Description
Royal Crown Cola (originated before the 80's, but it became big in New England around 1980-81.) It only sold in my area in discount department stores like Ames and Zayre's. Basically, they stepped up their advertising around the time of the "Cola Wars".

My all-time favorite cola. RC was the first of the colas to have 16oz bottles - though it cost 12¢ - while Pepsi & Coke cost 10¢ for a 12oz bottle. I shelled out the extra 2¢ per bottle in order to get more of the great taste of RC. It seemed to die down for awhile but now it seems it's back but not nearly as popular - perhaps because the other 2 biggies have more advertising $'s to spend. Still the same great taste! Royal Crown is the maker of Nehi flavors - which has virtually disappeared from my area. Loved that Nehi Orange & Grape but hopefully they'll return someday. "It's been almost 100 years since Claude Hatcher, a young graduate pharmacist in Columbus, Georgia, began creating soft drinks in the basement of his family's wholesale grocery business in 1905. Little did he know at the time that his humble experiments would grow into a great soft drink company..." (from company website)

Hey! If we grew up in the same area and time, how about some more regional favs? "Polar" soda! Or did that stuff start way before the 1980's?

I remember as a kid my friends and I would walk down to the neighborhood corner store and get a hot dog, a bag of Lays and an ice cold RC cola to wash it down. yum. And RC cola is still readily available where in live (in BC Canada). I make my kids drink it even though they think its a coke knock off.
