Description
A tasty non-alcoholic beverage with 0.9% in it - drink enough quickly at the age of 12 and you might get a buzz - whether is was from being bloated and high on sugar or the alcohol - it didn't matter. Might have only been in Canada.

The store beside my house use to sell these, But I haven't seen them in a long while, If you are lucky you can recreate the taste by mixing beer with lemonade and sprite (or was that ginger ale...) in about a 40-40-10 mix :)
Brendan - April 05, 2009 - Report this comment
Yes I know... 40+40+10=90... I was tired... make that 45-45-10... and make sure you use the pulp free yellow type of lemonade, not the pink stuff...
Paula - April 13, 2009 - Report this comment
I have used beer and ginger ale to get close to the taste of Sarasoda. There is a beer that has a hint of citrus that has come out recently that may taste even better in this mix combo. Would still love to find Sarasoda again.

I loved this drink as well. I only had it at our family cottage in Canada. I think we bought it at Zellars? I think it was in the late 80's. I sometimes come across the taste and wish it was still around. I drink alcohol at all and would love to find a non-alcoholic version.

Me and a friend was just talking about Sarasoda. I Googled it and found I wasn't the only one reminiscing about that drink we thought was a wine cooler. The closest thing to Sarasoda I've found today is Casal Domingo Cooler. with 0.5% Alc. Very similar to Sarasoda. I bought one and tried it. It sure brought back memories. LOL
Ron - July 23, 2011 - Report this comment
I believe that John Labatt purchased the company and shut it down as the drink was selling too well and cutting into their beer sales. (I did a web search and found that they own the Sarasoda trademark.) Recently I tried Poppers Ice Light malt beverage (4% alcohol) and found it to be very close. Enjoy!

I love that so many people relate sarasoda to childhood memories like I do. My mum would send me to buy sarasoda and cameo cigarettes (when minors could buy tobacco and people thought it was safe to send their 5 yr old to the store). I would think I was sooooo cool havin sips of my mums because it had alcohol. Little did I know what a miniscule amount. NEED SOME SARASODA IN MY LIFE AGAIN(might add vodka now tho?!?)

Wow, this is hilarious!! Like everyone else here I discovered this page while feeling nostalgic and searching for the drink I used to get buzzed on as a youth. I remember drinking it in 1986 when I was 12 years old. Someone even mentioned Applewood Variety in Mississauga - I bought it there too! Here is a fact I haven't seen mentioned here yet - yes, it was 0.9% alcohol when it came out but it was later reduced to 0.5% - they obviously figured out that underagers were getting buzzed off it :) I still remember when that happened - drinking three of them no longer did the trick. Long live Sarasoda, long live the 80s!!

I can't believe the number of people looking for Sarasoda -- I thought I was the only one. LOL! I remember drinking it when I was about 13yrs old. I used to buy it from the local COOP Feed Store just outside the little town of Williamsburg, Ontario where I grew up. I also remember purchasing it in Picton, Ontario while sailing training on the St. Lawrence River / Lake Ontario. Unfortunately, everyone began refusing to sell it to minors once they realized it contained alcohol. (However, at only 0.5%, I don't know what all the fuss was about.) Delicious stuff. Would love to find it again.

We used to buy Sarasoda from Everyday Variety in Scarborough. It was the ultimate summer drink. When we'd finish our bottles, we scoured the neighbourhood for enough discarded, empty pop bottles to return to the store so we could buy more Sarasoda. According to an article in Maclean's way back in 1986, the Labatt product caused alot of controversy since it did contain alcohol and it was sold in a beer bottle at local convenience stores. Adults didn't like the idea of such a product being sold to kids right next to pop and juice. It's unfortunate that they still don't make Sarasoda. I loved that stuff. Just consider ourselves fortunate that we were around at a time when we could enjoy this great tasting beverage! Cheers!!

Hi y'all. I'm originally from MALTON Ontario, PEARSON AIRPORT area.. Around 1986-1987 (when we were 11/12/13) Me and my BMX buddies also would buy SARASODA MALT DRINK from MAC's MILK Convience Stores at lunch with a slice of pizza from NINO DIVERSA's BAKERY or a sub from MR. SUB then go back to school lol. NEVER drunk but it tasted AMAZING. Citrus flavors of LEMON, LIME,maybe Orange/Grapefruit, Berry..like a SANGRIA. Ive been craving it for decades. In 1997 I found TORNADO, as I recal a 7% LEMONADE MALT LIQUICOR in a beer bottle that was a DEADRINGER for SARASODA. I MEAN BANG ON!! Not sure who produced it but it was bought at THE BEER STORE. It too was discontinued. There were allot of those NEAR COPIES over the decades since, most recently I found GROWER's APPLE CIDER. It's very close but not as close as TORNADO was, but still very close. It seems everyone that's posted is about the same age and from the same general areas (GTA). We should really think about reaching out to meet up, and get a petition goin to "BRING BACK THE FLAMINGO"™©® I'm up for it and so leaving my contact. Lived in a small town in B.C. near the Alberta border. Can't remember where I bought Sarasoda but liked it a lot. I hung on to a half pack of bottles(empty!) in their original cardboard case for a long time after it wasn't being made anymore. I still have the original(never used) beach towel that you could send for from the company! I was really into flamingos back in the day so this drink fit right in with my collection. Oddly enough,I am back collecting flamingo stuff again.

Funny story... I was 18 in '87. My younger friend and I were cruising downtown Lindsay, Ontario when we stopped for a snack. He got a Sarasoda and chips and told me how awesome it was. I saw the 0.9% alcohol and figured that I better not, since I was driving (I got a Perrier water). It was 20 minutes later when the police pulled me over. We were like "Oh, sh*t" and tried to figure out what I did wrong. The officer had seen the silhouette of the "beer bottle shaped" Sarasoda and told my friend to "empty the beer onto the ground". He replied "It's not beer, it's Sarasoda". The cop said "It's what? Hand the bottle over here, please". We explained that we bought it at Becker which (every Canadian knows) does not have a liquor license. The cop thought it was funny, too. By the time he let us go, we were all chuckling. :-) I did finally try Sarasoda after that, but never while driving. ;-)

Yup. I was just thinking about this long ago favourite of mine and found this site. Me and my buddies between the age of 10-12 would pick these up at crosstown variety in midtown Toronto.
