, 2012 - Report this comment
Man I miss those Breakfast squares, Cinnamon was my favorite, Why cant we bring back all those retro foods, I think it would be a big hit in the food industry, the food industry wants emotional buyers well then bring back the foods that we are emotionally tied too.
Jenny - August 20, 2012 - Report this comment
OMG. I have been thinking of these for years. I am glad to know there are others out there who grew up on the 'breakfast' cakes. I just caught a video saying they were 40% sugar!

We should all write General Mills and flood them with letters to bring them back. Those were the best ever....

I also taught they were Carnation. Loved going into Ralph or was it still Safe Way with my Dad and buying Breakfast squares it was better than going to McDonalds next store.
ronbo - June 20, 2013 - Report this comment
Yup they were AWESOME. They crumbled but were not dry. That and peanut butter Space Food Sticks were my favorites back then.
Nicole - September 13, 2013 - Report this comment
I believe some may have these confused with the Carnation BREAKFAST Squares. We have a page for this also & I have contacted Carnation referencing the web page. Keep your eye out. They may give them a trial run. Just in case there was a mix up, because it seems they were so similar in time & description. If anyone can email GM we will keep our eyes open for them as well & post any updated or replies we receive. Who knows, maybe we can get them both back. Good luck to all.

There were 4 kids in our family, and in the 70's we all ate the Breakfast Squares for breakfast on Sunday mornings. Chocolate and Chocolate Malt were my personal favorites, but I liked them all. I wish they would make comeback too. I think about them often and miss them dearly.

I just don't understand if the public wants this wonderful product why it's not being honored. I loved them and ate them regularly. I sure hope they bring them back to the market. Bring them in Europe where I currently live!!
Amy - February 07, 2015 - Report this comment
These were the BOMB!! ALL THE FLAVORS WERE GOOD!! Of course everyone wanted chocolate, but if my brothers already ate them up, I didn't have any problem picking another flavor. I think that was part of what made them sooooo good. you liked them all, & you always got TWO to yourself. Very important when there are five other kids in the house. I even cut out the General Mills logo from the package & put it on my bulletin board. Not only were they delicious but they were COOL too!! If General Mills wanted to make a killing they would put these babies back on the market. Nowadays, I could see a ton of gamers with their squares & a tall glass of milk on pause!!
Terry - April 12, 2015 - Report this comment
@Rick: You are so correct. #BreakfastSquares is that one #food product that is so time honored from our generation, if you tried it decades ago, it's literally impossible to forget each flavor; they were that unique. #GeneralMills surely would boost their #revenue beyond their expectations. @Amy: Sure you right! They were THE BOMB! Should General Mills choose to #Market Breakfast Squares to the aging #BabyBoomers and #gamers #PS2 #demographic, it would be the biggest #renaissance of food comebacks guaranteed. #WallStreet, are you listening? Use your leverage of influence to convince General Mills to take the viable plunge and ramp production of this #classic #American #favorite !

Yes. Most definitely a 70s thing. I dont remember butter pecan, but I do remember vanilla, chocolate, chocolate malt and cinnamon. Id watch Saturday morning cartoons and eat Breakfast Squares. Ive thought about them a lot lately. Its a shame they dont make them any more...Dont know why they dont. I would love to have one and some milk. :-) OK, I would eat the whole box. Who am I kidding.

I WISH they'd bring them back for my kids!!! All the ones on the market are crap; nothing comes close!!! PLZ bring them back. I really miss them!!

There were 3 of us. We ate them for breakfast a lot and nearly every day during the summer. loved the chocolate. it was my favorite. wish they would bring them back. the ones on the market nowdays are gross. and the carnation ones were very different from these.
Cheryl - November 11, 2015 - Report this comment
Please bring back the General Mills Breakfast Squares. Not only do I have memories of eating them as a child but the dense cake-like square was very satisfying and didn't have you wanting something else for breakfast in an hour like todays - "healthier" options as they call them. I think if something satisfies your hunger until lunch time - it promotes eating less throughout the whole day. Today's "healthy-empty calorie" substitutes just don't cut it....

What is the hold up on making these? its obvious they will be a huge seller! Read it was taken off shelf due to high sugar & fat & not considered a Breakfast item? what the heck is a donut?danish?Geez- then make them a candy bar & call them CANDY SQUARES if that is the only problem. Who cares, as long as they taste exactly like we all remember! they still make pop-tarts& they are gross compared to BSq's. I can picture myself right now with a tall glass of milk. Chocolate one first-the dry, chalky, sawdusty taste makes the first gulp of milk taste so good with it! So Freaking Good!Who's mouth is watering now? Love them! I have to have them before I die. I may die eating one but will be worth it! LOL :-)

Dittos to all the comments. The closest that I have found to be similar to "Breakfast Squares" are the chocolate brownies in a M.R.E. Similar texture and flavor. You had to have a glass of milk to chase it down...yes, they were that dry by themselves...I guess that is why they have a small cult following. I do miss them.

It would be great if they came back. Especially the Chocolate!! Maybe adding a couple other flavors, such as, Strawberry, Cherry, Vanilla, Banana, other... Miss these.

I've been dreaming about these bad boys for years! Dad used to work at General Mills and on average about twice a year he would bring home damaged products the plant had kept for employee sales. If were lucky, we'd have a whole grocery sack full of Breakfast Bars. Usually, one or two broken or smashed, but we couldn't care less because they were so good with milk! Cinnamon was the best, - none were bad.

My favorites were the butter pecan. I used to eat the bottom part first and then the top with the frosting on the bottom and top was saved for last. Just curious if anyone remembers a flat almost pancake looking blueberry thing around the same time as all of this? I bet it was in the early 70's because no one else remembers it but me.

The chocolate Breakfast Squares with coffee and a splash of cream, 1970's Saturday morning cartoons. Some real good memories.
SLB - November 06, 2017 - Report this comment
I remember Breakfast Squares! They were tasty and awesome. That said, I'm pretty sure the reason GM isn't rushing to bring these back comes down to one simple fact: These things were in no way shape or form good for you. The first ingredient? SUGAR. The next ingredient? SHORTENING. 380 calories in 2 bars. 46 grams of carbs! Probably a ton of trans fat (which wouldn't have been listed in the 1970s), and of course full of chemicals. Every flavor was artificial, and the color probably was too. While some of us would scarf these down with nostalgic glee, anyone under 40 would look at the list of ingredients and questionable nutrition value and put it right back on the shelf. There are a LOT of breakfast options that have less sugar, NO shortening (!), fewer carbs, and better nutritional value than Breakfast Squares. It's very likely that some of the ingredients couldn't even be used these days, and as a result they probably wouldn't taste the same - and wouldn't that be the whole point? So, probably best to leave these back in my childhood memories, alongside Pixie Stix and Super Sugar Smacks. I probably couldn't even eat more than one these days. Two might put me in the ER!

Holy Cowabunga!!!! Ive been searching on & off for years for the breakfast Squares!!! And i like sone others were searching under carnation! I didn’t realize they were made by General Mills! I have never forgotten about these and remember Begging my Mom to buy them All of the Time!!!! General Mils needs to see all of these comments but SLB sadly is correct (sad face). If GM could follow the 1970’s recipe that would be awesome!!!! But in this day/age, would they be able to replicate them w/ same ingredients??? If GM saw the amount of people who want them back... who cares about the ingredients!!! There’s a million other things/food out there that are just as bad for you!!!! Soooo bring back the Breakfast Squares and the Nestle ChocoLite Bar !!!!

I've got fond memories of the Breakfast Squares - which were very different from the Breakfast Bars. The Breakfast Squares were definitely a mid to late 70's item - as I remember my father ate them too - and he passed away in 1982. The Breakfast Bars were VERY dense and a bit chalky, yet there was something oddly great about that - and yes you absolutely needed a glass of milk to wash them down. As "Beth" posted in 2017, no - they couldn't sell these today, not without radically changing the ingredients which would radically change the taste.

My wonderful Mom bought these for me to get me to eat breakfast and it worked. These incredibly good squares were all I ate throughout high school. I stopped eating breakfast during the Vietnam war when my Dad would sit at the dining table, rattle the newspaper and yell in frustration and worry about my older brothers who were about to be drafted. I got to the point where my stomach was in knots every day. It sounds funny, but without Breakfast Squares I would have been a toothpick.
