Description
When we first moved to Michigan in 1987, there was a candy store (well, OK, a liquor store) down the street from our house that sold these wonderful gummy rats - same size and shape as the real thing! They were packaged on a white cardboard strip wrapped in a clear plastic pouch, in colors ranging from white to orange to green. My mom was horrified when I came home toting one of these things. I think you can still buy them in some places. But they are something only a kid would ever go for.

When I was 5 or 6, my mom bought me a whole assortment of gummy rats, white, black (strong smell of licorice), red, orange, and a few others for Christmas. My teen sister made a whole “rat circus” for them out of cardboard box scraps. They were my pets and I played with them until they absolutely disintegrated months later. One of the best gifts ever.
