Description
Back in the 80s, Lay's actually had standard barbecue potato chips. These days they only sell "KC Masterpiece" barbecue chips. The original barbecue chips weren't as sweet, and they were slightly more vinegary. I really miss those original Lay's barbecue potato chips. I won't buy those KC Masterpiece chips, because they just don't taste like the chips I used to love!

I really wish Lays would bring back the original tasting bbq chips from the 80s too. I think that the company could make more money if they brought that flavor back, even if it was only for a limited time.

OMG! these were the best bbq chips ever! I dont care for thePretty in bbq flavors they have these days. I was watching "Pretty in Pink" the other day and my mouth was watering watching Duckie eating those chips! haha

I have officially contacted Lays to bring back these chips of greatness. We will have to wait and see what they do. I did however tell them that they would sell more of these than the Chicken and Waffle flavor(gag me with a spoon)

If we could bring them back, I would buy a bag every 2 days, thats how good they were. "just cant eat one" We need to start a facebook page for the return of these awesome and best bbq chips ever! and not for limited time either they need to replace that joke of bbq chips they been trying to push for the last 20 years...

i found these in canada, of all places, branded as original bbq in momtreal about 2009. i bought many bags, of course. i was curious if it was in the states too and searched the internet to find out that the rereleased the original flavor only in canada, then they were gone, then back, then gone again, maybe due to demand (accrding to personal testimonies). then, i tried the hot and spicy bbq flavor in 2010? and those were good, and seemed similar to the original, they weren't sweet like the 5 versions of sweet bbq they have now. then they were gone again. now you can find those only in the lays stax at walmart maybe, but the stax chips are sweeter, so it's not the same, but the closest i can find. so they have reissued them in some form many times in the last decade. keep contacting them, keep hope alove, and keep your eyes open!

why is every single lays bbq flavor too sweet? which reminds me of how they changed the corn nuts bbq flavor from a delicious smokey flavor to something way to sweet now.

BBQ Lays came out in 1958. Like Jennifer said the best place to see them is in Pretty in Pink!

I just wanted to let everyone know the results of me contacting Frito Lay. They said no! I even suggested that they do a limited edition like they did with Taco Doritos(also discontinued) and Sour Cream and Onion Doritos. This would have made sense since their marketing department was trying to capitalize on nostalgia. Instead the quacks in their kitchens gave us Chicken and Waffle flavor, which of course was part of a campaign where consumers submitted ideas and a winner was chosen. This in itself should open up the eyes of every chip aficionado that since they can't create their own flavors they rely on the public to do it for them. I'm almost afraid to see what flavors they try to give us next. Perhaps Peanut Butter and Jelly, Tuna Casserole, Raspberry Vinaigrette, or Birthday Cake! Who knows! In elementary school I sat next to a kid who ate paste. My luck is that he now is the CEO of Frito Lay, and he's pushing hard to release a Paste flavor. The following statement is for Frito Lay. Business is based off of supply and demand. American consumers have a demand, and now you just need to give us the supply.

Last time I remember ever seeing these was 1993-94 in Texas in a Bowling alley, I seen them on a rack with other small bags of chips (they had already started selling that crap kfc masterpiece,I was getting worried I wasnt seeing any of bigger bags of the orange bag), so I bought all 6 bags on rack and the rest of box from their backroom, I enjoyed those chips for the next 3 months, they had also added "Hickory BBQ" to the front of bag to separate it from the crap. Im going to look through pics, cuz I know there is plenty of pics of me having my hand in a bag of these...

Monica - March 06, 2015 - Report this comment
Lay's should bring back the original bbq chips I refuse to buy the masterpiece, they are gross. The original bbq were the best! ring em back and get rid of some of the dumb flavors that nobody likes!
Brett - July 06, 2015 - Report this comment
Always my favorite! I really wish Lays would bring back the original BBQ chips in the orange bag that I ate all the time in the 80s. The KC Masterpiece BBQ chip is disgusting. I know so many people that have all said the same thing over the years, so I know there is a demand for this flavor.
Gary - July 12, 2015 - Report this comment
Those chips are in Canada.
Roger - July 14, 2015 - Report this comment
We still have them in Canada but they're not the same. The 80's Lays were sweeter and smokier and went perfect with french onion dip and ninja movies.
John - July 20, 2015 - Report this comment
Hey, I found a pic of them, its from the movie "Pretty in Pink" its in the scene when Ducky and Dice are talking on stool outside of club.

I SOOOO agree! When I was little, my dad would take me with him while he shot pool. I was sat at the bar with my bag of Lays BBQ chips and an original Coca Cola with ice. We all know what happened to Coke. I also have contacted Lays and was told that they would not sell them. I cannot stand the BBQ chips nowadays. Hanover and some other chips that are made in Ohio are the only ones that have come close (but no cigar).

My best friend and I were in love with these chips! Every slumber party we'd excitedly ask "who's bringing the hickory!?" that's what we called it b/c of the distinct hickory flavor. Then we grew up and when I would buy the "original bbq" I didn't fancy them as much. And one day it just hit me, this is NOT the "hickory" I remember. I figured it was just growing up and tastes change. So I looked into it and found out they changed it. Why!? 20 years later I still sometimes fiend for it! The facebook page idea is great! Let me know if anyone has started one. I will also check out the "uncle ray's" someone suggested. Perhaps there was some sort of legal stipulation with the recipe. Maybe it was a stolen recipe or someone bought it out.

The Uncle Rays have that Dollar Store almost burnt taste to them (just my taste). The original lays BBQ were eaten by the truckload in my house growing up. Nothing has ever been better. The hickory bbq ones they have now are the "closest" I've seen, but still not the same. I can't find them online in Canada, boo

I apologize "Honey bbq' is the closest. Thanks

I just went on line because I had a taste for these chips to see if I could even see a picture of them. There is not a picture anywhere on the internet that is a crying shame...Please lays give the 60's generation our hearts desire...you won't be sorry...its a guarantee it would be a hit for today's generation as well.

I can't believe it's this many people wanting the original bbq chips back. I have tried to find a picture of the original bag but had no luck. The newer bbq flavors are just a little too sweet. It's ok to tweek recipes sometimes but the original is always best. Lays please run the original bbq chips again. Thanks in advance.

Best BBQ chip ever. Old man was a FL mgr. I worked for FL for a few years straight out of college and right when the original BBQ chips were replaced with KC flavor (1994). I didn't notice any sales increases and didn't like the new sweeter flavor. FL has had some real bombs over the years (Delta Gold, Olestra oil "Wow" chips) and many bad decisions made by guys who have never spent any real time in the market or with customers. I think the last really big new product they rolled out and that continues is Tostitos. They always mess with flavorings and some come back under a new label but I have yet to find the original BBQ flavor on any new/repackaged products. The BBQ Wavy lays might be the closest but different texture. Highest margins are corn products so they're always pushing corn. Santitas are the best corn deal and maybe best dipping corn chip on the market, when they're not blown out.

Lay's Barbeque-flavored potato chips, which appeared in 1958, was the only flavor available in the United States other than the conventional salted chip until the introduction of Sour Cream & Onion in the late 1970s. In the United States, Lay's offers a number of flavor combinations, in addition to the classic chips. Flavored products in the traditional fried varieties include Sour Cream & Onion, Barbeque, Chipotle Ranch, Cheddar & Sour Cream, Hidden Valley Ranch, Salt & Pepper, Flamin' Hot, Limon,' and a thicker' "Deli Style" chip.' The WOW! brand was rebranded in 2004 as Lay's Light after the olestra formula was altered and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration allowed removal of warnings about various health consequences of the fat substitute. Other potato chip flavors offered by Lay's are Garden Tomato and Basil, Honey Barbeque, Take too Limon,,Simply Sea Salt Thick Cut, and Dill Pickle Brand (Only found in Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, and Minnesota). Lay's has occasionally solicited, new flavor ideas through its 'Do Us a Flavor promotions.

Hey Lay's! You should listen to your customer base and we're dying here for some original BBQ chips!! Still remember my brother Glenn riding his bike up to the Little Chicago store to buy us a couple bags of the tastiest potato chips ever.

Lay's bought Hostess chips which were the ones who had the best BBQ chips (now Lay's Old fashioned). I remember buying a bag everyday after going to the pool. The bag was foil with a paper layer in it. The new Lay's BBQ is not good like the Old Fashioned. I only buy the Old Fashioned.

Wow! It has been several years since my last post. I just thought I would get an update or some news, which much to my chagrin I haven't. I am pleased to see the additional posts and glad to have shared other peoples memories. I just wish FL would discover this post and come to the realization that they already have what we want instead of spending a fortune to seek out flavors no one is interested in. Hey FL marketing noobs! Check this out. I'm gonna present to you an awesome ad campaign that's guaranteed to get you a promotion, a bonus, and all those other great corporate incentives you go nuts for. And how much would this cost you ask? Well, it's not $49.95. Not $39.95. It's not even $19.95. it's absolutely free. It can be a back to the snacks and away from the quinoa revolution! So here it is. The campaign will be called "America's gettin' Layed". You could have T-shirts, bumper stickers, and the whole works. Imagine a T-shirt that said "I got Layed today", or one with the hands pointing to the wearer that said "this guy's gettin' Layed tonight. So there you have it. Profits that will rival Apple and Microsoft, and it doesn't cost you a thing. Well, just one thing, and that is BRINGING BACK ORIGINAL BBQ CHIPS! Make chips great again.

The first cheese-flavored potato chips I recall were Lays. Shortly thereafter, Ruffles came out with cheddar & sour cream variety, and later O'Grady's followed suit with their cheesy au gratin chips. The Lays variety disappeared a long time ago, but I see they now have a cheddar and sour cream option.
