My first experience with a Hardee's was at college. They were open all night and I took advantage of that. I coudn't get enough of the big deluxe(or the big beef either). After college, I drove 40 mins. at 2 a.m. to satisfy my craving. Yes, I had a couple of beers that night.

I loved this burger, it had that 1000 island-like spread on it, yum!

Hardee's did not "become Carl's Jr." Hardee's was purchased by the owners of Carl's Jr. so that they could incoporate certain items from Hardee's menu, like the $6 Burger. Hardee's was well-known in the South and changing the restaurants over to Carl's Jr might cause them to lose business. Carl's Jr streamlined the way Hardee's was doing business and caused those restaurants to do much better business. :)

I had a high school history teacher who claimed to be the first Hardees employee to make a Big Deluxe. True story.

I worked at a Hardees in the early '70s and made my share of Deluxes. They were made with mayonnaise, unlike the Huskee Junior, which was two "charco-broiled" beef patties with a thick slice of gooey melted cheese in the middle, "special sauce" (thousand island dressing) and a handful of shredded lettuce, all on a seeded bun.
