Description
Does anyone remember the chipstick style crisps? they were orange in colour with a distinctive but undiscribbable taste, and you just couldn't eat one packet, very addictive

I loved Cheesy Straws SO much - I could eat 4 packets in 1 sitting, something I would never do with todays crisps. They were my after school treat in the 80's along with a Wispa and a 'Mandy' comic!! They are the stuff of legend and would love to see them return!

Karl - January 18, 2013 - Report this comment
We used to get the from a van that used to come round the doors selling fruit and veg and other stuff. We called it the "Hooter Van" cause it used to pull into the street and hoot its horn and everyone came running! Savoury Straws were legend but they just disapeared!!!
Angela - January 29, 2013 - Report this comment
It was smiths that made them they make bacon frazzled and chipsticks also the savoury straw packet was same as chipstick one only orange can't get them any where for love nor money
Rab - March 17, 2013 - Report this comment
It wasn't Smith's that made them, it was a company called C.D.C, If I remember correctly. But aye, they were awesome crisps, especially the cheese ones...SOMEONE PLEASE BRING THEM BACK!!
jonny - August 01, 2013 - Report this comment
Tudor Crisps made them, the spicy ones in a maroon packet and the cheesy in a yellow/orange one. After Walkers took over they stopped making them, presumably because of the French Fries brand but Savoury Straws were far superior.
elaine - September 07, 2013 - Report this comment
omg I loved the cheese one's and it was CDC on the packets in Scotland

Savoury Straws are back! Well, sort of, anyway... I was recently in Boston and we picked up a bag of "Andy Capp's" crisps, the Cheddar Straws brand, and they're the same sort of taste and texture as the old 80s UK 'Savoury Straws'. If they aren't the same, then they're certainly VERY similar to the old-style Savoury Straws. Try them.

Glad I'm not the only one to remember. CDC Crisps Scotland in an orange bag and very cheesy.
Keith Gill - March 30, 2015 - Report this comment
The were actually made by Tudor Crisps a subsidiary of Smiths and I was the Marketing Manager who helped create them. They were produced by John Pike, the Operations Manager for savoury snacks and then John and I, along with 2 others went on to create Phileas Fogg about 2 years after.

Sort it out Keith Gill, bring them back.
Maria Meenan - June 04, 2015 - Report this comment

Spicy savoury straws were by far my favourite childhood crisps. When my dad moved us all down from Hartlepool to Southampton for his job and you couldn't get a "canny bag o' Tudor" down there I was gutted. First visit down to Southampton from my Nana, and she turned up with 2 suitcases, which seemed odd. One of the cases was filled with Tudor savoury straws (about 120 packets!). Happy days!

Indeed. Let's get these crisps back on supermarkets' shelves... I even wrote to Tesco, to suggest they import these Andy Capp's crisps for their "international" section, but so far nothing...
MelanieG - August 17, 2015 - Report this comment
The Tudor ones were amazing. although similar packaging the CDC ones were not the same (sorry)...hard to describe but a corn snack which was 'harder' than chipsticks ... hope the Tudor lovers get this!!!

Has anyone else tried these Andy Capp crisps, then? I'd like to get a second opinion, particularly from someone who once also enjoyed "Savoury Straws", as to whether these are indeed from the same (and/or similar) recipe...

I loved them ate the spicy didn't like the cheeses one's they stopped for a bit then the cheeses one's came back on the market but not the spicy I asked the chap in the shop why no spicy ones he said«it's 1 of 2 reasons either Europe have banned some of the ingredients or 2 theyre carcinogenic.. true....

I am so glad there are others who remember savoury straws I was beginning to think it was just me lol. I absolutely loved them both spicy and cheesy and I've looked out for something similar for years but to no avail. Don't you wish old favourites were back so you could taste one more time before you kick the bucket?

Being a Cheese Savoury Straw acolyte I bought two packets of the Andy Capp's crisps on the previous poster's recommendation. And, yes, they are similar- especially in texture, but the flavour is different. Still they're probably the closest you can get these days to the supreme crisp that is Cheese Savoury Straws. There's always hope they'll come back - I also loved cheesy Nik-Naks until they discontinued them but recently they brought out those Cheetos Crunchy Cheese flavoured that are identical.

I've now been down the rabbit hole trying to find out more info about CDC, Smith's and Keith Gill the Phileas Fogg guy, to see if there's any more info on these amazing crisps but I've yet to even find a picture of them. I need to somehow get a campaign started to bring these crisps back, there must be some way for this to happen?

I recently found an empty packet of Tudor New Savoury Straws washed up on my local beach. I know the brand was discontinued in 2003, but does anyone know what the likely age of this marine litter might be. What date did they 1st appear and labelled as New? I have a photo, but can’t upload it here.
