Description
Remember when wine coolers were all the rage? These were supposedly Australian wine coolers with bizarre commercials. The characters had bad accents and did wacky things.

These were the best wine coolers around! This was the wine cooler of choice by my friends and I when we were young. Wish they were still around so I could see if I still would like them.
Lori - September 26, 2007 - Report this comment
YES.. these were SOOO good. I remember when I heard they were going to quit making them. I bought up a whole bunch of them at the local drive thru. But they sure didn't last long. I wish Miller would bring them back.
karan - December 12, 2007 - Report this comment
Oh my God, how I loved these Coolers. Why did they stop making them? I have looked for years for these coolers. Is there any way we could convince the Miller company to bring these Coolers back. I really wish they would. Lets start some kind of request for these coolers.

I wrote to the Miller Company, who produced the Matilda Bay Coolers in the 1980's. I would encourage all to write the company, and ask that they bring them back. The address is: The Miller Brewing Company 3939 W. Highland Blvd. Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53208 414-931-2000. They also have a website: TheMillerBrewingCompany.com Please write them, and ask them to re-make this wonderful Cooler. There really is no other Cooler on the market like it.

When I went away to college in 1987 I was slightly underage and I never sipped an ounce of alcohol. However, (grin) someone put a Matilda Bay Cooler in my hand and I was sold. I was disappointed when they stopped making this. I will contact Miller Brewery per Karan and ask them to bring it back on the market. You're right, there hasn't been a cooler like it since.

I was thinking about the good 'ole days last night and Matilda Bay wine coolers popped into my head! Imagine my surprise when I found others like me who would like to see them return to the market!! Come on, Miller...bring 'em back!!!

It's funny--for some reason, I was remembering that cooler (they were fantastic!) and could not remember the name--I remembered that me and a friend of mine used to order them in an attempted Australian accent to try to impress the barmaids (never worked just for the record). I could not remember the name and it drove me nuts so I did a google search for "australian cooler" and came upon this site. Just goes to show--you can find out anything on the net!

YES YES YES. OMG!!! That stuff looked just like water. We'd put it in our water bottles and take it to school.. I spent my whole senior year in 1989 drunk in Home-Ech. LOL.. Thanks Pegi, Judi, Love - Patrik.

Oh Matilda Bay... how I miss thee! That stuff was so good - last time I had that was, what 1989? It was so, so good. I wish they would bring it back!

I think that miller must have seen that their product ended up in too many minors hands and got them to wasted, because it didn't even taste like alcohol. I think if it was still around, myself and half of america would be alcoholics. Matilda bay was so smooth and great tasting they had to pull it. I would still drink it if it was still around, and I don't drink anymore.Miller should bring it back.

I've searched in vain on the interwebs for a "Picture" of a Matilda Bay Wine Cooler Bottle. The best I could find is some cheesy bar mirror. Anybody have a picture of the bottle, itself, and/or the 4-pack carrier? I vaguely remember it having a purple/yellow label. Great stuff by the way -- it saw its demise in Texas when all "wine coolers" had to become "malt beverages".

man, these were absolutely the best. after having these, you cant stomach the current ones anymore. i actually thought they were australian. when i was stationed in korea i asked at all the bars for them, figuring they may have stopped importing to the states but i may get some in the orient. ah, memories.

Matilda Bay coolers were the BEST ever!!! I can still remember the taste after all these years. It was the one alcohol that I could sit down after a stressful day and relax with. Miller needs to bring them back!!!!!!!!!!!!

We loved Matilda Bays growing up as well. They had 2 different kinds of Matilda Bays. We liked the purple bottle ones...not the white ones. That's all we drank my senior year @ Ocean City, MD. Class of 88!

I found a wine made in door county WI, Door Peninsula Winery. Sunset Splash. Tastes just like my favorite wine cooler from HS. I used to keep the caps. I thought that it was really from Australia too.

I called Miller and told them to google Matilda Bay! We want it back! I told them if the rubicks cube could be brought back so can Matilda Bay! I explained how this was a part of the 80's. Everyone drank it! Even dudeds! LOL!

I believe the reason I liked it over the other ones is-it didn't have that much of a carbonated feel when drinking it. It was incredibly smooth as well as delicious. It would be my drink of choice today, if it was to come back. I'll email Miller as well.

I have a four pack of Matilda Bay wine coolers under the bar down in the basement. I bought them back in February of 1990 when I found out Miller was stopping production of my favorite beverage. I promised myself I would not open one up for twenty years. Only eight more months to go go!
Brian B - June 19, 2009 - Report this comment
Me again. I emailed Miller (now MillerCoors) and received a typical response saying Matilda Bay is not their product and they would not have info on it. I responded back to their Consumer Affairs Department with a clip from 1988-89 from the vice president of marketing Ref: Case#N20464145. I think we should all start a Matilda Bay club-if we make enough noise, someone will find the recipe and make it again.

Matilda Bay Wine Coolers were the best. These days people confuse wine coolers were malted beer coolers. Here in Tennessee only liquor stores sell wine. The coolers sold in grocery stores, are malted beverages. I purchased my Matilda Bay from the liquor store.

The reason I remember Matilda Bay Wine Coolers so well is not only the taste, but when Miller Brewing was on the island of Kauai to make a commercial for the Cooler, they contacted me to rent my '57 Chevy convertible for the commercial; the only thing was they wanted to paint it bright pink. I only agreed when they also gave the money to have it repainted. They also rented a sea plane for the ad and painted it pink as well and used it on the Wailua River. My car was used at the Coco Palms with many locals in Hawaiian dress and leis in the photos. I never saw the ad and was wondering if anyone else ever saw it. I wish I could get a copy of the tape. Any response will be appreciated.
