Description
It was a "candy bar" about 12 inches long and an inch wide. It was a chewy chocolate. It stretched and the its claim to fame was that it lasted a really long time. I remember a commercial of the (red baron?) in a plane eating one in the sky. They tasted great!

They have this candy called Curley Wurley. It's the same exact as a marathon bar, just in a different package. The site also includes other candies from when you were a kid.

One program on Food Network stated that the Marathon Bar was the only candy bar not in production. If memory serves me right the Marathon Bar was made of three strands of caramel layed out in an open weave pattern and covered in chocolate. The weave pattern made it look huge! Loved it as a kid.

I found a website that has a lot of the candies we had as kids. Some from the 60's,70's,and 80's! They have the Marathon bar, except now it's called a Curley Wurley bar. It's the same exact as the Marathon bar, just a different name. Here's the link; http://www.oldtimecandy.com/curly-wurly.htm

The Marathon Bar...what a fave. Beautiful orange wrapper...Marathon John was the spokesman and he would go up against "Quick Carl" "I'm Quick Carl and I do everything fast" ..but he could not eat a Marathon bar fast..Curley Wurley's are good..they are the Cadbury counterpart marketed in England.

the marathon bar was the best candy bar of the 70's bar none. Its not an 80's candy bar. It was dispensed from 73 till october 81. It ruled i was born in 65 and ill never forget it. The clowns at mars are on mars they should bring it back but such is life. They take the good things away, and leave you with.................

I found something very similiar it's Cadbury's CURLY WHIRLY, look for it in British corner stores here or straight from the Brit's themselves.

This indeed was my favorite candy bar. Another trip down memory lane with my days going to Ben Franklin to buy it. When I go back to Waterloo Iowa I still go back to Ben Franklin as they still have a lot of the older candy, or it is still there from my younger days???!!!

Simply the best candy bar ever produced, period!! I still think of this treat today, some 30 years later. In early 1982 while skiing near Homewood Lake Tahoe my father stopped for gas at a convientant store near our cabin. While in the store I saw that they had some Marathon Bars on the bottom shelf. It was at that point I convinced my father to advance my allowance, needless to say I purchased the remaining 14 lovely treats, I savored every bite of each bar(over the next two months- lol ) knowing there would be slight chance I'd ever come across another Marathon Bar, I'm still craped out today...But it was a nice run while it lasted...

Another one of my favorite things discontinued. I used to love the commercials as a kid. The guys used to bet each other that they could eat the bar faster than the other, at the end of the commerical the narrator would state that it would last a long long time.

During the late 70's through the 80's I was training as a figure skater. I spent endless hours at the rink and had absolutely no social life. It was very important to stay thin or "healthy" as the training schedule was very intense. I remember the rink had a store in it that sold food/candy/drinks and was usually open during the "open session" when anyone could come to skate. I would sneak down to the store and buy two marathon bars. I knew that if my coach or anyone else caught me, I would be doing laps for the rest of the day. But I always took the chance and got them anyway. I so loved them!!!!! I never understood why they stopped making them and now having read everyone's comments on this site, I am really wondering why they don't bring it back. Everyone that I talk to about this amazing candy bar has some really wonderful and fond memory associated with the candy. I really think they could make a ton of money if they would start producing it again. I haven't tried the English counterpart, but I simply can't imagine it being the same. I know that chocolate in England is completely different than the chocolate we are accustomed to. We should start a facebook campaign to try to bring it back. Wonder how we would do????

rickeel im sorry but the snickers bar is not the same at all. The snickers bar is very good but no where near the marathon Jon bar,it was just the best.it does not have all the stuff snickers bar has in it,the marathon jon bar just carmel dipped in chocolate i believe snickers had a lot of other stuff in it like you pointed that out. I wish they would bring it back

It was only 8" not 12. It was out from 73-81, so it wasn't really an 80's food.

Are you interested in buying coin operated horses or spring rocking horses??? They are sold on Ebay. Most spring horses are made by Blazon, Wonder, Flexible Flyer, and Radio Flyer. Feel free to buy as many as you like. Good luck!!! :) Ebay account required.

That coupon shown on this page was in our Sunday paper a couple of weekends. We (all the kids in the neighborhood) went through everyone's trash cans on our bikes and tore the coupons out for free bars. We probably had something to do with the term 'one per customer' because I bet we ended up with hundreds of free Marathon Bars.
