I used Soup Starter in the 70's and 80's. Then it disappeared...online a message states that Wylers Mrs. Grass Hearty Soup is Soup Starter renamed (Beef).

I have been looking for Soup Starter also. It came in a heavy paper cannister and I thought it was a Campbells product. Today all the stores have starters that are mush mixes. The Soup Starter had chucks of carrot celery beef and was a great mix.

I am sure Soup Starter was still around in the early 90's (since I only became somewhat of an adult during that time) - I loved Soup Starter and have been scouring store shelves for it - Sure hate that it has disappeared!

How weird that I found this site about 'Soup Starter'. I was just in my local Wal-Mart looking for the 'Stew Starter' version of this product. I'm so sorry to read it's gone but I will look for the 'Mrs. Grass Hearty Soup'. Hopefully I can use it as a good stew base.

Love soup starter from the 80's. I used it for a base for Chicken Lemon soup.. It was great I will try Wylers Mrs Grass Hearty Soup Thanks for the tip.

I developed Homemade Soup Starter in the 80's. It was sold to Beatrice when Swift & Co. was sold to them. It was one of my favorite developments. I reciently saw the Wylers product and it looks much like the original starter but the seasoning was modified and uses less vegetables.

Ok so I am not losing it!! I have searched for past month for Wylers Soup Starter to no avail! Now know it's not out there, keep seeing Bear Creek brand and tried but just not the same....Some things should be left alone, sorry to hear gone.

Use to eat soup starter as a kid. LOVE Mrs. Grass soup mixes but Publix quit carrying them and you are right, Bear Creek brand doesn't compare. Amazon has the homestyle chicken noodle as an option but it is sold out. I found another site that sells it by the case, 8 packs, for about $32. I think it was factorydirect.com or factoryfooddirect.com. I'll post again if this isn't right. Mrs. Grass is a Wyler's product, which is part of Heinz. You can go to either wylers or mrs. grass website and there is a phone number to call. There are all other types of flavors besides chicken noodle, also.

I want my Chicken Soup Starter back! My family and I loved that stuff. Why someone needs to improve things that are so enjoyable? I can't find anywhere in the Asheville, NC area Wyler's Soup. Tried once Bear Creek and well, I won't comment besides Bear Creek is no way near what Soup Starter used to be. I want my Soup Starter back. Is anyone listening?

Soup starter was great. Start with some fresh chicken and it was unbeatable. But like so many GOOD things its gone forever. One wonders why. It was like the old "Itza Pizza" frozen pizzas, the only ones that tasted good. The premium RC cola, Ppepsi throwback coke C-2.

My family also greatly misses Soup Starter. Our favorite was the chicken noodle. I always used it as a base and added from there. My children are grown up now, but daughter called today and said that her sons and she have a cold and would love to have some. I thought maybe I could find something out about it on the web. If there are these many people that love it just on this site, there must be loads of others out there that feel the same way. Surely something could be done to bring it back. I would even be willing to pay more for it than we used to.

We used the soup starter for years. It made the best soup when you added to it. I assume that it was competing to much with their can soups and they stoped making it. What a shame. We have tried some of the others and they just don't cut it. We have had some success (still not the same)using a beef stew seasoning mix and adding our own stew meat, cabbage, tomatoes, corn, potatoes, carrots, green beans and etc to make vegetable soup.

Soup Starter used to be a winter ritual for me..it was also great on ski trips, etc. when a bunch of guys would take off and have to fend for ourselves..brown meat, put in water and SS-an hour and a half later you had a hearty soup almost as good as homemade and much easier to make..dang..

I have been going out of my mind trying to find the beef barley beef stew starter. Then I finally asked the store manager about it and he told me it was discontinued. Of course I thought he just meant the store discontinued it until I looked it up online and found this page. Has anyone tried the Wylers, Mrs. Grass beef veg.? Any idea how the cooking times will change if I still add browned beef chunks? I grew up on the old stuff. It was a wintertime tradition that I have carried on with my own children and now...there is no more. :-( Please Bring It Back!!!

Soup Starter, as I recall, was made by Bordens. At least that is who made some ancient canisters I found in the cupboard. Bordens Soup Starter was bought out by Wylers which later merged with Mrs Grass. Todays product is marketed in a pouch under the Wylers / Mrs Grass name. There are less dehydrated vegetables and noodles in the current mix. I make it using approx a pound of cut up boneless skinless chicken breast. (You can cook up whatever chicken suits your taste.) I add about a half a can or about half cup of mixed vegetables to the mix. Again, adjust the vegetables to suit your taste. You can also add some extra noodles as well. Cook acording the the package directions. It is still VERY good this way. For Vegetable Beef soup, I use the wylers /Mrs Grass vegetable beef soup mix. I add about a pound of inexpensive beef (chuck for example) trimmed and cut up. I add a bit of quick cook barley and about half a can (or frozen) mixed vegetables . NOw here is the best part. Add about 6 oz of tomato sauce to the soup mix. This makes an EXCELLENT vegrtable beef soup.

I might mention to my above comment. I am single and I look for quick and easy ways to make good quality foods without a lot of time and hassle. The suggestions above are based on that premise. The key to using these products is to use them as a "base" or Starter and them "Make it your own" with your additions and preparation. Obviously it can be made even better if you cook up chicken stock or beef stock and go from there. You can certainly add fresh vegetables as well. Some cut up celery is good in the chicken soup..... however you like it. Even using my quick and simple ingredients and preparation, I get a good tasting soup that is BETTER than almost ANY restaurant soup I have ordered. I keep coast down and it comes in at a lot more soup at a lot lower price than the restaurant soups as well. It tastes better and costs less than most good quality canned soups as well. Give it a try!

I always thought my Mother just made the best soup in the world. Her secret was using beef soup starter and all fresh veggies from her garden. Last year I went to several stores in Raleigh to find the product. No Soup Starter anywhere, but instead a new guy called Bear Creek. I brought the mix home and was very disappointed, no aroma, no taste, no Soup Starter. What in the world? My mother is gone now and so is her secret family recipe.

I loved the chicken soup starter, made it several times a year. If they brought it back it would be a money maker, they could charge more(inflation included) and definately not lose. I'd probably buy the store out due to fear of it being off the shelves again. Now that my 4 kids are grown they want it also to feed to their kids. There is a good market out there, I'm surprised they don't listen to us, the public. I refuse to eat that mush they call soup that's in a can.

This is great, I loved that stuff. 30 years ago I had this nomad friend, used to travel all over the place. Three times in a row, over a long period, I made soup using Soupstarter and every single time, my buddy Cec would show up, out of the blue. It became a good joke between us, all I had to do was make Soupstarter and he'd come a running. Wish they had left that stuff on the shelf..along with Chun King dinners, the two cans you mixed with hard noodles...

I loved Borden's Soup Starter. I will try the new brands, but I have my doubts that they will be as tasty. Also, my family loved Pet, Inc.'s Compliment cooking sauce, especially the one for pork. Does anyone know of a comparable product, or how to make something similar? The companies have great products, sell out to other companies, and the "good stuff" gets dropped by the wayside. If they aren't going to make it anymore, why don't they just sell us the recipes, like maybe even in a cookbook?

Back in the 80's I used generic soup starter from HEB that had dehydrated vegetables alls you had to do is add the meat. I also added non dehydrated vegetables as well. This was the perfect meal. I would put it in the crock pot in the morning and by the time I was home it was ready. Believe me, enough people ask for it - it will come back!!! Remember all of the vintage candy we bought as kids?! It's all coming back - I was born in 71 and like all of you, LOVED Beef Barley Soup Starter. MMMMM - My Mom made it ALL the time. I'm hoping some manufacturer will listen, and bring it back!!! :: keeping fingers crossed::

The soup starter mixes were great!... I also remember a product called Roast and Boast. It had a browning bag supplied. Add the meat and vegetables. Seal, Bake and perfection! As far as I am concerned, If it works, keep it on the market.

I being from Texas City, Tx went to Kroger and HEB looking for Wylers Soup Starter mix only to be told that they haven't seen it in some time and was told to try the new Recipe Starter. Nothing what I wa looking for. Then I was looking up on internet and found this page only to find they no more make the product. It was great. Helped create a meal especially during the fall weather when wet and cold. Please bring it back.

No more Soup Starter? Please say it isn't true. Why is it when an excellent product comes on the market it soon disappears? This is NOT fair to loyal customers. The vegetable beef was superior and I used to make it at least once a month. I am getting so tired of products disappearing off the market - as the saying goes "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." All of the comments on this page should indicate to someone in your company that you made a horrible mistake by eliminating this product - it's a no-brainer. BRING IT BACK!!!

Yea, my feelings are hurt too just knowing that my worst fears are true. I fell in love with it too back in 80's early 90's. Chicken soup starter, jiffy corn bread, real butter, and a glass of iced tea on a cold winters day. Oh boy" by spring I would be faaatttt!

I just sent my guy to the grocery store to pick up a canister of Soup Starter - Split Pea Soup. I showed him a cardboard canister of bread crumbs and told him, "It will be packaged like this." He called and said that he looked in the soup aisle and the dried goods aisle and no luck. So I thought I'd find a store that carried it online & found this instead. Canned split pea soup...I don't think so! He is bringing me the ingredients and we will give it a try. How sad that they stopped selling what was a great product.

I am so sorry to hear that Soup Starter has been discontinued. Why? My family enjoyed it so much, and it was on our table once a week, with salad and garlic bread. Our favorite was the Chicken Noodle, and there is nothing on the market now, that even compares to Soup Starter. Please consider re-entering it on the market shelves. We all would be so appreciative! Please!

Yes, it is the same! To all those wondering, I confirmed some time ago with the manufacturer that the Mrs. Grass mix is the same as the old "Soup Starter" mix. It is just as fabulous (with meat and addl spices/veggies added of course!)! Fyi, to those in the Raleigh NC area, it is available as Lowes Foods. **For those in Florida, I used to buy it at Winn-Dixie, after Publix stopped carrying it.

All the older reviews are positive, but the new ones are angry because they eliminated a flavor egg and replaced it with powder. It's kind of like Lipton's Cup-a-Soup. Just remember, the corporate bastards are greedy and only care about returns to their shareholders. The customer doesn't matter to them. We are only cattle to be herded and slaughtered. I cannot understand why they decided not to make this anymore. I always made great soups in the crockpot with Soup Starter. Woe is me.

Like everyone above, I loved Soup Stater in the canister. I used both the beef and chicken for the base of soups and stews. Beef was a favorite...just added diced sautéd stew meat and a bag of frozen mixed veggies. With a hearty bread, it made a perfect easy meal for my family. I agree with the others, I've tried the "replacement" starter mixes but they are skimpy on ingredients and the seasonings are not right. Wish the original recipe were available again. The new stuff has been so altered, it might be legally considered a "new & different product.

Haven't thought about Soup Starter for years started making my own. But Soup Starter did have a good flavor. Looked for it today in Walmart. Nothing now I realized it was discontinued. Should bring it back. Wanted it for my slow cooker.

I loved the old SoupStarters ... you could follow the instructions, but I liked to add other ingredients ... enhancing the soups or making it thick like a stew. I wish they'd come back with the SoupStarters because they made it so EASY to have a wonderful meal.

Always a favorite with the beef version family camping in the 80’. Still can taste it in my mind. Wish it was still available!

I have read through every comment here, and only seen about three people mentioned the chicken and rice soup starter. That’s the only one my mom ever made and we loved it. It had a very distinctive flavor and taste didn’t it? I think I will try the Wylers from Walmart if I can find a packet. But I’m sure it won’t taste anything near as good as what I remember.

As James Brown used to say,” PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!” What do the masses have to say to bring back this mix. I’d sign a waiver to get it back!

When I was a little girl in the early 90s I remember I used to climb up on a chair and then to the counter to reach up to the cupboard just to open a can of this soup starter (the beef stew one) just to smell it because it smelled so good, the 90s soup starter cans were brown colored instead of white and red 80s label design but it had the same picture of the vegetables and a stew pot but on a brown background, and of course I loved when my mom cooked this beef stew, I thought I just imagined that there was beef stew dry seasoning with dehydrated vegetables sold in can form because all I can find is pictures of soft packets of seasoning these days, but I finally found an internet photo of it! I wish someone would upload a picture of the 1990s can when it was all brown, because I don't remember the can being white and red.

Soup Starter was the best product on the shelf in the mid 80s through the early 90s. My wife introduced me and our children to it. It was GREAT! I made a few large kettles of it myself! Why the food industry is bent on serving low quality products and destroying a loved product, I'll never know! Hope whoever controls the patent re-introduces the original product sometime in the future!

Don Alden - Soup Starter Developer - could you give us a recipe or an ingredient list? Would love to recreate this at home. You mentioned that Mrs Grass was similar but they changed the seasonings and used less veggies. This is probably why folks find it lacking. Please help us out if you are legally allowed. Thanks!

I wish you could by Soup Starter. The Beef Barley was the BEST. I tried making it many times and never quite got it. Mr. Alden could you give me the ingredients list. I promise not to share with anyone.

Mr. Alden - PLEASE help us to come close to a recipe for the wonderful Soup Starter soups! Our 40-year-old was coming for a visit and I asked him what childhood favorites I could cook for him. #1 Request - Chicken Noodle Soup Starter! (A blow to my ego, but it WAS a family favorite.)

The chicken version is legend in my family. We referred to it as vomit soup. It was truly the most awful thing my mother had ever put on the dinner table; the smell was so off-putting, and the side of it was stomach turning. Nobody could eat it. I don’t recall what we did for dinner that night but it certainly wasn’t eat this. Some memories never die, but I really wish Soup Starter chicken hadn’t lived.

Just found this site. Unless Wylers kept the old "recipe" from Beatrice ,I doubt any of us will be enjoying Soup Starter again. These posts date back 10+ years and no one has cared. I don't buy any Wyler products. I will continue to make my own. So sad since Soup/Stew Starter used to save so much time. Corporation big shots just don't care, they hire a cook, so they don't have to spend time after work in the kitchen

I remember on year we sat down for dinner and my wife had made beef soup starter. We had three kids and an exchange student sitting down. As my wife served the meal one of my kids said there was something in the soup. Turned out there were rehydrated worms in the mix, and not just one or two. Everyone refused to eat it, claimed it was gross. I ate my bowl, wasn't going to pass up extra protein. My kids to this day say I was so gross for eating that soup. I said it tasted good.

I used Campbell’s soup Starter in the 1980’s-90’s. It was so delicious to start with that and a whole chicken!! I added broth, wine, but mostly water, and veggies to cook chicken with. Discarded those veggies, when chicken was almost done. Replaced with onion, celery, carrots. Added 1/2 noodles from package. My family absolutely loved it. It was in a canister, like Ruffles, but not as big. Yes, it was Campbell’s. They must have discontinued it. I am trying the best review on Amazon, but I’ve heard they are all together in a box, mixed. I haven’t cooked any homemade Chicken Soup since I couldn’t find the original. I ordered. We’ll see. I am so upset the original is gone!!

I think I cracked the code. Tonight I fixed some chicken Raman noodles I added some left over deer chili. While mixing the ingredients I added onion powder and some garlic seasoning. I included some msg which I had never used before. The taste took me back to when I was a child spending a summer with my aunt when she made the beef soup starter for us. Unreal how food can bring back those memories. First time using msg. But I think it’s the key
