Someone help me! I've been searching for a candy bar from my youth. It's like PB Maxx, but came out earlier - early 80s or late 70s. It had a cookie base, but had peanut butter and JAM and was covered in chocolate. The TV commercial had a space lady who came down to earth to extol the virtues of this candy. Does anyone remember this??

They tried to make them less expenive by making them 2 smaller with less peanut butter. They said "bigger value" but the total weight was less. They didn't taste the same amd saled flundered. I remember writing at the time and they siad "market research" indicated that the smaller bars were preferable to consumers. I did see the name on this flavored peanut butter Bought that and it was awful.

PB Maxx was the best. Who wants to bet the reason the candy was discontinued is that Reese's sued them for copyright infringement?

I LOVED PB Maxx! My mom used to purchase the bulk packs from what was then the Price Club (Costco now), so we always had a full supply. I used to eat it for lunch every day back in junior high school. I can still taste it to this day. If there's one item I wish was still around, it's that!

ADarling - September 30, 2008 - Report this comment
We just talked about this in a marketing class. The professor was a consultant on the project. They phased them out about 8 years ago due to the increased heat of the other PB products (Reese's owns the category), and the failure of the product to become a "cash register" brand -- i.e., obtain a prime store spot. This product was the only one on the market to use "real PB," which I assume meant not as heavily sugared and not chemically flavored.

If I remember correctly, M&M Mars made PBMax. I spent a few of my childhood years in Hackettstown, NJ where M&M Mars has a facility. I think they put something in the water to make me love their candies so much!!

I got through college eating a PB Maxx and a 16oz Dr. Pepper for brunch every morning. They were the best. I told my wife about them and she had never heard of it. How sad. She sent an email to M&M/Mars asking them to publish the recipe or send it to her so the world could once again know the sweet joy of this cult favorite. I'll let you know if we hear back...

I have been longing after these for years hoping they would one day make a come back but I fear if they did they wouldn't be the same and that would be sa-ad. Nobody has mentioned the weird little rabbit pellet-like cookie bits that were on some layer of the bar; maybe throughout.(?) I can't remember. It's weird how some things like PB Maxx are so beloved by so many people and yet, I don't know ANYONE who has heard of this candy bar. Some relics are just like that. Long live the Maxx.
Jaime - March 27, 2009 - Report this comment
Two more things: Why are we all spelling PB Max with 2 X's when it only has one? Also, it actually launched in '90 not the 80's so... But who cares I just wish I could eat one right now; one X, 2 X's, 3, 4, whatevs.
Karen - March 28, 2009 - Report this comment
According to Wikipedia, PB Max (only 1 X) was discontinued "due to the Mar's family's hatred of peanut butter." Too bad, they could probably make lots of dough off this candy!!

a friend of ours accidentally made PB Max recently. She was going to make Peanutbutter balls and she mixed Rice Crispies in the peanut butter along with confectioners sugar and then dipped them in melted chocolate and let them cool on wax paper. When I tasted these, I screamed out "P B Max!!!" This may not be exactly how they used to make 'em, but it was pretty darn close cause after one bite it took me back to the days of my favorite candy bar of all time---PBMAX

Ok, here's the scoop from Wiki-Mars, Inc is the company. They came out in 1990; was discontinued mid-1990's due to the Mars company & their hatred of peanut butter. I think I'm not going to buy Mars products anymore, whether they liked peanut butter or not shouldn't have had any bearing on keeping them in production. Ridiculous!!!! Yup, think I will stop buying Mars products-darn it anyway!!!!!!

But the original commercial says 1989. Anyways, here's an updated recipe of my homemade pb max. You can also search homemade pb max on youtube or google if you want to see how to make it… Homemade PB Max Recipe Things you'll need: Crunchy whole grain cookie recipe (see below) Creamy Peanut Butter *6 bars Dove milk chocolate (For coating) *Note: Dove milk chocolate is made by Mars (The same company that use to make PB Max). If you can't find dove milk chocolate, you can use milk chocolate chips. 1 non-stick square muffin pan Wax Paper or parchment paper 1 cookie sheet Peanut butter filling: 2 cups of peanut butter (creamy) 2 teaspoons powdered sugar Crunchy Whole Grain Cookie Recipe: 2/3 cup butter or margarine, softened 2/3 cup shortening 1 cup granulated sugar 2 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3 1/2 cups white whole wheat flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups oats 1 teaspoon baking soda Directions: Combine powdered sugar into peanut butter in bowl and stir until powdered sugar is no longer visible. Freeze or refrigerate for about 30 mins. (It's easier to work with.) In a large mixing bowl, cream butter, shortening and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Combine white wheat flour, salt, oats, and baking soda; gradually add to creamed mixture. Place each cookie dough into a non-stick square muffin pan. Mold each cookie by pressing them inside each square in the square muffin pan with your thumb. Using a fork, poke the cookie dough so that it won't puff up when you bake them. Set aside. Using a cookie sheet, roll the raw dough with your fingers or crumble the raw cookie dough until it covers most of the cookie sheet. DO NOT preheat your oven. If you do, it will cook too quickly and burn. Bake both at 375 degrees for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. Checking occasionally. Remove both from oven and let them cool. After cooled, remove each cookie out of the square muffin pan. Take the cookie pellets (if they are stuck together), break them apart and put them in a bowl when they're done cooling off. Set aside. Melt the milk chocolate in the microwave for about 2 minutes. And stirring it 30 seconds at a time. Turn cookie upside down, and with a spoon, spread the melted chocolate on the flat and sides of the cookie and place them on bottom side up on a cookie sheet covered with wax or parchment paper. Put them in freezer for about 10-15 minutes or until chocolate has set. After peanut butter mixture is firmed, spread peanut butter on top of each cookie. Take the cookie pellets and place them on top of peanut butter covered cookie until it covers most of the peanut butter. Freeze assembled cookies for about 30 minutes or until it's fully hardened (Easier for dipping). Once hardened, remove the cookies from of the freezer. Take a fork and place the cookie on top of it. Using a spoon, coat the top and sides of the cookie with the melted chocolate. Cover any cookie showing, shaking off any excess back in the bowl. Once the excess chocolate is done dripping, place them onto wax or parchment paper. Refrigerate or freeze for about 30 mins. After all the chocolate has hardened, remove them from wax or parchment paper and place them on a plate and serve. Makes about 24 (if you have enough peanut butter). You will have plenty of cookie dough and crumbs leftover to make more. You can choose to refrigerate them if you want. (My opinion, It's best served with a glass of milk.) Enjoy!

PBMax will be back!!! PBMax Fans, Iconic Candy, LLC is actively working on reviving the PBMax peanutbutter sandwich the way it was. In this regard we need your assistance. Since there are no known samples available to direct us we can only go on the historical documents. There seems to be some confusion about one of the ingredients of PBMax. We know the base was a whole grain (square) cookie. The peanut butter was high quality smooth real peanut butter. The sandwich was enrobed in a quality milk chocolate. The question however is, what was the ingredients of what was on top of the peanut butter before chocolate enrolling. Some say it was cooked oats, others say peanuts and still others say it was peices of the whole grain cookie crumbled. Any information on this or any other points or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
